How can people really think we suffer from overpopulation?

Sure, some areas may be above their sustainable rate, but the vast majority of the planet is still open for settlement.

No, I don't want them deciding what I should do either. That's why I enjoy Liberty, Big Business can ask me to smoke all they want, I can always say No.

But if the Government ever asks me to quit smoking, saying No gets me arrested.

I've never met anyone that got arrested for not shopping somewhere.

That's the whole deal with the tobacco industry is that they intentionally tried to mislead the public about cigarettes back in the day.

This was actually very common practice, and it's only recently with gov. regulations that companies haven't been able to get away with it. There was some show on the History channel where they mentioned that Lysol told woman Lysol could be used as a feminine wash, and lots of women got cervical cancer as a result. You can say these women chose the Lysol, but that's because they thought it was safe. I'm sure there are countless more examples of business run amuck, but that's all I have knowledge of.

Ok, so, your argument that Government is more trustworthy than Companies is because Companies are run by human beings and human beings sometimes lie or make mistakes?

Perhaps you should state a different reason.

That said, it's freedom of speech. Evidently Lysol thought it was safe at the time (how could they have known otherwise?) But last I checked, no company has ever arrested someone for airing its dirty laundry, something our most trustworthy government does do.

We have a fairly long list of whistleblowers who fled the Tobacco industry to explain to the world why we put Surgeon General's Warnings on the friggin' boxes. Sure, some were harassed, but none were arrested and imprisoned for their acts.

Meanwhile, for disclosing the name of someone that worked for the CIA, a reporter landed herself in jail. If they ever find who disclosed the wire-tapping scandal to the press that individual will probably wind up on charges of treason (pleading to a lesser offense)

I didn't say the gov. is more trustworthy than companies, that's not what I was trying to argue at all (I fell the opposite, in fact). I was just saying that people don't have as much "choice" as they think they do, thus the line "i choose to do so-and-so" has to be evaluated in the context of what they are choosing.

It's reasonable to argue that someone coming of age now can choose to smoke because there's plenty of education out there on the issue. But with new technologies and products that hit the market every day, you have to be careful that the manufacturer isn't trying to deceive you (this effectively nullifying your ability to chose).

Basically, the issue is more complicated than "I choose."

Even with the most draconian Governmental oversight, I'm never going to buy a used car without checking it out first.

Well people die from alot of things. Tobacco users make a choice to use the product. They know the risk and danger so if they want to still smoke let them. If Tobacco wasn't killing people then something else would. Stop worrying about other people and just worry about yourself

A friend of mine works for Philip Morris. Last month, he ran a machine that made 42 million cigarettes in just 30 days--one man operating one cigarette-making machine. With demand like that, don't expect people to quit smoking anytime soon--even if they have to die for their habit. And, like my grandfather, many will.
