Thats what I posted back at the beginning of the month. Well they just fired me yesterday. Said it wasn't me, just that the company doesn't have the money to pay the payroll right now so they have to let a couple people go. Won't even hire anyone for my spot after I leave. When asked if I have any questions, I asked "So does this mean I don't get my raise?" That confused him for a bit

^^^ haha. no. Thats not the case at all. I went back to turn in some stuff on Friday and the people in the office were all telling me how hard its been trying to pick up all the work that I've been doing. It's a small office with only about 6-8 people in it for the most part (the rest are out in the field) so its not like they can spread my work over 20 other people. 5/20/2007 9:52:56 PM |

eyah im really curious about you guys who have these double digit raises, and are pretty fresh out
promotions? what do you do? size of company?
i mean
did you start out at something lower as quasi provisional, then after performance is accepted, bring you up higher?
i just dont see getting a top dollar paying job out of school, then popping a 10-15% raise so soon without a nice promotion going along with it.
otherwise, more power!

In my personal experience, I've found employees of the government agencies i've worked with to be extremely lazy and have a questionable work ethic.
I worked for the dept. of forestry helping out with their IT stuff summer of 1998. I was not well liked by my peers because I actually got shit done in a timely manner and exposed their lack of productivity. Their LAN was a trainwreck of daisy chained hubs and unlabeled cabling, no consistency in application installs, no server backups, etc. Everything that could be done wrong was. I had that shit right in a month.
Of course being that they were a government agency, they didn't get fired, but i imagine they didn't get any raises for a while, whereas I got one within two weeks.
After I left, I put a bid on replacing all of their non y2k compliant PCs statewide and based on what I did that summer, they picked me and I made a fortune building and selling about 500 PCs to them over a two year period.
I still deal with customers who are government agencies all the time, and they just don't give a fuck... work ends at 5p.m. whether their network is up or not. They're only a step above union labor as far as work ethic goes. 5/24/2007 10:05:23 AM |

I have a few friends like that. They started out making crap, just trying to gain more experience and then their pay was brough up to the industry avg or slightly above after a few months. I started out with a nice salary out of school, so I'll just be happy if my raises are large enough to keep up with inflation.5/30/2007 9:26:02 AM |

i am a compensation consultant working for a large HR consulting and outsourcing firm. ~2.9bil in revenue
I have received double digit raises for the past two years, in addition to that last year i received 3 random "market adjustments" that were $2k, $3k, and $1.5K. My most recent raise came in conjunction with a quasi promotion. I had no real change in responsibilities, it was mainly a title change and an increase in my hourly bill rate.
When i was hired in, I was hired at about 40% of market (I actually know this stuff, I'm a compensation consultant). It made sense because they dont normally hire people straight out of college (or in my case 6 months out of college). However, shortly after hiring me, the market for my particular field shifted dramatically along with the kind of hiring power my company has (market-leading consulting and outsourcing firm). Because of all of the perceived conflict of interest issues springing up and the media over-hype of executive compensation a lot of boutique compensation firms have sprung up pulling away consultants from the big firms (my firm and our two main competitors, mercer and watson wyatt).
This shift has given consultants a lot more power in negotiating their salaries and the companies a lot less.
In the end....very good times for me.6/8/2007 12:33:51 PM |

I am a teacher in Maryland, and I just got my cost of living raise plus I am getting paid about 20% more for working 12 months instead of 10. I started teaching in 2005 as an uncertified teacher making 32k. I am going into my third year teaching, still uncertified, and will be making 45k this year, plus the opportunity to make another 20.5k in bonuses over the next 3 years! Gotta love teaching at a struggling school. 7/16/2007 8:05:38 PM |
