hey check it out:

the new guy with 50 posts has decided to join TWW and use his time earnestly convincing everyone of the virtues of joining the Libertarian Party.

This has never happened before.

I'm curious.

Does anyone believe the Libertarian party (and any other party for that matter) should be prevented from getting on the NC ballot?

Do you feel it's fair that third parties have to prove their worth by producing reams of signatures, while the two parties-in-power get in automatically?

The last thing the Dems and Pubs want is more competition (choices). One thing gov't is good at is preventing entry to new players through regulation. The state of NC believes all you need politically can be delivered by the GOP or the Dems. Do you agree?

you fundamentally do not understand our voting system or our constitutional government

Duverger's Law has proved that in every "First Past the Post" (winner takes all) voting system a two-party rule is guaranteed, and they will *never* allow a third party. this is not by intentional effort or shadowy conspiracies. it is foundational to the system.

you are sadly misinformed if you think that a third party can co-exist with the 2 mainstream parties in the American political system as it exists, and has existed for some 150 years or more..

the only way you could ever get any Libertarians in as third party candidates, is to CHANGE THE VOTING SYSTEM TO A PROPORTIONAL REPRESENTATIONAL SYSTEM -- and then we might as well change our Constitution to be a Parliamentary form of government while we're at it.

fat chance on that.

you do have one other option. and its historically proven to work. It is to completely and irrevocably destroy the GOP so that it never comes back... then it will still be a 2-party system: Democrats vs. Libertarians.

'which is, of course, how the GOP came to exist. they were a third party fringe movement until they wiped the Whigs completely out of existence and took their place.

and I'll support that effort.

(you could, theoretically, knock out the dems. but i think its safe to say youll get the majority of your crossover members from dissatisfied ranks in the GOP)

^ It's better than fascism (Republicans in 20 years) and socialism (Democrats in 20 years).

Look at examples of when there is no government and get back to me.

it is nothing more than lawlessness.

You seem to have libertarianism confused with anarchism there, nutsmackr. And I'm sure you know better...

When I was a registered big-L Libertarian I used to say no, but after watching them turn into a bunch of raving moonbats I've since changed my mind.

Getting enough signatures to initially qualify isn't difficult for an organized grass-roots movement, and once they hit that point all they have to do is get a certain percentage of the vote.

The issue isn't the "problem" of a two-party system, it's the reality that in our two-party system at least one of the major parties will co-opt any popular idea that materializes from a third party...

I disagree. I think it's very difficult having to get signatures every year. And the fact that smaller third parties have to get permission from Pubs and Dems to get access to the voters really irks me.

One reason I'm starting to think entryism is not a bad strategy. Then when they get sufficiently large enough and a party leader who is clearly big government (like George W. Bush), just split off. That way all the legwork on getting libertarians elected would be as Republicans, than they can split off and would be Libertarian.

The most idiotic thing about third parties, besides ballot access, is that the federal government requires all third party members to sign a pledge saying they are not attempting to overthrow the government. Republicans and Democrats of course don't have to sign this pledge.
