This is taking longer to "Check file CRC" that it took to download. Is this normal?

1) what driver support like at this point? printers, networking devices, sound/video cards, chipsets etc? whats the use of installing it if the those things arent in line?

2) what antivirus runs on vista currently?

^driver support is okay.....printer is no a go for me, but all my Nvidia drivers are taken care of. I have found that most things already have a beta Vista driver, so not a huge problem, but still kind of a pain.

Symantec AV has a Vista version. I don't think ITD has posted it yet though.

nice, they [ncsu] finally released SAV10

oh and i just noticed it doesnt look like they streamlined the installation for vista at all. i was hoping you could set all the install options, walk away, and come back in 30-45 to an installed os (ala sysprep). looks like it still halts during the process and waits for user input

The SAV10 installer you just linked will not work with Vista. Please see my post in the other thread for more info.

I got the downloader EXE for the DVD ISO off of MSDNAA while I was on my laptop. I realized I had more space on my desktop so I moved the file over there and when I go to actually try to download the ISO I get this error message:

An error has occured

The delivery client has encountered an error and is unable to continue.
Please review the error and try again.

Error Code: SDC00200
An error has occured, please ensure that enough disk space is present to complete the unpacking process and the files don't already exist in the destination folder. If errors still occur contact support through the ELMS system

I have plenty of space on my desktop so it's not a space issue. Could it be some kind of problem related to me downloading the installer onto my laptop then moving it onto my desktop?

^ shouldn't be. I've moved those downloader files from MSDNAA from one computer to another before and its never been a problem. By default, it tries to download to c:/temp or something though, so maybe go look and make sure theres nothing in there.

^Nope. I made a brand new "Vista" folder and pointed it there just in case, still get the same error.

Anyway I can snag this through the MSDNAA thing if im not in an ECE class?

Im taking a CSC class that counts for anything, and that class is absolutely demanding bleeding edge software

Meh, it's all been on order for about 2 months now. That's just when they're shipping the media for the student select licensing stuff. The worst part is, the only version availible in that licensing is Vista Buisness.

Perhaps you haven't read the 15 reasons to switch to Vista:
http://tech.msn.com/microsoft/article.aspx?cp-documentid=2664459>1=9013

1. It's the Interface, Stupid
Window borders are never a good reason to switch. I also like how this section brags about this version having the closest interface to a Mac than any other prior version of Windows.

2. Flip Over Windows Flip 3D
Wait, wasn't interface #1?

3. Live Thumbnails
Wait, wasn't interface #1?

4. Boost Performance With ReadyBoost
Meh, I'd rather keep as much RAM available for the task I'm currently doing (mostly games) that to have RAM allocated for things I might decide to do.

5. Cool Performance Tools
First thought. Oh, so you mean the task manager? Then I saw how they upgraded to include presenting warnings and errors in the event log in a calendar format.

6. Better Security
Two-way firewall sounds good. Of course Vista will be more secure than product sets that will not have support in the future. Probably the only real reason to upgrade.

7. Find Anything Fast With Search
I really can't speak much to this. I haven't really needed to search for files on my Vista system yet.

8. Nifty Software Gadgets
They finally incorporated some Stardock/desktopX stuff in Windows. Except you have to put them in the upper right corner as opposed to anywhere you want to.

9. Better Wireless Networking

10. Map Your Network

11. Better Graphics With Windows Photo Gallery

12. Become a Director With Windows Movie Maker

13. Better Notebook Support

14. File Sharing and Syncing

15. Protect Your Kids With Parental Controls

---------------------------

They missed a good one... If you need to provide a disk controller during Windows setup you are not forced into using a floppy drive.

bous: agreed. nvidia really dropped the ball on this one. seriously though, Vista has been completed for months now and they still don't have what you would consider a "final" driver out. sad really. i spent over $400 on this Geforce 8800 and i can't even play games in Vista yet.
