You also said they avergage 160-170, when at the super speedways it's 190 and above. Thats close enough to 200 for me.

nascar is not a sport ... racing is a sport

thats like saying the national hockey league is a sport

^^ yeah, but that's just on 3 tracks: hotlanta, talladega, and daytona. i bet the average speed of all the tracks combined would fall within 160 mph - 170 mph. that's probably the best average speed in all the various racing leagues, so i guess that's good for nascar. then again, nascar is kinda cheating with ovals and 30+ degreed banks. for comparison: formula 1 cars average around 150 mph and routinely top 220 mph (230+ mph at indy) on the circuits. however, they have to slow down for a couple of hairpins and other low-speed corners. during their races.

If they ran without restrictors, I'm willing to bet they'd hit 240 on the big tracks without any problems. Bill Elliott ran a 212 average at Talladega in a Thunderbird that wasn't nearly as aerodynamic as today's cars. Someone on here who's in the industry could probably do better at estimating the top speed based on power vs. drag.

^ this is why nascar is gay - stop being such pussies and race. if you are scared of going 250mph, get off the track, im sure there are younger, more inexperienced drivers that would like the challenge

more wrecks = more interest

If they want a challenge, they need to start building Porsche 962s again and run the 24 hour at Daytona without the chicane.

^^its not an issue of drivers being pussies its an issue of having cars go flying into the stands and killing 50 people.

that wouldn't happen.

It's happened before at far lower speeds. Granted, at the time safety for crowds was not what it is now, but safety would have to be increased even more if stock cars were allowed to perform at full capacity on superspeedways.

k, a car/parts may fly over/through the walls/fence once in a blue moon.

neither the owners nor the drivers want to wreck the car. drivers would obviously compensate for the higher speeds on the straights by braking more aggressively entering the turns. engineers would recalculate downforce, drivetrain and suspensions to find the optimum balance of top end speed vs. braking and cornering stability for each track. cars would be fitted with better aerodynamic, braking, drivetrain, suspension, and tire technology. after all that, nascar stock cars still will not be cornering at 220 mph like open wheeled cars.

they're not going to have cars flying off the tracks anymore than they do now. the occurance of such extreme accidents would probably decrease.

We're not talking about the tracks where they use the brakes. We're talking about the ones where it's foot on the floor for four hours.
