my take: 1) it's good that NASA has some sort of direction again 2) they are not given enough money to do anything that's actually ambitious 3) we could have easily done this mission in the 70s 4) going to mars would actually be a challenge 5) we are much closer now technologically to being able to have a manned landing on mars than we were to being able to land a man on the moon in 1961. 6) i hope the chinese develop their space program quickly so that we have some competition again. 12/8/2006 2:21:30 AM |

The lagrange point comment.
It just let me realize that I've accumulated such random knowledge that there's no denying that I'm a nerd.12/8/2006 3:05:47 AM |

the soviet race was more fear motivated than sport. nasa will not get funding to be ambitious without a public that have a reason to fear failure. 12/8/2006 11:18:59 AM |

you think an ambitious chinese space program wouldn't scare the shit out of us?

If they had done this 35 years ago, it would have solved a lot of things. 12/8/2006 6:55:37 PM |

Scares the hell out of me...Their having nukes and an advanced space program, not to mention 1/6 of the world population, could cause problems, I would think.12/15/2006 1:10:42 PM |

i sort of wish we would skip the lunar base and concentrate on mars. with as much data and information we are getting recently about mars, and with all of the recent discoveries pointing to the fact that water existed(or exists) on mars, it seems we would get a lot more out of a mars project right now. 12/15/2006 1:48:27 PM |

i'd rather them land on the moon in my lifetime and on mars 50 years after i die than land on mars 5 years after i die... this is not about human progress but personal entertainment. 12/15/2006 1:53:26 PM |

Six months.

Agreed. I can't wait to see the full release of their new direction. I don't think that the moon is a substitute for Bush's mission for us to go to Mars.
Quote : | "sarijoul: 2) they are not given enough money to do anything that's actually ambitious" |
Agreed. They're not even given enough money to patrol the sky for...oh I don't know...EARTH KILLING ASTEROIDS properly. Nondefensive mission directives might not be receiving good funds either.
Quote : | "sarijoul: 3) we could have easily done this mission in the 70s" |
Shhh. Don't tell the kiddies. You'll kill the thrill for them.
Quote : | "sarijoul: 4) going to mars would actually be a challenge" |
And I think we're still planning to do that.

Really? Could you supply some info on this?
Quote : | "sarijoul: 6) i hope the chinese develop their space program quickly so that we have some competition again." |
I think it'd be good for us and for the economy. In fact, I believe competition in space might be the revolutionary child that carries our economy (and solving the problem I mentioned in) the Information Age () thread.
Good post.

Explain.
I'm not saying I disagree. I'm just curious about your rationale.

No shit! I heard that they'd concluded there might've been liquid water on Mars as recently as two years ago. Seems like I recall that being a recently released story.12/15/2006 4:15:27 PM |
