I worked construction in durham for a year or so. Listen to the people who actually lived there not the people talking about getting shot. Sure there are some terrible areas (alot of them around I-85 where I worked) but there are also some very very nice areas. Just be smart and you won't have any issues with crime I wouldn't think. Hey look theres a bunch of people drinking forties in the middle of the street with lawn chairs at 11:30am, I think I won't go down that street.
As for things to do Durham Bulls games are the only thing I really care to do in Durham. You might try citysearch and the likes also. 3/6/2007 12:03:35 PM |

Southpoint after dark dangerous?
Are you kidding?
Maybe if you have pot on you and you're afraid of attracting the attention of the entire platoon of police officers protecting that area.
Look dudes, Durham is sketch but by no stretch of the imagination is it the most sketch place in America, the south, or even North Carolina for that matter.

my dad said it would be a good idea to take the State logos/stickers off of my car since I'll be in the ghetto & it is like displaying a "status symbol" and i guess that is something to consider. Because after all, nothing says "i've got status" like an NC State sticker...
seriously though- would i be asking for any kind of "trouble" by leaving my State stickers on my car? either because of the aforementioned thing or simply because i'll be in blue devil & tarheel territory?? 3/6/2007 6:30:34 PM |

I go around w/ NCSU stuff on my car and on my apartment windows and wearing ncsu logo's on clothes in chapel hill... doesn't really bother any body. They consider Duke their main rival, not us.
I was talking to the new manager at the vet clinic I work at in carrboro today about colleges since she's relatively new to the area and has kids looking at colleges. I was explaining how I was from a rival of UNC and even as an outsider she thought Duke/UNC rivalry out did the ncsu/unc one, so there is really no need to take down any logo's that you like.

I agree with the stay away from Northgate mall, especially at night, I don't feel comfortable going there alone anymore (i used to live in Northern Durham) Southpoint is fine, and the new super target is nice...Also I would go to the wal mart on 15-501 as opposed to the one in bragtown (which is part of Durham) 9th street has some nice eclectic shops and Elmo's diner is yum...
Check out where they have renovated the old tobacco buildings downtown by the Durham Bulls stadium, I know they added a lot of restaurants (mellow mushroom etc) and some shops there... Don't get all paranoid after reading this thread. Just be safe and use your common sense, lock your doors etc. Keep a map of Durham in your glove box if you get lost. and enjoy your new job!!! 3/6/2007 8:24:36 PM |

lol, nice. Yeah, I'm going to add Eno Park in North Durham to the list.... nice place to do kayaking, a little hiking. In the spring/summer they have festivals and stuff there (useless fact: its where the Woodwright Shop on PBS is (or at least was) filmed).3/12/2007 9:07:20 AM |

Durham isn't as bad as the local news stations and general stereotypes make it out to be. I lived in Durham from age 3 to 18 (now at nc state) and still go home over long breaks and in the summer. While all the jokes about getting shot are fun it gets old after a while, especially after a whole new year of meeting new people at State and hearing the same old gang/shooting/forties/crack jokes over and over again. There are really only a few bad places to avoid and you should be fine. Off the top of my head the two biggest places to avoid are just east of downtown where there is small but rough area and a few spots in braggtown (the walmart that was mentioned earlier is indeed a no-go). The two exits past downtown on the freeway (heading towards RTP/I-40) is a general area to avoid (just another way to think of what I mentioned earlier about just east of downtown). Now for the positives. Downtown has been fairly dead for many years but is currently under a sort of revival. They are redoing sidewalks and streets in many areas and the american tobacco warehouses next to the ballpark have lots of cool restaurants and business. They also have outdoor music during the summer before ball games for free. The stage is at the base of the old lucky strike water tower and is surrounded with water and fountains. It is very cool. Most of the cool stuff to do has already been covered by people earlier but i figured i would just throw in another voice supporting them.
Arab13, StillFuchsia and SandSanta have all been on the money.
As for the state stickers on your car. If you were to atually drive through the ghetto, you would stand out anyway, and you would know, and be in a hurray to leave so don't worry about it. 3/13/2007 7:06:29 PM |

I <3 Durham.
This town is a bumpin little city, I just moved up here from Raleigh to be closer to work. I especially like the post-industrial feel to it, reminds me of home a lot.
I've discovered some bad places already, parts of Mangum St. and down on Alston Ave. by Central where I wouldn't feel totally cool being by myself, but in general biking anywhere else around the city at night is cool.
The key to staying safe here is acting like you would in any other city: don't carry a lot of cash, be aware of your surroundings, act like you belong. If I can do it on a bike, you can do it in a car. 3/13/2007 8:42:37 PM |

Durham is really not that bad. I work downtown and haven't had any problems. Then again, it helps that our warehouse neighbor three doors down has a big ass rottweiler(sp?) hanging out the dock door too. Sure, I see some sketch people, but I saw plenty of sketch people when I was at State. I go to the new South Square late all the time--no problems. Husband and I often frequent the Ale House pretty late. 3/14/2007 9:44:39 AM |

alright, i've been in Durham for 8 days now and here's an update...
i feel relatively safe... other than the random/occasional yelling outside of my apartment at 3am....
i went to Duke gardens... the day it was 84 degrees and it was freakin beautiful.
and i went to Summit church today, it was pretty cool.
i think i spend way too much time at SouthPoint mall.... and Super Target.
i've gotten lost a few times in downtown but i just kept turning onto streets until i found the name of a road that i recognize. and only a few times i ended up in places where there were bars on all the windows...
coming from a place like Hickory, I must admit that the diversity here is quite refreshing, rather than scary.
i haven't really seen a lot of college kids out and about but i think they were on spring break...
all in all I'm happy to be here!!! 3/18/2007 8:46:16 PM |

ninth street is where its at. but stay away from Northgate, after living near there all my life it has def gone downhill. not that I know of off hand....
centerfest is a art fair expo kinda even that occurs in downtown durham (dunno when offhand) that's always fun to go to.
there is another used book store back off the road (the side road that connects broad with 9th makes that intersection where Nice Price is near) on the left side as you head toward 9th 3/23/2007 12:56:39 PM |
