Atsur is a freakin' beast running the pick and roll. Hopefully we'll get someone that can run that like him. 3/11/2007 8:40:03 PM |

not clutch but a hell of a basketball player. If he had half the athleticism of most of the guards in this league he'd be one of the best, but he's damn good with what he's got. 3/11/2007 9:22:01 PM |

Atsur was pretty gritty to play so many minutes on his bad hamstring and all...
And I mean we do suck a lot without him because it leaves us with ZERO ball handling...
But he's not a great player by any means. In the six years I've been at NC State he's definitely not one of the top 5 players we've had.
In no particular order: Hodge, Grundy, Powell, Simmons, Costner are all easily better. I'd consider Melvin and a few others as better players as well.
He struggled a lot out there today and down the stretch he blew his defensive assignment (led to mccauley fouling) and jacked up a horrible three
Seems like a good guy and he gave us some good minutes over the years but we'll be fine without him.3/12/2007 1:28:05 AM |

i never said he was a great player.
i never said he was one of our best players, whether we're talking about this year or previous years.
i never said we wouldn't be fine next year.
but he was without a doubt the most important piece of the puzzle in regards to this particular team. his importance to this team surpassed the importance of even our best players recently, despite the record. and it wasn't necessarily how many points he scored, or what shots he took, good defense/bad defense, etc. it was more than showing up in the stat sheet or making this particular play or that particular play. overall importance you can't deny.
of course.... if his name was Engin Vick you would be slobbing his knob no matter what. 3/12/2007 1:54:08 AM |

Engin, you the man.

I mean he wasn't half as important as Brandon Costner. I mean the guy set the ACC tournament scoring record for us.
Atsur's importance was basically becasue we had ZERO ball handling without him... i mean thats the equivalent of saying a goalie with a 3.50 GAA was your team MVP just because he was the only goalie on the roster...
I understand what you were saying, and its nice to give tribute to a senior... i just dont want anyone getting carried away about a guy who was anywhere from average to solid but far from spectacular. 3/12/2007 3:06:46 AM |

thats basically what i was saying early in this thread...i never really like atsur here, and the way he plays pg, is just keepin us close to herbs slower, dull paced game...im glad he was around to help us out this year and to fight through an injury, but i wont miss him at all...
we'll prob suck on the point next year for what i would hope would be just the first half of the season, at least till the new pg comes in and takes over and learns the system 3/12/2007 3:12:16 AM |

I think Engin is solid and keeps the game in-line. I would like to have him equally if not more than a Singletary (UVA) type guy. I know he's not the flashy playmaker but what he does do (assist/turnover margin, tempo, couple 3's per game) is vital. You will be missed Engin! 3/13/2007 10:04:28 AM |

I'll miss him, but as far as being a PG goes I put him on about the same level as Tony Bethel. 3/13/2007 10:13:42 AM |

^I think Bethel would have been solid if he could have been a 4 yr player here but he was also plagued with injuries. Personally, I feel good when the ball is in Engin's hands. It's like the opposite of how you feel when it's in Gavin Grant's hands. (No I'm not bashing on Gavin b/c he's the second highest scorer on our team, I'm just saying he has nubs for hands.) 3/13/2007 10:16:12 AM |

no matter how good our pg turns out to be next year, not many pg's out there will ever have the heart this kid has. he's not the fastest or the biggest threat to drive to the basket...but damn he can lead a team...we'll miss ya engin
he can dribble backwards better than anyone i know
