I heard on the radio this morning that this is the first time since 1966 that the ACC tournament had to sell tickets to the general public.

GG on having it in Tampa.

yeah my dad has gone every year for 28 years, but didn't go this year b/c it was in tampa. i was certain he'd wait until the last minute and still go, but i sold his tix for him last week. handing them over broke my heart

they should stick to greensboro and charlotte, with trips to the georgia dome and DC every couple of years.

I'm a little confused by this. This appears to have Duke with a 90% chance and UVA with a 100% chance of victory in their game against each other. Are these off due to the four Thursday games?

I see. I thought they were starting at their first match of those teams, but that would leave an extra game in those percentages.

Few student tickets sold

Ticket offices set aside a small number of tickets for students - about 10 percent - but historically, most of these tickets remain unused by students.

Unclaimed student tickets are due, in part, to the high cost of tickets and the tournament often falling near students' Spring Break, Martin said.

"Sitting inside a basketball arena during Spring Break is not appealing to our students," he said.

Though the ticket office at UNC set aside 60 tickets - an all-time low - for students this year, only 29 were bought.

"It's always nice to have students involved in the games," Lawing said. "They give games a lot more enthusiasm, a lot more support than the older donors. But money is still important to the conference."

Endiah Washington, a senior English major who transferred to UNC last year, was rearing to go to the tournament until she got sticker shock.

"If it was in Greensboro I probably would have paid for the tickets and went," she said. "But being in Tampa, of course that would mean I would have to pay for travel as well as ticket prices."

Washington attended the women's tournament last weekend in Greensboro and paid a student price of $79.

At Maryland, only three students bought tickets to the men's tournament, said Ryan Bowles, assistant athletics director for administration and championships.

"Most students will be traveling and saving their money for that," Bowles said of the overlapping Spring Break complication.

Wake Forest didn't sell a single student ticket, despite setting aside 100 and advertising to the leaders of the Screamin' Demons student fan club and student government.

"It's a combination of the game moving to Tampa and where our seats are located and the fact that our team isn't doing well," said Brad Darmofal, director of ticket office operations at Wake Forest and a former ticket operator at N.C. State.

Wake Forest, the 11 seed this year, has its seats located behind the basket. Schools' seats rotate among courtside, corner and behind the basket each year to ensure fairness.

"At State, we had more than 100 students who wanted tickets in '97-'98, so we had to take student applications and do a lottery," he said. "But here, we never got close to that number, so we didn't have to worry about it."

With the tournament out of reach for many students, Washington said the ACC and its institutions are doing a disservice to the teams.

After organizing a big group of UNC students to watch the women's team hit the court for a top-5 matchup in Maryland, Washington said she was convinced that student presence at away games has a positive effect on the players' game.

"When they looked up and they saw the section of fever students … you can just see it in their face that it just lifted them," she said. "Seeing that, I just knew it made a difference."

Washington said that enthusiasm and positive effect would carry over to the men's tournament.

"If they could see those students supporting them at the tournament, I think it would definitely make a big difference," she said."

Just keep the damn thing in Greensboro, permanently. It's the perfect location, and it keeps the massage parlors on Lee Street afloat for another year. It's a win-win situation for everyone.

If not Greensboro, then Charlotte. I hate Charlotte, but either of these cities are far better places to have a tourney than fucking Tampa.

There was an article in yesterday's News and Record comparing the Greensboro and Tampa arenas for the tournament, it was actually a pretty good write up, but I can't find it online. However, I did find this article from today's paper on the pack : http://www.newsandrecord.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070308/NEWSREC0105/703080309/1021/GTCOM
