since alcohol is nothing but empty calories, you would have to adjust your diet and exercise to account for that 34lbs worth of excess garbage you put in your body if you wanted to stay at a constant body weight and body fat composition.

People think I'm crazy because I don't drink on days I lift. I haven't had a drink in 3 weeks, I've gone this long, might as well just never drink again.

more power to ya; I do the exact same thing. I drink all of about 4 times a year, and I schedule my workout breaks around those periods. if I know I have a drinking holiday coming up, all I do is cardio for a couple days before and a day or two after.

the ECU game was the first time I drank since July 4th weekend, but I went all out. a fifth of yeager, a couple glasses of wine, and a 12 pack of miller lite. between that and the cheesecake my sister made, I think I undid 2 weeks worth of dieting. my weight shot from 243 to 256, and then settled back out at 248 by tuesday.

but it was well worth it. I probably won't drink anything at all until memorial day or such.

that's a common misconception. because alcohol is a sedative, the first couple of drinks have the effect of dialating your vessels. you initially lose some heat/calories because of the relaxed vessels, but that warming effect is heat leaving the body and not your metabolism being activated.

conversely, caffeine which is a stimulant has the effect of constricting your vessels and kickstarts the metabolism, but is not a regulator of mteabolic pathways per se. that's why you see a lot of thermogenic supplements with caffeine.

35 pounds a year = 328 calories a day. Not really that hard to work off, given daily activities such as walking around.. living.. sleeping...metabolism...etc.

I'd say things like.. I don't know, a typical fast food meal at 1100 calories are more dangerous.

But seriously... alcohol is not simply empty calories. end of your argument. I can think of a lot of things, nutritionally speaking, that are much more unhealthy than beer.

thermogenic supplements don't have caffeine in them because of the blood vessel constriction; the caffeine is there to take up monoamine oxidase enzymes and make the ephedrine analogs stay biologically active for longer. in fact, most bodybuilders added aspirin to the mix to counteract the blood vessel constriction. ephedrine free supplements that just rely on tons of caffeine do absolutely nothing for increasing metabolism.

what you said about alcohol was just plain stupid. if your body is losing heat at a faster rate, it has to be created somewhere else in the body to keep the core temperature stabilized. the first drink or two will cause brown adipose tissue to increase thermogenesis, which results in a raise in metabolism. your body will burn more calories to maintain temperature, even though the alcohol is quickly adding calories at 7 Calories/gram.

328 calories that contain no vitamins, nutrients, essential fats, fiber, or protein. most people don't eat a balanced diet as it is. you're saying it's ok for people to take in over 10% of their daily caloric need in the form of alcohol as long as they walk around? I can ride my bike for an hour at a decent clip and barely burn 328 calories.

I can run for 20-25 minutes and burn 328 calories, EASY. In fact, I burn ~500 calories minimum each day running. Maybe you should pick up the fucking slack on your bike, fatty.

^I tend to burn 800 calories or more every time I do cardio, between elliptical training and stairmasters. I ride my bike for fun and to get outside when the weather's nice. my point still stands that 328 calories a day is not a small increment, and I seriously doubt the majority of people in this thread run as much as you do.

You must seriously underestimate how easy it is to burn 328 calories, especially if you are out of shape and trying cardio. Fat people have it easier, anyway. Get off your fucking high horse and admit 328 calories is small fucking change for fatasses.

yeah, its been a long time since biochemistry class, but i know alcohol consumption at recreational quantities will fuck your metabolism up the day you drink it, and untill your liver completely rids the body of it (well after the hangover period).

if you had quoted my entire statement then you would have quoted me saying one drink won't hurt you too badly, but having several is going to add way more calories than you're going to burn off. the general dieting advice is just to tell people it's wrong, because if you get into all the details you'll usually confuse people on what happens in the body at different alcohol levels.

I haven't read through the thread but here's what I do:

In the past year I've lost 70 pounds. I've done it with a combination of spin classes, running, athletic conditioning classes and lifting weights. But the most important thing is NUTRITION! You have to eat better if you expect to lose anything. My usual schedule is pretty simple:

Monday: 50 minute spin class. HR is usually somewhere between 150-170 for the majority of the class. My resting HR is somewhere in the low 50s.

Tuesday: 3 mile run at a fast pace. I'm still not very fast but usually do the run in about 22-23 minutes, so about a 7:30/mile pace. Not bad since I run outside and Charlotte is rather hilly.

Wednesday: Athletic conditioning for an hour. This class combines all the things you hated about sports. Running the stairs, running laps, suicide drills, sprints, high knees, jump rope, obstacle courses, shuffles, jumps, etc. It's a great class though, keeps you moving for the entire hour. After that I lift weights for the one time a week. I usually do two lifts per muscle group.

