Each flight has 10 seats at $10. Once those sell, the next 10 are $20, then $30, and so on until it is filled.

a couple of quick questions about this...

1) it seems that the flight times are very limited. Only one per day for most flights, but some have two per day. On the ones that only fly one (for instance GSO - Ohio), the flight lands too late to board the connecting Ohio-Seattle flight. This would mean that I have to buy a hotel in some obscure place in Ohio?

2) Also, you have to book all of these individually. You can't book them as GSO-OHIO-SEATTLE, SEATTLE-OHIO-GSO. This is kinda silly. Also, the fees associated with the longer flights are insane. A $10 ticket with a $70 fee/tax. WTF? This isnt very user friendly.

"Skybus Airline Picks Greensboro as New Base

Posted: Today at 11:31 a.m.
Updated: Today at 12:09 p.m.

Greensboro — Gov. Mike Easley was expected to announce Monday that Skybus, a discount airline based in Columbus, Ohio, will locate a new hub operation at Piedmont Triad International airport.

The move will create 375 jobs over the next two years. Most of the jobs will be for pilots and flight attendants.

Skybus is known for offering 10 or more seats on flights for $10 each. PTI will become its second “focus city,” with all flights being non-stop from PTI to other cities and back.

Easley was to make the formal announcement at PTI.

The airline will receive up to $3.98 million in state incentives through a job-development program. The state Economic Investment Committee approved Skybus for the job development investment grant Monday morning.

Skybus officials told the North Carolina Department of Commerce that the company would invest $350 million in the expansion. Most of that money is for new aircraft.

The airline serves nine cities out of Columbus. It recently cancelled service to two West Coast destinations (San Diego, Seattle area), citing increased fuel costs.

The airline reportedly also considered Richmond, Va., for the base. However, Virginia officials denied they offered Skybus as much as $50 million in incentives for the operation, according to the Richmond Times-Dispatch..

Landing Skybus is the third major air industry win for the area in recent years. FedEx is creating a hub at Piedmont Triad International, and HondaJet picked the airport for its new headquarters and manufacturing facility.

Skybus, a low-cost, no-frills airline, offers direct flights from its Columbus hub to 19 other cities. Direct flights are also available from Boston to two cities in Florida.

However, Skybus recently said it would stop flights to the Seattle area and San Diego due to increasing fuel costs. The airline also is cutting back on service to the Los Angeles area.

“We only fly into airports that do not suffer from severe congestion – after all, airplanes only make money when they are flying,” Airbus Chief Executive Officer Bill Diffenderffer says on the airline’s Web site. “We use the Internet for everything from sales to customer support – like Amazon.com. If you want a sandwich and a coke during your flight, you’ll pay for it – just like you do in any other business. But mostly we just keep things simple.”

The airline flies AirBus A319 aircraft. Most models have room for 156 passengers.

Skybus was formed in early 2003."

Any first hand accounts?
I saw there is a fee for all checked baggage. $5/per bag up to two bags
Also for food/beverage $2 soda $5 spirits
So far it looks like I can fly round trip GB to Fort Myers for $92 in April
This is great, anything I'm missing?

^^ Never been, but I have read some things.

Make sure your checked bags are under the weight limit or you will get a serious surcharge. Also, be prepared for an in flight sales pitch for their catalogue items.

I live in Columbus so I have a direct hub to a lot of places. It's really a nice flight but they try to sell you a lot of stuff on the side. Bags are $5, blankets and pillows were charged as well as food. But if you can live without those things then the flight is really cheap. I'm flying to Niagara Falls for the 4th of July and it cost my about my wife, baby and myself and with taxes $170. Last year we went to Ft Myers for a $200.

Whats nice is there is no layover and you aren't on a tiny little plane. Only problem is the airports can be kind of small and lacking things like rentals and whatnot. You also don't have a terminal so you have to walk on the tarmac. I'd recommend it though.

SkyBus sucks ass big time. My flight was suppose to fly out at 7:30 on Thursday the 20th. We got there they had immediately delayed out plane til 1120 because of "complications." So we hang out in the airport and have a few drink then decide to go thru security to sit and wait on the flight at 10. We all get to the gate and the plane had been cancelled.

I go to the counter and they treated me like shit and was basically like sucks to be you. I asked to speak to the manager and he said "well i am the manager and if you want someone else to talk to the guy beside me is an assistant flight attendant." i fucking flipped. I was angry at the flight getting cancelled, but I was more angry that they wouldnt provide a hotel for us to stay at for the night and the way he treated all of us.

We had to fly STANDBY the next morning at 8:55am.
We ended up staying in a red roof inn for 55$, while paying for a badass hotel in chicago.

^^What the hell else do you expect? You are flying on an airline that offers some seats for $10. And you are expecting them to pay for a hotel room for you? You get what you pay for. I wouldn't be pissed at all in that situation. Maybe a little mad, but I would be smart enough to realize the situation I put myself in and not overreact.

My roomate just used it(skybus), and their computer messed up and had him flying to new york today landing at 6:50, and instead of having him return tomorrow had him set to fly back 18 minutes later. He is certain he clicked to return the next day.

They fixed it for him, but he was lucky he caught it. Just a heads up.

"Skybus Airlines will cease all operations effective Saturday, April 5.

Skybus struggled to overcome the combination of rising jet fuel costs and a slowing economic environment. These two issues proved to be insurmountable for a new carrier.

We deeply regret the impact this decision will have on our employees and their families, customers, vendors, suppliers, airport officials and others in the cities in which we have operated. Our financial condition is such that our Board of Directors felt it had no choice but to cease operations.

Passengers holding reservations for Skybus flights scheduled to depart on or after Saturday, April 5, 2008 should contact their credit card companies to arrange to apply for a refund. More information for customers and others will be made available on the Skybus web site (http://www.skybus.com) as it becomes available.

All flights for Friday, April 4 will be completed. Passengers holding reservations on flights for Friday, April 4 should check in for their flight at a Skybus kiosk at the airport instead of the Skybus website."

this was stupid. eitehr be cheap or be normal. don't pretend to be cheap but really be more expensive than southwest yet shitty at the same time. getting a 10 dollar seat was like winning the lotto. usually to decent places flghts were over 100 and to off the wall airports.

ftw

if you're gonna be skybus keep to your theory for the entire plane, not just ten seats because once your price approaches the ones above you have no chance of matching their quaility

If you fill every plane you will make a profit.

I'm pretty fucking pissed. I just bought a ticket with them 6 days ago for a late June flight. Do they really expect us to accept that they JUST decided they couldn't keep the business up? Could they not have at least had 30 days of flying after their announcement of closing? And I was lucky enough to be browsing and find that notice on their website. WHERE IS MY NOTIFICATION EMAIL???!! I feel really bad for the people who have flights within the next few weeks and will have to shell out $900 a ticket now with another airline. And what's with this "contact your credit card company for a refund". They'll just tell me to contact skybus!

Roll your eyes if you want to, but after reading about passengers stranded in all sorts of destinations because Skybus wasn't honest enough to tell them that 30 minutes after they flights land the company was closing, I now regard Skybus with nothing but contempt for being an absolute immoral, dishonest, and selfish company.
