I had a librarian at one school today tell me that when she was a teacher she had several complaints a year about the books she had the kids read. Two people complained about "The Devils Arithmetic", which if you do not know anything about it is a book on concentration camps in Nazi Germany and how the Germans seemingly picked the numbers of Jews to be executed at random. It had nothing to do with the devil but the title, but several parents complained. As a librarian she also gets complaints to pull books. On the forms they have to fill out to file a complaint, it clearly states "Have you read this book?" and "What exact sections of the material do you find offensive?" It never gets pass that.

That was so fucking bad it made my head spin.

Horrible adaptation, strayed drastically from the book, and basically just sucked all around.

They should have called it The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen 2.

I'm sooooo disappointed by how this movie turned out.

The only semi religious thing that was said was about 5 or 10 seconds from Ms Coulter and if you hadn't read the books it would make no sense.

The acting though. Was very very good. Dakota Blue Richards is a perfect Lyra and Kidman and Craig are awesome as well. Did anyone else pronounce Lyra as ( Leera) as opposed to (Lie-ra) when you read the books?

Also did anyone feel like this movie was pretty damn gruesome for PG 13? especially all the killing, even if it was softened up by the golden dust deaths of the daemons.

Haha and the ending song! barf.

I wish people would take that advice when it comes to the Bible.

I'm an active in my Christian faith and I can't wait to see the movie (I just don't see myself finding time to read the books given the the list of "To read:" is well past manageable already). I like movies and music that explore religion and faith, regardless of their angle or intent. Besides, I've never been too fond of "The Church" myself.

The first book doesn't have quite the level of religious undertones that the latter two do.

I completely missed the religious references in Golden Compass when I first read it. To be fair, I was like 12 at the time.

Nah, you had to pronounce it lie-ra, it's part of the whole series. Lyra "Silvertongue" and such: she's got a way with words that isn't necessarily truthful.

The very end of the first book, when I was talking to my girlfriend about it, was the first time I thought that it could be pronounce Lie-ra instead of Leer-ra as I had been reading it.

You know, I hate to be one of 'those' guys - you know, the offended literary fans of a book that gets put on the silver screen, but The Golden Compass was so bad that I nearly walked out of the theater. I read the book in anticipation of the movie because my wife is gaga about the trilogy, and found it a surprisingly complex and neat read. Definitely recommend it.

However the movie is a fucking mess! Plot all out of order, events happening totally different just so they can fit under a budget and in a certain time stamp for release....covering up elements of the story from the church, to the danger elements of the book. That's not even to mention the horrible cast and the 'fast food' feel to the story. Just UGH, not good. Those who have read the book but not seen the movie yet....caveat emptor...

And if you do go anyway, my god, try to hold your disgust at the ending sequence and what they did with it, and cover your ears up at the song in the end. It's one of the worst songs I've ever heard.

i enjoyed the movie, i was an avid reader of it back in the day. knowing the books vaguely helps you enjoy the movie a lot more in my opinion. the ending was horribly early though.

Just saw the movie and i didn't enjoy it at all (although I do want to read the series now since I'm without Harry Potter and this should suffice). Sam Elliot was the best part of the film. I demand more Sam. I didn't realize how few films he has actually been in.

His Dark Materials, as a whole has the anti-Christian theme. The Golden Compass does not get into it much because its simply setting up story.