Thursday: Longer run, usually 8-9 miles. Slower pace, around 9-9:30/mile pace.

Friday: Off

Saturday: Another long run, I'm doing a half marathon next weekend so my distance has been going up. Attempting the 13 this weekend.

Sunday: Off or a 3 mile jog, accent on jog. Just something to get the blood flowing.

Not sure if it's been mentioned yet, but...

I see the main point being that alcohol is empty calories and drinking a lot is going to add way more calories etc etc

Anyways, another important factor is the effect it has on Protein Synthesis...it basically shuts that down (more or less) and if your primary goal is to gain/maintain muscle growth this is def. something you do not want to happen on a regular basis.

Unless you have below-average genetics...this is not a necessity.

Watch what you eat...work out...do some cardio...you can get cut. It does not have to be that strict.

yeah, I hate hearing people use those terms as well.

I don't think it's been mentioned in here yet, but you are better off eating several small meals instead of the classic "3 square meals". just cut starches out of your diet and replace them with low glycemic grains and fibers, and base your diet around foods that are high in protein and healthy fats. even when dieting I still eat 5 meals a day; when I'm bulking I up it to 7.

care to explain this?

total calories at the end of the day are what count...obviously it'll help you not stuff your face if you spread those calories out, but saying that it's better than 3 square meals is misleading

It's my understanding that it helps keeps your metabolism raised and stable.

Eleusis, wouldn't backing off the meals for dieting down be less productive compared to keeping the higher number and just backing the calories down in the meals? Did you ever find whole oats?

I've pretty much cut out snacks. In high school and college I use to always buy little debbies and shit like that to snack on all the time...but the older you get, the less your body can take that and still stay in shape. I've substituted some healthy granola bars for those snacks (lots of granola bars are just as bad as candy bars) and I've pretty much cut out soft drinks. As far as my meals go, I eat healthy when I can, but I still eat burgers and fries regularly...and the occasional desert or candy bar when I'm craving. I also drink pretty regularly...I laugh at people who stop say that you can't drink a lot and stay in shape.

As far as working out goes...I make it to the gym on average of 4 days a week. Sometimes five, sometimes three...but mostly four. I split it up like this: one day chest, one day biceps and back, one day triceps and shoulders, one day lower body. And everyday I lift I either do thirty minutes of cardio or thirty minutes of abs. So I do cardio and abs twice a week (sometimes cardio three times a week).

Other then when I was in high school and playing like 3 sports at a time, I'm in the best shape of my life. I can bench almost twice my body weight, repping three hundred on squats, can do 15-20 REAL pull-ups, running close to four and a half miles in thirty minutes, and have held a consistent 8-pack for the past year. I haven't really switched up my workout in about 2 years other than I've just added more to it. I use to do three exercises for every muscle, now I do four, I've added more cardio and more abs, and that's about it. I don't like switching up my workout because I feel like what I do works pretty good, so why change it?

I feel like staying in good shape is common sense...I don't understand why people have such a hard time with it. Motivation is probably the toughest thing....if you can get that, the rest should be easy.

the body is not cabable of storing protein, unless you want to consider your muscles as a storage system that you're willing to catabolize. eating proteing at several times spread out through the day helps keep amino acid levels in the body stable, which aids in repairing tissue and maintaining a positive nitrogen balance. when you severely restrict calories, it helps keep your body from resorting to gluconeogenesis on existing muscle tissue for energy.

food also has a thermogenic effect on the body. the body actually has to expend a small amount of energy in order to digest the food you eat. the thermogenic effect is not linear with the amount of calories you eat, but moreso with the amount of time your body is digesting the foods. eating more frequently raises the caloric expenditure of your body.

there are supposedly other benefits from eating more often that stem from ghrelin and leptin levels in the body, but I don't have enough of an understanding of endocrinology to understand them. the basis of some of the studies I have seen is that frequent meals and corresponding frequent spikes in leptin somehow trick the brain into thinking you are overeating and thus increases thyroid hormones and stimulates fat release through the inflammatory response systems. I've seen so much contradicting information on leptin in the last few years that I just stopped reading it. honestly, I don't think the scientific community agrees on how the hormones produced by the stomach work.

as far as why I cut back on meals, it's just personal preference. I think I am fairly insulin sensitive (since I bulk so easily), and it seems easier for me to lose weight by cutting back on my meals and spacing them out by 3 hours instead of 2. also, I tend to diet wit the aid of yohimbine, ephedrine, and caffeine stacks taken about 3 hours before doing cardio. for some reason, yohimbine seems to only work when you have nothing in your stomach. I usually adjust my meals so that I stop eating an hour before taking the yohimbine and not eating again until about an hour after my cardio session.

I've lost 60 lbs from becoming a vegan and lifting/cardio 4-5 times a week. I still drink alcohol once or twice a week.
