Well, Harry's gotta die in this one.

I like how they gave him more defined features that make him look like Radcliffe.

And what is the adult version????

The adult version is sold outside the US. It has more subdued coverart and a more "grown-up" font inside. It's the same book, just in a more adult package.

in the US version of the cover art, it looks as if both Harry and Voldemort are reaching out for something...

could be the wand....remember both of their wands have a tail feather from Fawkes

I thought both of their wands had unicorn hair...who knows tho, I haven't read the first one in ages.

But they've both gotta die. Since they're so connected to one another I really don't see how one could die and the other not.

In Goblet of Fire it's revealed that their wands both have feathers from Dumbledore's phoenix.

I don't think it's a satchel, I think it's the locket they thought was slytherin's at the end of the last book.

While we're interpreting the cover, notice the shadows of 3-4 people over Harry's right (our left) shoulder? Perhaps its another show down like they have in Goblet of Fire, in front of Death Eaters or others? Could that be a Hogwarts' arch?

I'm re-reading Order now, so i'm pretty well full into the whole sci-fi genre again! woot.

I'll start my analysis with the US cover. The cover shows Harry and Voldemort facing each other in some sort of arena. The cover is framed by curtains which is typical of the style for the American covers. I do not believe the curtains relate to a plot point in the upcoming book. I think that they are there to literally frame the cover image. There are human-shaped outlines in the background which suggests an audience. They may be spectators or they may be Death Eaters. We can't tell. Harry appears to be wearing a necklace which I believe is Slytherin's Locket which doubles as one of Voldemort's Horcruxes. I base this guess mainly on the fact that Slytherin's Locket is the subject of the cover of the UK adult version of Deathly Hallows and that it has already been mentioned heavily in the series thus far. I have not included a picture of that cover in this post. On the cover, Harry is looking upwards with his arms outstretched. It looks as if he's reaching for something or that he's waiting for a summoned object to arrive. Voldemort also has an outstretched arm, but it is unclear to me if he is acting in competition or opposition to Harry's gesture. He could be reaching for the same thing as Harry or he could be trying to prevent Harry from obtaining whatever he's reaching or waiting for. Voldemort's eyes seem to be split between Harry and whatever Harry has his attention on. I think Voldemort's face shows worry and/or fear. In the foreground, there is some sort of debris which suggests there there was either a battle or that the scene is taking place on a ruin. Given the audience and the arena or aqueduct like structure in the background, I think it would be reasonable to suggest that the scene depicts the final battle between Harry and Voldemort on the Hogwarts grounds. This battle could also occur and the Ministry for Magic or at another location that we can't recognize and that he's been seen yet in the series.

Now let us turn our attention to the UK cover. In the past, the UK artist has need be able to personally read the book before release. Instead, they are merely given a scene description from which to base there are. For that reason, the details of the cover art are normally not as significant as the US art. The UK cover depicts our favorite trio and a big pile of gold, jewels, and artifacts. To me, the portal in the background suggest something like a vault at Gringotts Wizarding Bank. There is obviously signs of conflict. Ron's face shows fear and surprise as does Hermione's. Harry appears more determined than the other and looks as if he's struggling towards a goal and reaching for something. I think that they are trying to obtain something from a Gringotts's vault. I don't know if they are in a fight or if they have run afoul of some Gringotts's security measures. If they are in a fight, the could be fighting anyone. All three members of the trio look a little battered sporting torn clothes and some light injuries. An interesting thing to me in this cover is that it appears that Ron is wielding the Sword of Griffindor. It's purpose is unknown, but many fans have suspected that it would be seen again before the series concluded.

I wish we could infer more about the upcoming plot from these covers, but without more information and the ability to place the images in their proper context, we'll just have to wait to read the books. I, for one, can't wait.

i guessed the same on the slytherin locket.

for the sword, it appears to me as if an elf (probably dobby, the house elf) is holding the sword (notice the ear behind harry's back, and the emaciated hand, long finger nails around the sword)
uk cover pic link http://www.the-leaky-cauldron.org/gallery/dhukfront

and lastly, i agree as well tht it'll all be speculation till july 21.

I don't think it's the real Slytherin's locket though. It think it's the fake. He began wearing it around his neck at the end of the last book, to remind him what needed to be done.

I believe the locket they are referring to is the one that was in Sirius's house, at grimmauld place...

while they were cleaning the place in book 5, they found a "locket that could not be opened"... most people think it is one of slytherin's old possessions that RAB (regulus black, sirius's brother) obtained...

and i think Dobby could be the heir to Gryffindor

I agree with your first two statements ^. I don't think Dobby's the heir, but I do think he's going to play an important role.

I'm convinced that these things are true:

Harry Potter will not die.
Voldemort must die.
Malfoy's dad will be Voldemort's human form.
Harry will take over the teaching position as most people believe.
Harry will be stripped of all his magical powers/abilities at the defeat of Voldemort.
Dobby loves the cock.

The End.

I was surprised how many high school and even college students there were when I went to the Book 6 midnight release. I suppose that all those kids who started with book one back seven, eight years ago grew up or something.

After re-reading OoTP, I am way more prep'd for the movie release. Now currently on 180 of tHBP and man I cannot wait for that one to come out. All of these re-reads are really helping myself get ready for the Deathly Hallows.

Oh and pre-order Book 7 at Quail Ridge Books next to Whole Foods off Wade Ave. I mean my g/f and I will be there, so why not? TWW Harry Potter love fest. With everyone hippie child in Raleigh!
