I was raised on the first four, got hooked on 5 & 6 in 1988 (older cousins), and I was 13 in 1991 (Nirvana, PJ, anyone?)... I could go on for days about music, but I chose ones that influenced my life (1-4), my future taste (5-6), or my generation (7-10 - Clapton's unplugged played nonstop on the damn radio when I was in Middle School).

I'm totally lost in this thread. How you all can claim to be inspired, influenced, and changed by this music is beyond me.

Maybe I was just born a cool ass mother fucker who didn't need music to grow as a person or maybe I just don't appreciate music.

I understand that the music you're exposed to can influence the music you'll prefer in the future...

But I'll be damned if a fucking Ben Folds Five album is gonna change my life. That's just pathetic.

The most influenced I've been by music was when I was like 11 and let Diana/Supremes, Marvin, Smokey, and the like shape my beliefs about love. I truly thought that I was Tammi and my Marvin would come and our love was all we'd need to get by.

(And, by the way, this whole thread loses for neglecting Bob Marley.)

Not everyone gets the same enjoyment out of music. A song that some people think is just a collection of sounds might take another on an emotional rollercoaster (to sound cheesy)

MetalRed, I experience very visceral responses to music. But the song ends; the album ends.

Chopin used to make me cry. But that's it. I wasn't inspired by that dysphoria. I wasn't changed by it. I'm the same boring mother fucker I'd be had I never shed a tear for Poland.

I just don't see the connection, that second where one moment you're blasting Bruce Springsteen and the next you've ditched your wife and kids because you've got a hungry heart that was born to run...

I guess I'm curious how all these fuckers changed their lifestyles. Some people in this thread have legitimate examples, but most of these kids are just like, "I grew up on this shit, and, when I was like, 4, I would dance to it and my drunk parents and their friends would cheer me on..." Well, good for them, but they're fooling themselves if they think they're inspired.

Okay, so maybe getting into Ben Folds at 17 didn't change my life. Driving around listening to his stuff didn't change the fact that I was/am a socially-inept, pencil-neck, loser. So, yeah, excluding those who were drawn to/able to pick up instruments, music may not exactly change your life, but it can make enduring it a lot easier than you thought.

it changed my life in a lot of ways, too many to name. but for a few simple ones, i met the girl ive been with for five years through music, every person i live with and my closest friends i met directly or indirectly through music. Music caused me to start playing guitar which is a huge part of my life, and being in my band and playing shows has been one of the most fun things ive ever done in my life and i never would have done it if i hadnt run across some of these bands.

its just hard to describe.

Uh, I didn't say that was now. Whatever and Ever Amen was amazing for me in 1997- I WAS 12. I also hated playing the piano because of all the practice it took. He gave me a great reason to love making music. Yeah, I still listen to his music because I love it- fuck off.

Thanks to music, I've made and sustained friendships, had more than a handful of unforgettable nights, gotten a job, and been inspired to do more with my life. Music has gotten me through the shitty parts of life and helped me to enjoy the best parts. Playing music, shitty though I may be, is one of the most fulfilling things I can do in life at this point in time. I don't see how music CAN'T have touched you.

one small instance, i remember being 20-21, and listening to a lot of Glassjaw's Everything You've Ever Wanted to Know About Silence, because i was goddamned angry.

i got in every fight i've ever been in during that span of time.

not that this is a good thing, but ooohhh the catharsis i had around 22-23.

I love music as much as the next guy, but I'm still suspicious of this "it changed my life!" nonsense. Most of these lists are just lists of people's favorite bands.

I look at someone like blasphemour who I believe has made lifestyle changes, and I compare him to a college sophomore with a kick ass mix tape...meh.

1. Weezer (4th grade, first ever band/album i liked and listened to all the time)
2. Presidents of the United States of America (5th grade, second every band i liked, due to a music video)
3. Rob Zombie (8th grade, took me out of my rap/hip hop phase and helped me find a genre)
4. Metallica (8th grade, first band i could ever call my "favorite", lived/breathed this band for years)
5. Korn (9th grade, first band i anticipated an album release for, bought videos and books)
6. Radiohead (12th grade, made me redefine what i liked, no longer all heavy metal)
7. Brand New (Freshman, first emo band i ever liked, made me realize that lyrics meant something)
8. Taking Back Sunday (Sophomore, their second album helped me get through a real tough time, seen them live more than any other band)
9. The Shins (Sophomore, helped me find the indie genre, and expanded my interests)
10. Bright Eyes (Sophomore, listened to a lot while in Africa)

anything less than 2 years old is too hard for me to realize that its impacted me yet

Bridget I think you're understating what music can do to a person. Look at how you can pick out what a person listens to by how they dress. Same with political and religious beliefs. Now they may listen to a certain type of music because of those beliefs but I think music molds a person into who they are and causes them to lack on to certain ideologies. Alot of my influences I relate to musically and how they have effected me as a musician regardless of how shitty I really am.

I guess its the chicken or the egg arguement.

but yes I agree some of these lists are retarded, but im not going to get on my high horse b/c mine is lame too.

first of all, fuck off bridget. music affects people in different ways, as many people have said. that list would have been different 3 years ago, and it will be different 3 years from now. are you bashing mine because it doesn't have bands like metallica and led zepplin and shit? (not that i don't appreciate those bands.. they're just not on my list.) you and i will have different reactions to a song. no, these bands probably haven't helped me decide any huge decisions in my life or anything, but a certain artist will always remind of a trip i took with my parents, and another will remind me of a friend, and another will remind of my entire sophomore year. so yeah, these bands may not be the great milemarkers of any generation like other big-name ones, but they mean something to me, and are important to me, and so have marked the changes and different years in my life.

i have a bunch of bands that remind me of different times and places in my life, but i wouldn't say they're influential.

i think the only band that has inspired my lifestyle in any way has been the blood brothers. they made me want to be a myspace emo kid. and because of built to spill i made a feeble attempt at learning to play the guitar.
