No, they don't come close to Toyota/Honda level. Pre-2k Jeeps = shit. Post-2k Jeeps = a little better quality. Overall, Dodge/Chrysler is known for their short-lived vehicles.

my '89 cherokee is running fine with 212k miles. body is in good condition. as far as i know transmission hasn't been replaced.
bought used in '01 and have only had to replace the window, ignition key, and starter after someone tried to hotwire it not realizing the battery was disconnected- and caused a bunch of damage.

^how the fuck can you say that about Mercedes? Those cars aren't short lived by any meaning of the phrase. Those engines last forever.

I have a 96 Grand Cherokee with 165 on it. It's not working as well as it used to, it has stared burning oil like crazy, the door hinges had to be replaced, the entire audio system has died, and the transmission probably needs to be fixed.

But it got to 150 without too many problems.

I had an '04 Grand Cherokee Overland with about 30K miles on it before it died on 10/3.

It died when a minivan full of Mexicans with no insurance ran through a red light and broadsided it at 50 mph, with my family and me in it.

Hey, guys. My point wasn't to offend either you or Chrysler etc. My family has owned 5 Dodge/Chryslers. There are a lot of long-lasting ones out there, but I really don't think that they have had a very good reputation when it comes to quality over the past couple of decades. I think they're fine now and they're doing a way better job than the other guys in Michigan.

I come from a C&D POV so maybe you guys have different perspectives.

My brother's jeep cherokee (1993 2dr Country 4.0L auto) had a tree fall on it (fixed that using hydraulic jacks and some ghetto engineering), drove through a flood that was a couple inches below the intake in depth, was driven psychotically for about 5 years, and he's really only had to do regular maintenance on the thing with the exception of the tree thing. Right now he's driving a honda civic because the gas costs were too high from out where he lived.

My jeep cherokee that I have now is a solid beast (2000 4dr sport 4.0L auto), with the exception being that the AC system was made using lemons ($1300 repair to replace the condenser), and the cooling fan on it went out shortly after we bought it. I've put about 8k miles on it since we got it 2 years ago, and drive it easy. It's never had any engine or transmission problems, it always starts unless you kill the battery (did this once with my interior light, once because the stealership broke the hood lamp housing so the damn thing just dangled around draining juice (thanks to the mercury switch)).

The one I had before this one ran like a POS because my dad wouldn't take it to anybody besides the dealership or his one mechanic (terry's tire, they've moved somewhere). He also insisted upon taking it to jiffy rape (this probably cost him hundreds of dollars because of the sucker moves he fell for). It had a problem with the vaccuum lines that never were fixed until the very end of when I had the car, then the car had some major electrical problems that caused a small fire. To be fair however, the car was wrecked majorly at least once before we got it (new front right fender, new front grille, bumper caps were torn to hell and poorly repaired, one door was out of alignment, gap spacing on the car could vary by several millimeters between different body parts (looked like shit if you knew what you were looking for, which I did two years after we got the car), and none of this was on the damn carfax), and it caught on fire after it was "repaired" (by Maaco...) because it was most likely driven straight into a concrete pole.

ANYWAY, if you treat a jeep nice, do all the regular maintenance, and don't drive it like a dumbass all the time, it's bound to last just fine. I've heard that jeep liberties have pretty good quality (from those tv/online reviews, none of them reputable I bet).

There's no doubt that Jeeps are tough. But I sometimes question the overall fit/finish and the level of refinement in manufacturing quality. Big improvement since the last generation. But Jeeps can go through a lot.
