six months ago i started a two-year position with McKinsey & Company, which is considered the best general consulting firm in the world... not a job that anyone would quit lightly. that said, if there's a perpetual shortage of math professors in the middle east, it's something i would definitely consider once i finish up in 2008.
oh, and yes, i'm a caucasian american. thanks for the insight on your friend; on a similar line of thinking, is a lack of arabic language skills a big hindrance there? both in the university and outside. i'd like to start learning either japanese or arabic over the next few years, so if it's a big obstacle, that might help me decide between the two.

How long is this offer good for? Im finishing up my math degree this semester and am looking to do overseas humanitarian work. If I could possibly work part time for your school and part time with some NGO's, I'd love to do it. 1/8/2007 11:22:09 PM |

^^ hey, you got a great job, so of course, don't quit that!
once you finish, come down to here, but if coming to SA, come to a real city (only 3: Jeddah, Riyadh, Dhahran). or better yet, go to Bahrain, Qatar, UAE, Kuwait, or Oman.
no, lack of arabic is not really a hindrance. there are several americans and brits who just arrived in september, and they are doing fine. all you have to do is learn the numbers, and common words and phrases. most of the locals, at least the ones who will be serving you in restaurants and shops, will speak english (anyway, service people are nearly all foreigners).
so, it is not a big obstacle. if you are enthusiastic and good at languages, you can pick up enough in a year while here to form your own simple sentences. but of course, it doesn't hurt to learn it while in the US to get a head start.
if you want to learn a language to further yourself in your career (international consulting?), then i would go with arabic over japanese. up to you.
^ forever, literally. we have a permanent shortage. we don't have any NGOs here at all in this country. but, if you still want to come to SA, look at page 1 for links to universities in the major cities. also, check out unis in bahrain, qatar, uae, kuwait, and oman. or if you prefer, outside the gulf: jordan, lebanon, syria, etc.
good luck to both of you.

wow, this def. would be something I'd be heavily interested in in about 3 years time (yeah I know, thinking ahead, things to keep me here until then). Too bad I majored in business, not math.
Still though, aside from the concerns over safety that most Americans have with the region (rightfully so as a whole, though there are differences depending on where you go) it sounds like a stellar opportunity for qualified persons. 1/9/2007 9:16:47 AM |

as a caucasian american, it'd take a lot more than $38k to get me to live in the middle east. no offense to anyone who is and does.
not that i'm qualified anyway. 3/4/2007 2:13:29 AM |

to each his own...
but the amount of money you would save is equal to the amount you would save on double that salary back in the US (of course it depends on where you live in the US too). 3/4/2007 2:22:00 AM |

^ yeah because there are no peaceful uses of nuclear nukular energy, because bush said so.
and because the US is the only country to use nukular energy solely for peaceful purposes... OH SNAP
saudi arabia doesn't even have a nukular program for fuck's sake.
and i thought you were one of the smart ones.
^^ sorry nuclear engineering doesn't exist here. 4/7/2007 10:20:51 AM |

Quote : | "No, only if your employer is based in the US are you taxed at US rates. IE: Military, multi national company etc." |
Wrong. Since you are going to Saudi Arabia and only plan to stay temporarily you are still considered a resident of the United States on a temporary absence. As a result you would have to pay income taxes on the money you make while you were in Saudi Arabia. If you had to pay Saudi Arabian income taxes while you were there you would then get a credit for taxes paid to another country on your US Return. The best example I can give of this is when you work in one state and live in another.

If its gifts then yes, but it is really $11,000 now. But if its your money that you earned elsewhere you can bring in as much as you want without penalty, provided you have correctly stated all income on tax returns. If I am moving here from another country I could bring 10 million dollars and I wouldnt have to pay any tax on that.4/7/2007 12:26:32 PM |
