Blind Hate,

I'm in the middle of a PhD in Parks and Rec for what it's worth. The man's right, and I'll give you some links when I get back to my computer. Dozens of studies that public funded stadiums at best break even, with the vast majority losing buckets of money. It's all about opportunity costs my friend.

Blind Hate.

First off, go to http://www.fieldofschemes.com/ and get some background on public sports financing. Buy the book if you want - my sports finance professor raves about it. There's no reason to stick your head in the sand just because you (or I) dig sports.

Then, read some links.

"Economists have generally concluded that a new
stadium does not have a beneficial impact on most of these target variables, and often has a
deleterious effect."

Quote :
"According to Baim, sports stadiums most often lose money; that is, they do not generate enough revenue to cover both operating costs and debt servicing. He reaches this conclusion by investigating the actual operations of baseball stadiums and their economic impact on local economies.

The bulk of Baim's study involves a detailed examination of 15 stadiums. His aim is to determine if the stadiums have a positive or negative accumulated net present value (ANPV)--a variation of net present value due to the fact that the stadiums are still operational. As basic finance tells us, if there is a positive ANPV then it was a good investment; a negative ANPV suggests that the funds invested in the stadium could have been better used. Only one stadium Baim investigated had a positive ANPV, Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, which, incidentally, was privately financed. All other stadiums had a negative APNV which means that the municipality had to subsidize the sports stadium.

This insightful book is filled with many other interesting results. For example, the average cost overrun for the stadiums Baim examined was 73 percent, which almost rivals the cost overruns of weapons producers."

Then, stop fucking whining about needing your god damn links.

where does the $1b number come from? They'd been throwing around $650 million for the last year and the taxpayers are going to be putting in $325 million...

eh, it'll still be an awesome stadium... hopefully Jones'll be able to afford the extra $350 million cuz he's not getting that out of the people in the area
