Whatever...completely different situations.

The funny thing is...people were still just as mad at Herb after a 10-6 ACC year and 2nd round tourney exit as they were after a 3-9 football season and last place ACC finish by Chuck.

You are delusional if you didn't think Herb didn't care about this university and his team. You are also delusional if you don't think he was forced out. He did not want to leave here, but with the way he was being treated, and the fact that some of the bigger donors were turning on him, he had no choice.

And Herb represented this university with a lot more class than Chuck did. I got shit from rival fans in both football and basketball...but opposing fans always respected Herb and pretty much laughed at Chuck.

Its sad....because it would have been nice of he could have succeeded here. I know everyone envisioned a second-coming of FSU being built here in Raleigh when Chuck got here and started to recruit those Florida athletes, wear those flashy clothes, make smart comments to the media, and beat FSU a couple times. But sometimes it just doesn't work out.

It would have been nice....

I know. Probably MORE upset at Herb. What else is funny is 4th is Chuck's best ACC finish ever.

Well okay, maybe I should have said more verbal.

LOTS of people wanted Herb to stay. Just about everyone wants Chuck gone. Good point.

Jbrick....

you're confusing me with someone who didn't want Herb to be our coach. I was furious when I found out that he left, so thats why I let the door hit him in the ass. I understand the differences between the two, but as an NC State fan, Chuck was the guy everyone identified with and liked....he just didnt win. Like I said, and like you say....these are two totally different situations.

It took a 3-9 season for that to happen. Chuck's been sucking at the teet of mediocrity or less for a couple years...yet he's been untouched until this year's debacle.

I'm kind of glad we had a season like this just to expose him. If not, we might have been stuck with 6-6 or 7-5 for another 5 or 6 years.

Yes there is much greater talent on the teams than from the MOC days....now hopefully a new coach can use those for better results.

I understand what you're saying....but it's not like he just left because he didn't want to be at State anymore. He really had no other choice. That's why I don't think there should be any animosity towards him with the "door hitting him on the ass" comments.

You'd be hard-pressed to find a coach in the country to stay in those circumstances. He'd been raked across the coals for the past 5 or 6 years while making the NCAA tourney and compiling the 2nd best record in the ACC. The level of animosity from the fans after our finish last year was equal to what it was after years 4 and 5 of his tenure when we had yet to make the tourney. Some of the bigger donors were also changing their tune and here come ASU with a beautiful contract and a way out of this hell-hole.

I just don't think you can say that Herb left without knowing that he was pretty much forced out.

The way I made myself feel better about Herb leaving....

He had changed his offense for the better with the players he had. I thought we were incredibly deep last year. We started pushing the tempo when it was necessary, and we were winning games. With the exception of the Iowa game, we were having a good season with a much more up tempo offense than we had seen in the past up until a week or so before the UNC game.

But then we started to slow back down. We werent taking chances, we were running the shotclock down and forcing desperation 3's instead of taking the first open shot, and we had reverted back to the early Sendek princeton offense that didnt really work. We came out flat against our arch rival, and we lost two games in a week to the worst team in the league. I think it was a direct result of him going away from the up tempo offense and not utilizing the depth we had with McCauley and Fells on the bench.

Its just the fact that we looked so promising for a majority of the season and then collapsed at the end that pissed everyone off. It was march, and everyone was mad. If Herb had stuck it out for another 3 weeks w/out any speculation about his job, it would have blown over and he would still be coaching us this year. IMO, the two losses to wake though were what blew shit out of the water...whatever....its over....the only reason I used "door hitting in the ass" comment is because I wanted Herb to stay so I was pissed that he left...as opposed to chuck....who I know needs to go but I wanted him to succeed at NC State.

I have no doubt that Herb loved this university....but not the way chuck did and he surely wouldnt let you know about it the way chuck did. but like we say....different situations.

The guy is one of the best defensive coordinators in the college ranks. It showed throughout his tenure here. Look at what he did for Bowden. Our defense was always respectable.
The problem came with head coaching and making the final decisions that make a succesful program. And we all know that this is because we were dead on offense.
Everybody can claim Rivers was our savior, but don't forget Norm Chow.
I like Chuck, but I'm glad there's going to be a change.
It's reality....as long as you win......you're in!!

Personally, I've been pretty indifferent towards Chuck. But I think he should have had one more Philip-less season.

