What didn't you like about it?

It was pretty much exactly what it was advertised as. That's probably why people who thought it would be good before they saw it thought it was good.

Did you think it would be good before you saw it?

Check out the pre-movie posts. People were worried that it would be a yellfest and just a bunch of pretty pictures, and the fanboys assured us that it would not be. I thought it would be like sin city.

Instead, we get the passion of the christ and the religious fanboys to go with it.

"Yellfest" and "a bunch of pretty pictures" wasn't what I was expecting.

I was expecting an intense, action-packed movie meant to be a close adaptation of a graphic novel, and that's pretty much exactly what you get.

Any movie can be good if you have really low expectations, so that's not really saying much and doesn't actually speak to the goodness of the movie. I thought the director would at least be able to match his previous work. He didn't.

WHAT HAVE YOU DISCUSSED???

ALL YOU DID WAS SAY YOU DIDN'T LIKE THE MOVIE.

PEOPLE ARE ASKING YOU TO EXPLAIN WHY.

AT WHICH POINT YOU JUST CONTINUE TO TALK SHIT.

WTF.

^^^oh shit, I guess you did there, after much useless and unnecessary shit-talkery

my point still stands, you're complaining about not being able to discuss the movie rationally while you really made no attempt up until 3 posts up.

^^So your saying you thought dawn of the dead was better than this movie? Also the only bad thing you've actually said about this movie was that it was "dumb" I'd like to know what exactly you mean by that.

^ actually he didn't say what he didn't like he just said what some people thought it would be before the movie.

I went in after hearing of "standing ovations" and people claiming it to be "the best movie ever". Now I knew that it was not going to be the best movie ever, but I had really high hopes for it...

And I was actually pleased with the movie. I felt some of the plot took away from the movie, the meat of this movie and where this movie is so good, is definitely the fighting scenes and just the carnage after each wave. The political side of the war almost felt like it didn't belong, but it was ok because it was basically showing what all was going on with the war instead of just focusing on the battle.

The visuals were well done (I mean you could tell everything was green-screen but it wasn't GLARINGLY obvious so it was managable) and the score was nice put together. I just wish they'd have shown the "last" battle where they legion of Spartans were running down the hill, that would have been an awesome battle.

I'd say 8-9/10. I wouldn't rate it as one of the best movies ever made, but it was indeed a really good movie. One I'll likely buy when it comes out on DVD.

This movie is 2 hours of unbridled badassery.

I loved it and will definitely buy it.

I would let Leonidas have me if he wanted for hopes that his badassery would rub off on me.

i enjoyed the first half of the movie and thought it set up the battle well ... on the same token, this movie could exist solely as the last hour or so and still be nearly as amazing, and that makes me happy.

I saw 300 today at the IMAX in NY. All shows this weekend have been sold out. It was ridiculous. The most amazing scene on the IMAX was when the boats were out at sea crashing around during the hurricane. You heard the fucking wind and rain all around you. I wish it had lasted longer.

All in all I really enjoyed the movie. Does anyone else wish the executioner was in it more than 15 seconds?? I would love to see a guy with saws for arms fighting spartans.

I wasn't a big fan of the monster people. But that's just me.

I just saw it in the regular theater, but I'm pretty sure they amped up the volume. And all I could think was, "Thank GOD, now I won't hear it if anyone claps."

Maybe it did rip some things off from gladiator… but I feel like it was unabashedly drawing on all the best movies of its kind. There were definitely LOTR aspects there… especially the cave troll & elephants. It was slightly amusing that they made it out like the Spartans weren’t “boy lovers” like the rest of the greeks… but considering the comic book/movie’s target audience that wasn’t surprising… the same is true of maintaining 300 number since its not as good of a story if you tell it with the more historical higher number of Spartans and others there on the greek side. The visuals were great, the fight scenes were too, and it’ll be worth watching again… atleast when it comes to the $1.50 theater.

no supplanter the 300 is not the people who were there the first two days of the battle. 300 represents the spartans that stayed behind on the third day after they were surrounded. some say aroudn 700 or so other greeks stayed with them but the theme of the movie and the history of this event in general tends to draw the spartans as the winners of the war and the other greek's moderatly irrelevant.

they never really said how many other greeks' were there in the movie. And there is a myth about the executioner that there existed a general of Xerxces with swords for arms.

my interpretation is that his general was a master swordsmen or something akin to that so when he fought it seemed like his swords were his arms or something similar. All of the history we have is written by a "story teller" so it doesn't seem unlikely to me he may have painted him in that light.

also the numbers thing is pretty irrelavent. even if you take the most conservative estimates of the time, being around 2-4k greeks total and around 650k for the persians

that's still an outnumbered ratio of a pretty astounding 163:1

I didn't go into the movie trying to compare it to anything.
I didn't think about the historical innacuracy of it (hell, Invincible with Mark Wahlberg was WAY inaccurate).
I definitely didn't compare it to Sin City, because it wasn't even the same type of story.
I sat back and enjoyed the movie.

saw the movie twice.
302 Spartans
700 Thespians was the number they gave.

I say 302 instead of 300 because: when King Leonidas met his captain/general friend in the field (right before they left) Leonidas said something like, "is this all of them" and his general friend guy said something like, "yes, 300 of the strongest bravest soldiers we have"
So including the general and the king, that makes 302. Maybe the movie should have been called 302?

that was just what his friend brought. and frankly you only see them for about 10 minutes. The rest of the forces there could have been doing other things like guarding the pass that got overrun etc etc. they just never mentioned them

but !! I concede

if the movie was called 2000 I doubt it would be any less impressive.

good movie, really wish they hadn't had that scene towards the end take place in the wheat field. It makes you immediately think back to the end of Gladiator and takes your attention away from the events taking place in the movie that you're watching. The could have just as easily done that scene in that chamber thing or in the queen's room/house/whatever she lived in.

this movie was outstanding

i loved the end when he just looked at the incoming 100,000 arrows and throws his arm up in triumph... and the very end, with them all dead with arrows sticking out everywhere just looks badass, i'll be buying a few of these posters i think.

by the way that image at the end of 300 in the field was just like it was drawn in the graphic novels.

300 was initially published as a monthly five-issue comic book series by Dark Horse Comics, the first issue published in May 1998.

Gladiator came out in 2000..... who copied who?
