Bridget, I would answer you, but I could only answer by talking to the people involved, and hooksaw already showed me the error of my ways there.
Just pick one and go with it, that is the only true way to solve a problem. 4/24/2007 11:51:26 PM |

oh now it's coming into place. ive known a few correctional officers. and ive got relatives in various levels of Law Enforcement all the way up to the federal level.
i shit you not, as far as Law Enforcement goes, correctional officers are singularly the most sloppy, unskilled, poorly-trained, out of shape, least intelligent, and most likely to be corrupted group in the entire Law Enforcement profession..
these are the people who cant cut it to be a city cop or county deputy. take the battery of tests to be a county deputy, and if you cant cut it for deputy, they'll say, "well, we've got openings at the jailhouse if you want to do corrections"
hell, ive got more respect for a Mall Security Guard as a professional and as someone i would trust to protect myself and the public, than i do for Correctional Officers.

^ Ha. . ."poorly-trained" (sic)! You have no idea what you're talking about--and you can't even post the term at issue correctly. Do not hyphenate ly adverbs that appear before ed adjectives, dummy.

1. fear of criminals 2. fear of the police 3. don't care about police/criminals/crime/anything but myself and my family 4. "shyness" 5. lack of trust/faith in the police 6. lack of pride in the community 7. general, social attitude towards the police (you just don't talk to them like you don't touch a hot stove) 8. "stop snitching" campaign 9. opting out of mainstream society; creating and enforcing own laws 10. desire to maintain reputation by not snitching
I seriously think this has to do with all these things here. I watched a little bit of the Anderson Cooper thing and some of it was interesting. I do not think this is completely due to hippity hop music and the "stop snitching" campaign...this happens in other communities, as well. In fact, it's been happening for so many centuries in so many places that I don't believe we can get rid of it altogether.
And, honestly, it's not a real concern to the rest of us. If some kid in the ghetto gets shot dead, and nobody comes forward with any information, that really doesn't affect me...at all. We could just leave these areas alone. The police can just consider them off limits, and we'll just let it go. It sucks for the people there who want some law and order that isn't enforced by criminals, but I'm starting to get the feeling that even some of those people won't cooperate with the police. So, you know what...fuck 'em. Fucked up for the kids though.

abandoning segments of society is a horrific idea unless you plan on walling them in and placing guards every 5 feet, and i hope you dont think that is a good idea. 4/25/2007 7:54:12 PM |

New feelings...
We need to figure out a way to put the power in the children's hands.
Like, when tourists go to Amsterdam...you go see a sex show, smoke a joint, get wasted, visit a prostitute, and THEN you go back to your hotel room. These kids don't get to go to a hotel room. They have to live in a red light district.
And that is what they know life to be. My friend took an African American history class in high school, and on the first day, the teacher asked the class what percentage of the American population they thought was black, and nearly every black kid responded over 60 percent. Cause that's what they're communities look like, and they've never seen any different. They are so isolated in these segregated "communities" (if you can even call them that) that they don't know just how large the other "half" is and how well the other half lives, that most folks live in decent neighborhoods where people don't hang out on the corner pushing drugs, shooting one another, and selling their bodies.
And the ones who suffer are the children, and we've really fucked up our attempts to help the children. So we need to empower them to help themselves. Get them to believe that they deserve better living conditions. Get them into trusted relationships with the police where they know they'll be protected for standing up for their right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of fucking happiness.
I feel sympathy for the addicts, prostitutes, and drug dealers. I'm sure they got dicked over at one time or another...but that doesn't give them the right to terrorize these neighborhoods, to ultimately hurt the children the way they were hurt when they were kids. Send them to prison, send them to rehab...I don't care. Just get them out of the neighborhoods so that the families and the children will have a chance to succeed.
It's our duty to protect the children.

I don't have any answers to the problem, nor am I gonna pretend like I do.
But I teach in a poor county and the "don't snitch" mentality gets on my nerves. It does provide some funny stories though. Funny to me anyway.
The first involves two sophomores and a jacket (the ubiquitous black jacket with orange lining). The resource officer heard one of the kids in my class possibly had drugs on him, so he came in my room and asked to see him. The kid, recognizing his danger, quickly passed the jacket -- which obviously housed the marijuana -- to his friend in front of him. The cop, seeing what happened, asked the second kid who the jacket belonged to.
"I ain't no snitch."
The cop says: "Fine, you can come with me, too."
So the second kid snitched.
I loved how quickly he changed his tune just at the thought of spending a couple of days in out of school suspension.
Second story:
This one involved one of my freshmen. He lost his cell phone and was whining about it all day. Says he knew who took it. But the phone thief wouldn't give it back. Blah, blah, blah. So I asked him if he had called the cops. "Nah. I ain't a snitch."
Won't snitch to get his own stuff back!
These kids are idiots.
I finally banned the word "snitch" from my classroom. It carried the same consequences as saying fuck, talking about gangs, or using any of the many n-word derivatives. 7/19/2007 8:06:09 PM |

snitches are usually not good people.
the few good people who snitch usualy don't know what they're getting into....
legalization of drugs, gambling and prostitution would end most of the need for snitching
Bridget is way fucking off
