Just wanted to follow up. The Carolina Rollergirls beat the Providence team 131-102.
The hotdogs were ate. The ladies did skate. The beer was flowing. You should be going.
Next up is the bout on December 10 against the Arizonia Rollergirls. Arizona's ranked 3rd in the country, so this will be the toughest bout of the season.

Bump for the bout this Sunday at Dorton.
5:30 - doors open 6:30 - bout begins . . . 10:00 - afterparty starts at Kings 2:30 - oh hell!
This is against the Arizona Rollergirl team, who is currently ranked 3rd in the nation. This is the hardest bout this year, but I think the Carolina Rollergirl all-star team is going to take this in a close one. They've been kicking all kinds of ass lately, and everyone's healthy for the first time in awhile. My girl made the team this time and is out to put some Arizona ass on the floor!
I've got a few tickets on me I'm selling for my lady if anyone wants to buy them in person instead of online or at the door. Gimme a holler before Thursday if you want them. 12/4/2006 11:27:07 PM |

Great win.

Mink Stole is REALLY scary.

Mink Stole isn't shit, and CRG was kicking Arizona's ass until the last few minutes. Arizona played dirty as hell and were still losing by 25-35 points most of the bout. Denise Lighting was fast as shit though. CRG just skated them into the ground from the jump and led the entire bout. CRG's conditioning program is pretty kickass, and its really starting to show.
Yeah - I'm biased, but damn those chicks were a pain in the ass. Their coach is a total asshole as well. 12/10/2006 10:17:15 PM |

I didn't mean scary as in intimidating on the track, I meant just scary. The real Mink Stole is much better.
I was rolling because the coach was bitching from the first thirty seconds of the first jam until the end of the night, all while deciding it'd be a good idea to basically stand on the the outside boundary of the track. Perhaps the WFTDA needs to install rules about technical areas. 12/11/2006 1:34:40 AM |
Johnny Swank All American 1889 Posts user info edit post |
Their coach was a royal prick from the word go. He's been an asshole the entire time they've been here. Most of their skaters can't stand Mink Stole either. She's a real headcase. I wouldn't be surprised if WFTA doesn't require coach's boxes soon.
It's was nice hosting them.
It was better to watch them get their ass kicked. 12/11/2006 9:07:47 AM |

wtf was the deal with Mink Stole anyway? I thought I actually saw her at King's afterwards (sans mask), but maybe I'm wrong. Just looked like some extremely buff punk chick, if that was her. The mask gimmick was entertaining.
I will admit, that shot at the end on Sherriff was cheap and the bitching for that was warranted. It came after the buzzer.
Personally, I think Teflon Donna > Roxy, but that's just me. She got game.
One of your stats guys, who I've done improv w/, wants me to do stats for you guys. I might just do that.

Mink's whole schick is about trying to be intimidating. She wore fucking platform shoes and had her hair bunched up at teh meet and greet so she'd look taller.
I'm going to see the video of the bout tonight, but the refs said that last hit was legit. I didn't see it happend, but that bout was way too close at the end to take any chances on anything. Sherriff was cool about it last night afterward though, so I don't think it was that big of a deal.
Their coach, Pauly, is still a prick.
Roxy as a pivot + Teflon as a jammer = a damn good combination. Roxy's good at everything, but I think she's strongest as a pivot. 12/11/2006 3:41:06 PM |
PinkandBlack Suspended 10517 Posts user info edit post |
I am by no means an expert on this, but wouldn't you want to have someone stronger as a pivot, or am I getting this completely wrong here? Not saying she isn't strong, but she's definately not one of the more muscular members of the team. 12/11/2006 4:01:14 PM |
vinylbandit All American 48079 Posts user info edit post |
I'm not an expert, either, but I was under the impression that the pivot is less of a #1 blocker and more of a blocking captain.
The thing that's always impressed me about Roxy is her intelligence and awareness on the track. She's an excellent jammer, obviously, but she's directing blockers as soon as she gets through the pack when she's jamming, and I've never seen her get caught sleeping by an opposing jammer as pivot.
Tef's got tons of manueverability when jamming and I agree that Roxy's more valuable when she can put her own stamp on a jam by dictating the pack dynamics. The last jam against Providence sticks out in my mind; I think she had three take-outs. Plus, the ability of the pivot to take on the jammer role doesn't hurt.
In short, Roxy Rockett is the Rod Brind'Amour to Teflon Donna's Eric Staal.
I've been putting off volunteering for a while but I think it's time. PinkandBlack, you and I should get the scoring hookup. 12/11/2006 4:21:37 PM |

