I worked at the Wake County Animal Shelter (which is where animal control brings the animals) and pit bulls DO NOT get adopted out. They will keep them for 2 weeks to see if the original owner will claim it, except in a case like this with neglect, then put them to sleep. They said its too much liability to adopt out pit bulls and we never were allowed to. In fact, one of my co-workers wanted a pit bull puppy that came in and it took all he had to finally convince the manager to let him take it home, claiming it never came in. Good luck though. I hate to see animal cruelty. Fuck those people

SPCA does not equal Wake County Animal Shelter

and i think if you are inside the beltline they go to SPCA and if you are outside they go to the animal shelter...so it depends on where you live

Animal Control still hasn't come out, I called at 1:30 and just got home from work. I was definately nervous about that happening SweetTreats. I'm not sure I made the right decision calling animal control but I did mention that I had been calling rescues with available foster homes, and that I wanted to be contacted when they saw the dogs. NCSULilwolf were you serious about helping one of them until a permanent foster home is found? I know I wouldn't be able to take both in. Let me know!

do you mean just adult dogs? i got penelope about a month ago from the wake county animal shelter and her mom was pitbull (if not full blooded, then EXTREMELY close) and she was up for adoption. And I had no problem at all adopting penny.....and I found out from the vet that they are almost certain shes pitbull/great dane......gonna be a big one

[Edited on December 19, 2006 at 11:21 AM. Reason : How can you say no to this face? ]

and just for the hell of it.....yorkshire terriers are more aggressive than pitbulls
its just that since pitbulls are the most muscular of the terrier group-they can cause more damage, hence the concern

they are not however the most aggressive dog breed

I can't physically take them in to foster them (because my boxer mix really would have an issue with intact males) but I'll do whatever I can to help you!

Plz keep us posted! I hope that this gets resolved soon. I would offer to help but our yard isn't fenced in! I always have a 1yr. old lil girl that I would be concerned about around a pit. I def don't think they are all evil though but they do get a bad rap. I hope that it all works out in the end and I hope if the owners did abandon them that they get what is coming to them.

On a random pet related issue...anyone know what the laws in Raleigh/Garner city limits are on chickens and roosters? Like are they allowed to just roam free? We live in a neighborhood that has no farm land anywhere near it and our neighbors have chickens and roosters that roam all over the neighborhood! It is kinda annoying when you are trying to keep your flower beds and stuff nice and the chickens are peckin the shit out of everything Thanks

i only waited 6 months

but (i feel) it was long enough to get the shih tzu established as "ruler" of the house, but they still are somewhat "growing up" together
i dunno, im probably insane for doing it so soon

i do suggest waiting on a house though, ill be getting one in may

My grandfather was a vet for several decades - ran the USDA livestock plague control division for around 10 years, taught at U of Kansas vet school - blah blah impressive credentials, retired to private practice when he was 50. He refused to see pit bulls, thought that anyone with kids who owned one should be jailed for endangering their kids. They're bred for one thing only: causing damage to people and other animals. Have them put down.

I knew an old guy who thought anyone who married a black person should be jailed.

they were bred to fight other dogs, but be docile around their owners and their children. Your grandfather probably saw a lot of sad pit cases, but it's not correct that they were ever bred to hurt people. Why on earth would a dog fighter breed an animal that would be dangerous to him?

my rescue pit is the biggest cupcake dog i've ever been around, and she's absolutely wonderful with kids....

i have a amstaff from the spca and she has been absolutely great. very intelligent and loyal. great with other dogs and kids. she is a very, very strong dog and could do damage if she chose to. but since she was a puppy, she has been around a full house of people and become very used to people. the only times she "bites" is when we are rough housing with her and she uses her mouth, but she has never (knock on wood) literally "bit" someone. by the way, she looks a lot like a pit which keeps me from takin her to the dog park and stuff. people in the neighborhood are scared of her but that's a joke. it's all about how you raise them.

by the way, i would advise anyone looking for a dog to adopt a amstaff mix from the wake spca. they are GREAT dogs.
