This is the kind of thing that gets commuted/pardoned at the end of the governor's final term (when his opponents can't yell "SONNY PERDUE SUPPORTS CHILD MOLESTERS!" during his campaign).

Anyway, the article is misleading:

Quote :
"But because of an archaic Georgia law"

It's not an archaic Georgia law. If it were "archaic," this man wouldn't be sitting in jail. The legislature didn't just "forget" about it. They knew it was there. It's not like we all entered a black hole where issues of interpersonal sexuality are not of major national importance.

It's just politically impossible for the legislature in Georgia to make sensible decisions about sexual morality. The reason is that their constituency consists mainly of backwards-thinking, salt-of-the-earth yokels who sit around at the dinner table chewing overcooked meat, drinking Budweiser, and concerning themselves with everyone else's business but their own.

The Deep South apologists can wave their confederate flags all they want -- but the fact is, the south is an extremely fucked up place, and these sexual morality laws are a direct byproduct of its culture.

Just juxtapose this young man -- living, breathing, healthy, full of potential -- with Terry Schiavo. Compare their relative plights, and the reactions to them both by their local governments and by the local polity. It's practically a case study in morally bankrupt ignorance. Born and bred.

On a more positive note, at least one multi-billionaire has the right idea:

Quote :
"
Personally, there is no chance I do business in the state of Georgia beyond the committment the Mavs have to play the Hawks until Genarlow is out of jail."

Tech Blogger Robert Scoble links to Mark Cuban's bit here - http://scobleizer.com/2007/01/28/thanks-to-mark-cuban-for/

Scoble's blog is the most popular blog on wordpress.com and one of the most popular tech blogs around. So add Cuban's business + sports audience to Scoble's tech audience, in addition to the main stream media coverage, and they're reaching a good amount of people

You're right, except that the state of Georgia doesn't allow for pardons by the governor. They're handled by the Parole and Review Board.

most of the people who were "deeply concerned" with schiavo were from the deep south.

trent lott, bill frist being the two biggest examples I can think of.

well, a bit extreme.

especially when you consider

Jacksonville
Gainesville
Ocala
Pensacola
Tallahassee

..and basically everthing else north of Orlando.

plus having been to the shithole called TampaBay/Clearwater, id say theres not much else there but a bunch of rednecks hating on blacks and latinos

well as they say about Florida, the further north you go, the more south you get.
My grandparents live in the panhandle about halfway between Tallahassee an Mobile, AL, and oh yeah - it's deep south.

Is there a free Genarlow grassroots movement?

I would even put a "Free Genarlow" bumper sticker on my car, and normally, I hate political commentary type stickers on a car more than I hate liberals and neo-cons combined.

EDIT:

I donated $20... I never would have heard about this if not for TWW.

Any state that was part of the Confederacy is part of the south, practically by definition. And it helps that they are a red state that was, no less, run by a Bush until recently.

Just because they have some pockets of civilization (as many southern states do), doesn't make them any less Southern.

Well, he's screwed then. Nothing like a cold, unelected committee to let this political hot potato rot underground for eight more years.

most likely rot alone too, after the media and blogosphere forget about the story by the end of next month. Or forget about it at least until he hits the halfway point of his sentence or something and 60 minutes does another "where are they now" story, and we see a resurgence of online cries of injustice, but this time not as strong because by then he will "only" have 5 years left, and there's not anything any of us can do about it anyways....

___
oh, whoops - i see you meant the "political hot potato" will rot for 8 more years. Not the kid. but all the same....

No, the kid is the political hot potato. I think the actual issue of the law is done for, after the legislature changed it.

But he's technically a child molester now and noone wants to help him. The sad fact of this situation is that there are people in this world, especially in the South, who do think he should be behind bars -- as unreal and unbelievable as that is to the rest of us.

Yeah let's see... Rather than placing blame on themselves or their daughter they used a statute that focuses bizzarely on oral sex to ruin someone's life... Yeah, they deserve more than harassement.

except that there shouldn't be any blame.

two kids hooking up is nothing to raise hell about.

If the boy was white, I just have a feeling that none of this would have happened.

What makes it not really a "deep-South" state isn't the state history, but the assloads of non-native southerners that live there now.

To say that Florida was a "Southern State" is crazy Florida is the only state in which you have to go north to get more southern. They are probably one of the most liberal and open minded states in the south.

So North Carolina isn't a southern state either, then?

Quote :
"That may not surprise North Carolina suburbanites who sometimes feel as if they live close to the last stop on the New Jersey Turnpike. A humming state economy, cheaper homes and lower local taxes lure thousands of Jerseyites each year.

They're part of a broader influx. Last year, North Carolina grew by 184,000 people, roughly the size of Winston-Salem."

They don't serve sweet tea in a good portion of Florida. That makes them not part of the south.
