Damn son. Good job.

And about "netting" 50k, yeah, I don't even come close. 51k before the government absolutely bends me over and has at it

I assumed he meant after since he said "minus all the shit they take out" opposed to minus taxes.

Computer Science, '06, no further education.

I like seeing all of the CSC majors in this thread It must raise the confidence interval to like 98% when stating that most of our graduates go on to get well-paying jobs.

it's not that hard as long as you try to qualify for plenty of tax deductions. it's amazing how many tax credits you can qualify for by having a home office and/or personal business.

maybe you should save for retirement through something other than just 401k. there's no reason for you to be throwing 15% of your paycheck into something you can't access without heavy penalties in the event of an emergency.

your emergency fund probably won't cover any real emergency, and pre-tax savings aren't going to seem all that appealing when you find yourself having to scrounge up money in the event of an emergency such as a major medical operation. it's good to invest in 401k if your have employer matching, but there are better investment options available.

Personally, I want to open up my own company at some point in the future, and that is going to take capital to pull off. you can qualify for loans a lot easier with tangible assets than you can with 401k assets.

if he's bitching about not being able to net over 50k and bitching about paying taxes on investments, then he doesn't have a large pile of taxable cash just sitting around. use a little common sense before you post again.

FYI: I have a very large pile of taxable cash sitting around.

My insurance will cover any major medical operation. If it won't, then I don't think it matters that I invested in my 401K if I have 500K in medical bills.

unless you have some premium insurance plan, then insurance will usually only pay 75-80% of your major medical expenses.

[Edited on February 2, 2007 at 2:45 PM. Reason : and yes, it does matter where you invest your money if you can't touch it without heavy penalties]

your big pile of cash is imaginary, or else you suck at investing.

cause your big pile of uninvested cash isn't even keeping up with inflation, even though you supposedly know how to invest money. meanwhile you're investing money into a 401k plan that you can't touch and will eventually have to pay taxes on just because not paying taxes now seems like a good thing.