Vinyl - you've hit the nail in the head with that analysis. Time to send that into ESPN and make some $$$.
I've enjoyed learning about all this stuff. There's a hell of a lot more dynamics and strategy going on than what I first thought. 12/11/2006 5:33:14 PM |
vinylbandit All American 48079 Posts user info edit post |
That reminds me. Swank, maybe you can answer this.
What exactly defines the pack?
Last night when AZ was without a jammer, our blockers regulated their speed to stay more than 20 feet from the AZ blockers, thus allowing our jammer to pass the AZ blockers unchallenged (at least in theory, awesome selective hearing they have). Is the pack defined as the largest group of skaters within X distance of each other? That would make sense since we had four blockers together and they only had three, therefore retaining the ability to define the pack, but I wasn't sure. 12/11/2006 6:02:26 PM |
Johnny Swank All American 1889 Posts user info edit post |
I'm not exactly sure, but I think you're in the ballpark. I asked someone about that (this is the jam with Teflon - ARZ just came out hauling ass, right?)
If we had had 1 of our players in that front group, then that would have been the pack, for whatever reason. This was just a conversation in passing, so we really didn't get into it. I do remember ARZ getting a bunch of penalties on that jam for blocking/impeding progress 20' ahead of the pack though. 12/11/2006 7:15:13 PM |

Thanks for the bump, and sorry for the confusion.
Here's the skinny.
Just a head's up that the Carolina Rollergirls http://www.carolinarollergirls.com will be having a bout against the Texecutioners (Austin TX, ranked #2 in the country) on September 15.
If you haven't been to a bout, you've been missing out at life. We'll have about 2,000 folks there, lots of kids running around, my band (pending), and all sorts of other stuff.
My wife is on the Carolina Rollergirls All-Star team and will be making the Tejas ladies cry. This also sets up a potential grudge match at the National Tournament held at the end of September in Austin. Both teams are ranked in the top 6 in the nation, so this will be a hell of a bout to watch.
The bout's at World Famous Dorton Arena at the NC Fairgrounds. Beer, merch, and concessions are sold.
Tickets are $10 in advance, and $14 at the door. http://www.carolinarollergirls.com
Groups of 15 or more get a group rate of $8 / ticket if purchased in advance. Contact me directly for details.
I did mention that beer is sold, right?
The afterparty's going to be The Riviera.
Give me a holler if you have any questions.

I'll have to check. CRG played them up at their place fairly recently though. I talked to Tef not too long ago and she's doing well. I holla at Roxy's husband every now and again too.
I dig both those ladies, but honestly I think the league as a whole has become better. Everyone used to just lean on those 2 too much.
I'd love for us to sneak them in at Nationals though! 8/29/2007 7:04:02 PM |

There's nothing scripted or fake about it, and rankings are determined through tournaments and interleague games. Those girls practice 4-5 nights a week, and are probably in better shape than 80% of the folks on Tdub.

2.5 hours till the doors open. Saw the practice this morning - this bout is going to be fucking nuts. Last year the Carolina Rollergirls sent an all-star team to Austin and beat them (first time an outside team had EVER beat a Texas team). These Texas chicks are freaking huge, but the CRG girls are fast as greased goose shit.
Fun fact: With both teams being in the top 10, this wil be the biggest bout east of the Mississippi in over 40 years. Damn.
I'll be on the mic calling parts of the game.
