i think they kept missing out on some, then they just couldn't get good value at the picks they were at. Maybe they're banking on getting one out of a Jenkins trade(if he gets traded) or maybe they're thinking of moving Davis back to S 4/29/2007 5:04:54 PM |

i was very pleased with the panther's draft. i give em a B+/A-. i think the first 4 players they drafted could start this year in Beason, Jarrett, Khalil (definitely), and Charles Johnson.
The Day 2 Picks, who knows. You just gotta trust Fox and Hurney on those ones
I really wish we could trade jenkins for a bad ass safety and/or tight end. then we'd be set 4/30/2007 10:49:44 PM |

I agree we got good players, but we didn't really fill our needs.
Beason is a good LB, but we really needed a MLB as opposed to a guy more comfortable on the outside.
Jarett was a good pick for the future, but we essentially traded Key for him...we could have just kept key and filled another need with that pick.
Khalil was the best center in the draft, but we already have 2 great centers, one of which was paid a boat load of money to come over last year.
Johnson is a really good DE....I think this was the best pick considering where we got him, the need it fills, and talent level, but I doubt he'll start unless pepps or mcclover gets hurt.
That leaves us with a patchwork secondary, questionable LB corps, and smith at WR with only ? behind him, but I trust foxy to coach em up.5/4/2007 9:31:46 AM |

A center should capable of sliding out to guard. More than likely wouldn't be cut out to switch to a tackle position unless they are very athletic, but guard isn't much of a change from center when it comes to assignments and techniques. 5/4/2007 10:37:59 AM |

Yeah and seeing what we just did to Keyshawn, I'm sure Hartwig knows that if he plays poorly or gets injured again that his fat contract is pretty much done for.
I just know that we are going to pick up a safety from FA before the start of this season, you wait and see....

Quote : | "4. Jessie Daniels, S, LSU (signed to rookie free-agent contract by Panthers): Daniels was the OTHER stud safety out of LSU. Whereas LaRon Landry went sixth overall to Washington on Saturday afternoon, Daniels went unselected this weekend. A ferocious hitting strong safety while down in Baton Rouge , he's an impact player who can make a difference at the next level. Daniels started for three years, and played in four straight bowl appearances for the Tigers. He didn't participate in the combine because of a strained hamstring. Questions about his speed that might have hurt his draft stock. Carolina, who traded out of the 14 pick and thus missed out on Reggie Nelson and Michael Griffin in the first round, signed Daniels on Monday. Mike Minter and Shaun Williams aren't getting any younger. There's a good chance he makes an instant impact for the Panthers.

with Hartwig's contract he might have some protection against that b/c of the salary cap hit the team will take if they cut him.
We will pick up a S, but who's out there? Branch, or Williams are about our two best options, and we just cut Williams.5/4/2007 1:32:05 PM |

"New Roster Comes To Life"
(3-day minicamp starts today in Charlotte)
Quote : | "The Panthers coaching staff will get a first look at the results of the team's offseason moves at a three-day minicamp (closed to the public) that begins today. Here are four burning questions facing Carolina:
With Keyshawn gone, who will be the starting receiver opposite Steve Smith?
Drew Carter or Keary Colbert probably will get the most snaps during this camp, because they know the system. Expect rookie Dwayne Jarrett to be the starter when the regular season starts, unless he falters. Carter or Colbert would have to show a lot more than they have the past couple of seasons to win the starting job.
Who are the safeties?
An overhaul at this position hasn't gone according to plan. Veteran Mike Minter took a pay cut in anticipation of an infusion of young legs that would push him into a backup role. Those young legs haven't arrived, and he remains the starter at free safety. Strong safety is the biggest question mark on the roster. Deke Cooper and Nate Salley will work there during this camp. The eventual starter probably isn't on the roster.
What will the playbook look like?
The biggest change will come in the run-blocking scheme for the offensive line. Offensive coordinator Jeff Davidson will switch from a power-blocking system to a zone-blocking system, hoping to take advantage of a group of linemen who are quick and athletic. Also, receiver Steve Smith will be put in motion more often, and he'll play all the receiver positions in an attempt to confuse defenses.
Is quarterback David Carr here to back up Jake Delhomme or take his starting job?
The Panthers have been emphatic in saying Delhomme is the starter. He'll get all the first-team snaps. Barring injury, he will open the season as the starter. Carr is a viable alternative if Delhomme struggles, and the Panthers won't hesitate to make a switch now that they've got a better option than Chris Weinke. " |

Like I didn't understand last year with us thinking Bill would come here...I don't see how any panther fan (myself included) would even possibly THINK that he would come. My reasoning is different...how is a coach on a hot seat when he took you to 2 nfc championship games already and 1 super bowl???? It's not like our bad years were even that bad. 7-9 was not bad in my opinion for the circumstances. 5/5/2007 2:15:12 AM |
BeerzNBikes All American 3736 Posts user info edit post |
Ditto^. But the talking heads on radio and TV all have stated that Fox and/or Hurney are both on the HOT SEAT after that team we had last year didnt even make the playoffs. We really had a much better team than how we played, but I think its still too early to give up on foxy/hurney. However, the media rules in these situations, so if we miss the playoffs again then the spin they put on it will likely send at least one of them packing...

Well, there was a lot of speculation that the reason Fox was so quick to want to get rid of Henning was to put more of the blame on last year's lack of success on him.
The past 2 years we have been consensus favorites to win the SB, but the past 2 years we really haven't been the team we are on paper.
Two years ago we were a one man show on offense and had a decent defense, then last year we kept pissing away the games in the last quarter.
Fox knows he has a lot of people looking at him this year. I really like the guy, and I hope we have an awesome year but I think there is room to start speculating that his seat is getting a little warm. Our defense isn't getting any younger, our OL can't stay healthy, our running game is non-existent and now our passing game is looking like a one-man show again.
Hopefully we'll right the ship this year and everyone can stay healthy. 5/6/2007 1:03:53 PM |

Quote : | "Carolina Panthers Work to do: Carolina massaged the draft beautifully. The Panthers traded back in the first round with the Jets to give themselves four picks between No. 25 and No. 83 overall, which they prudently used to select LB Jon Beason, WR Dwayne Jarrett, C Ryan Kalil and DE Charles Johnson. The only one of the four not filling a position of pressing need is Kalil, but he was a steal late in the second round.
The one position that Carolina came up short on was tight end, as it didn't address the need until the fifth round with Dante Rosario. In the team's defense, outside of Greg Olsen (Bears), there wasn't an available tight end worth drafting the remainder of Day 1. Scott Chandler and Martrez Milner would have been good values in the fourth round, where the Panthers selected WR/RS Ryne Robinson, but neither projects as a full-time starter in the next couple of years. One thing is certain: The Panthers are in desperate need of an upgrade to a position currently occupied by Michael Gaines, Jeff King and Rosario. " |

^^ yeah thats the spin the media is putting on it. Apparently they speak on behalf of the people so thats why Fox is on the hotseat. Richardson will have the final say in it though....

Thats the key to it all. It almost didnt matter how bad Jake was or who was catching the ball when we had Stephen Davis stuffing yards down opposing teams throats every weekend. Maybe this new Zone Blocking scheme will actually jump start our run game this year?5/7/2007 2:56:00 PM |
