Lol, really? That must have been one POS 5.0 to scare you going 100 mph. Either that or you picked a really narrow road to try. 100 is nothing on the interstate, even with moderate traffic. Not saying what Mario did was prudent, but for the average Joe in a well maintained car driving around 100 (on a not crowded interstate) requires very little effort.4/20/2007 6:36:49 PM |

^ I'll clarify a bit.
It was a convertible w/ the top down, on one of the bumpiest, most sunk-in roads in some puny town. Hitting dips you can't even see coming at 100mph was a tad scary. My e-peen isn't so big that I won't admit it. 4/20/2007 11:37:29 PM |

^lol, okay that figures then. Next time try doing it on the interstate, it'll seem like cake. Depending on the traffic situation you can go really fast on the interstate and have nothing to worry about (110+ for 30 minutes straight no problem). All about conditions. 4/21/2007 2:33:18 AM |

Yeah, Ive taken my Audi 1.8L 4cylTurbo up to 100mph (pulling like 5800rpm though ) and it wasnt scary or dangerous at all. Im sure that lambo gets up to 130mph smooth as silk.
Its all an evil N&O conspiracy, i tells ya! 4/21/2007 12:11:07 PM |

while we're on the subject...
I took a Toyota pickup up to 104 on I-95 a while back ...so, I know a 5.0 can do a lot better than that 4/21/2007 12:51:46 PM |

Mario getting no love

Quote : | "1. Houston: Mario Williams, DE, N.C. State.
The Texans could've had Reggie Bush. They could've had Vince Young, too. Instead, they chose Williams because, owner Bob McNair said, they wanted a top defensive player to combat Peyton Manning. Well, they got one ... only his name was DeMeco Ryans, the NFL's Defensive Rookie of the Year. Williams made more money, more news and fewer plays than Ryans. A lot fewer. To make matters worse, the Texans had to shop for a running back and quarterback after the season ended. When you have the first pick of the draft, you take the best player in the draft. Houston didn't, and now it's paying for the mistake." |

Mario had plantar fasciitis last year. I didn't realize that.
Quote : | "The key to the pass-rush improvement clearly lies with Williams, who struggled through much of his rookie campaign, in part because of a case of plantar fasciitis, a painful foot condition that plagued him almost from the outset of the season. The condition prevented the former North Carolina State star from getting any kind of burst off the snap with his right foot. There were also occasions, though, when Williams appeared to take snaps off, as he did in college.
To his credit, Williams started all 16 games, usually having to submit himself to at least one pregame injection to get onto the field. Williams eschewed surgery, and his foot is significantly improved with offseason rest. He also should benefit by being moved to the weakside end spot, where he won't encounter as many double teams as he did in 2006.
"Maybe that will make it a little easier, but then, it's not supposed to come easy in this league," said Williams, who is just 22. "Easy or not, though, we've got to find a way to get more pressure this year. We have to create havoc up front."

^ yeah, it wasn't really widely reported. I remember hearing about it at the end of the season and being surprised I hadn't heard more about it.
Honestly I believe the media preferred to take the "bust" angle with Mario instead of coming to his defense on the injury. He doesn't play a sexy position like QB, didnt go to a big school, didn't get a lot of national recognition in college, and was playing for a crappy team with zero fan appeal. It just wasn't worth the effort to defend his poor play since casual fans didn't know much about him to start with.
The main criticism was his lack of burst so hopefully the foot was the main reason for that. You're just not going to get sacks in the NFL without more explosion than he had last year.
I like the fact that they are moving him to the weakside. He's a little too small for the strong side and defending the run at the point of attack wasn't one of his strengths. This way he'll be able to concentrate more on pass rushing and improve on his stats. Also, his speed will be more of a factor because he'll be pursuing on a high percentage of the plays instead of just getting pushed around at the line. 6/22/2007 5:50:11 PM |