I've always been disgusted by the fanbase the minute I realized we were a bunch of whiny bitches and thought we "deserved" more than we were in comparison to the rest of the ACC and especially the other big 4 schools. I'll probably get a lot of flack for that, but I see things a little differently not originally being from NC.

Nothing is ever good enough for this fanbase and someone is always to blame.

It's times like these that I admire what Wake's been able to do this year.

[Edited on November 27, 2006 at 2:15 AM. Reason : I'm also pretty disgusted that in one year we've lost both of our major coaches]

"Deserved"?? means winning games. We can't fault fans for wanting to win. That's the whole purpose of competition. It doesn't mean we are whiney. Go to work for the next 2 years and not do your job and see what happens.
Wins are all a fan base wants. It's as simple as that. As nice and as personable and likeable as some coaches are...the bottom line is winning.
If you think any different, you are a fucking idiot.

The only real difference, though, is that Chuck (being an alum and--as has been said already--thus very passionately devoted to State) elected to hang on until the bloody bitter end, while Herb simply felt it best to move on with what he felt was a measure of dignity (i.e. he saw that he really had done all he could do at State and felt it best to just move on and let somebody else come in and try to take the program to the next level).

Just my thoughts.

Herb left while his"stock was high"

he knew it and so did everyone else.... Herb wouldn't have made it to the tourny this year with the team with have either... esp without B-rack and ced

I don't blame Herb for leaving... he couldn't have gotten a job at the Y, after this season so he left

thanks to Herb and chuck for taking us to another level

I don't think Amato was given the leniency some other coaches where given... though he knew he pretty much just had to beat UNC and ECU on a regular basis and he would have been golden probably

I don't want to turn this into another thread....but I don't agree with this point. The year after we lost Josh Powell everyone thought we were going to go in the tank and we finished 2nd in the ACC.

I just don't agree with the notion that Herb was scared that he wouldn't do well next year. If he was scared, he would have never taken the program over in its shitty state to begin with. I do think he was tired of having to deal with everything that came along with being the coach here....but I don't think he was trying to "get out of Dodge."

Alright...done with this topic.

Ha. There was something that was good enough for this fan base. I don't think anyone that truly follows the NCSU football program expected anything more than a 4 or at most 5 win season. Our expectations were low going in and I think a lot of people would have been satisfied with a 4 or 5 win season with one of those wins coming against UNC. The UNC game always carries a lot of weight. I can't expect you to understand that not being from NC and all but the game becomes all the more important when you factor in the incredibly terrible record we have against our main rival where on paper we should have beat them hands down year after year.

I was prepared for a bad season and I still wanted Chuck around for next year but that attitude changed over the course of the season.

1) I entered in with low expectations
2) The first three games of the season didn't even meet those low expectations. At that point there was nothing to look forward to and even my 3-9 prediction was starting to look very optimistic.
3) We got a much needed change at QB and suddenly there was a reason to watch the rest of the season. The wins against BC and FSU even made me think that this would turn out to be a better season than I had previously thought.
4) We tank and tank hard. The only thing left to look forward to was stomping UNC, which was having their worst year in a long, long time. We lose to UNC. UNC. The team that a lot of fans say "I don't care if we go 1-11 as long as we beat UNC." You can't consistently lose to UNC and stay in the fan's favor at NCSU. You just can't. Oh, and even Duke (0 win Duke) put up 44 points against UNC.

Anyway back to the comment.

3-9 should never be good enough for any fan base. And yes, if a coach doesn't take responsibility for their performance then don't be surprised if people hold them accountable.

i still think he was a decent coach

going through as many staffing changes as he has every damn season

losing the golden child that is priv ( and 8 players in the pros)

i hope this decision doesn't come back to bite us

Thanks Chuck

I hope you do well elsewhere

Thanks, Chuck. You did some good things for the program and your heart is in the right place. Good luck in whatever you do next.

I do think it's disapointing that he couldn't accomplish his goals here, we all know he had his heart set on greatness for NC State football. Hopefully he'll do some searching and find out what works best for him...maybe not a head coaching job. It sucks when you realize you're not good at something you really want to be good at, but change can be liberating.

Here's to new horizons, Chuck ::cheers::

He was responsible for a good number of those "staffing changes." Chuck was a tough man to work for/under.

Unless we proceed with a bunch of 1 and 2-win seasons, there is no possible way this can come back to bite us.
