"You guys are all morons.

Ill spend some more time later when i get a chance to explain why. Until then come up with more CNET articles so I can explain them to you. I don't want to leave any stone unturned when i filter through your entire fucking quarry of incorrect and flawed comments regarding a tvs black level.

Keep in mind the televisions i personally own are a D-ILA front projector, and a CRT front projection. Besides projectors which i own, my room mate has a plasma. When I display a black image on the CRT projector you can not tell it is even on (the room is pitch black). Go display something black on your LCD and turn out the lights. THen turn the screen off. Is there a difference? Report back with your findings."

are you dumb or do you just not think we know what black is?
see lcds in the stores are cranked way up as bright as they go thus there is a lot of shine through... This is because of the commercial florescent lighting they have in the store. now if you go to say the avs forum and mimic someone's settings who knows what they're doing you'll find... HOLY BLACK BATMAN.... color settings energy settings and display modes all have a DRASTIC EFFECT.

now... turn your lights back on and open the blinds and see which one looks the best... cause most of us don't go into a black hole when we watch tv. I think you'll find colors wash out in your crt and the plasma reflects everything in the room.

But when it comes down to it ITS PERSONAL PREFERENCE VIEW EVERYTHING BEFORE YOU BUY IT.

ohh and "D-ILA" if you really spent that much money on a projector and you have a roomate i really really really hope you're sleeping with him... or at least romantically involved.

There is a lot of "shine through" as you so eloquently put it because of the fundamental operation of an LCD. The darkest you can get is the crossed value of the two polarizers times the back light brightness (assuming perfect operation of the liquid crystal). It doesn't take a brain child to logically conclude any light times a 98% “light block” filter (polarizers) is going to net some visible light during "black letterbox bars". Go to any forum you want, type in any settings you find into your LCD TV. Until you turn off the back light entirely you're going to be faced with reality.

On a side note : D-ILA projectors are dirt cheap because they use 500$ xenon bulbs which last 1000 hrs. Something you would know about if you had any clue about front projection (which you don't).

I'm not trying to tell you the LCD tv you paid for was not good. It just has the worst black level of every other TV technology available.

"is that sony model wall mountable? i've read mixed things on that one on avsforum."

Its a huge bulky gigantic CRT.

I dont do LCDs.

I also dont do DLPs (rainbow migraines).

A plasma that size is an oxymoron.

Summary : You're on your own.
