It's totally fine for this guy to get his panties in a wad about Chronicles of Narnia, but it's not cool for Christians to get their panties in a wad about his story?

^ He didn't like a book? This is the first time that's ever happened in the history of mankind?

I don't really care what kinds of Christians didn't like the series after reading it: it's the ones who are absolutely rejecting it without doing so (based on misinformed hype) who piss me off.

I had a librarian at one school today tell me that when she was a teacher she had several complaints a year about the books she had the kids read. Two people complained about "The Devils Arithmetic", which if you do not know anything about it is a book on concentration camps in Nazi Germany and how the Germans seemingly picked the numbers of Jews to be executed at random. It had nothing to do with the devil but the title, but several parents complained. As a librarian she also gets complaints to pull books. On the forms they have to fill out to file a complaint, it clearly states "Have you read this book?" and "What exact sections of the material do you find offensive?" It never gets pass that.

That was so fucking bad it made my head spin.

Horrible adaptation, strayed drastically from the book, and basically just sucked all around.

They should have called it The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen 2.

I think they tried to make the plot fit some sort of formula.

It didn't work.

I'm sooooo disappointed by how this movie turned out.

The only semi religious thing that was said was about 5 or 10 seconds from Ms Coulter and if you hadn't read the books it would make no sense.

The acting though. Was very very good. Dakota Blue Richards is a perfect Lyra and Kidman and Craig are awesome as well. Did anyone else pronounce Lyra as ( Leera) as opposed to (Lie-ra) when you read the books?

Also did anyone feel like this movie was pretty damn gruesome for PG 13? especially all the killing, even if it was softened up by the golden dust deaths of the daemons.

Haha and the ending song! barf.

I usually don't like Nicole Kidman, but I have to admit, she was well picked for this role.

I definitely pronounced it Lee-ra, not Lie-ra.

I wish people would take that advice when it comes to the Bible.

I'm an active in my Christian faith and I can't wait to see the movie (I just don't see myself finding time to read the books given the the list of "To read:" is well past manageable already). I like movies and music that explore religion and faith, regardless of their angle or intent. Besides, I've never been too fond of "The Church" myself.

Good movie.

The song playing during the credits was the worst thing I've ever heard.

The first book doesn't have quite the level of religious undertones that the latter two do.

I completely missed the religious references in Golden Compass when I first read it. To be fair, I was like 12 at the time.

From IMDB

Quote :
"Catholic Bishops Yank Positive Review of 'Compass'

Without explanation, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops has retracted on its website a positive review of The Golden Compass that appeared in Catholic newspapers last week. The review had appeared to counterbalance claims by the Catholic League, the nation's largest Catholic lay group, that it served as an introduction to atheism expounded in the trilogy of books on which the movie is based. The League had urged a boycott of the film. In an interview with the Baltimore Sun, Jim Lackey general news editor of the Catholic News Service, run by the bishops' conference, acknowledged that he was told to remove the review from the CNS website. "It's hard for me to categorize whether or not it was a surprise," he told the newspaper. Meanwhile, the church's Raleigh, NC diocese on Tuesday warned pastors in a letter about the possible ramifications of the film. "The concern is that once a child gets 'hooked' on the film or the books, then the next film could resort to the true atheistic nature of the books," the letter said. "

It's always nice to see NC get a shout out.

I thought the movie was lame. I don't even know why I went to see this movie. God, I hated this movie more than Harry Potter. The bear fight was lame.

Nah, you had to pronounce it lie-ra, it's part of the whole series. Lyra "Silvertongue" and such: she's got a way with words that isn't necessarily truthful.

The very end of the first book, when I was talking to my girlfriend about it, was the first time I thought that it could be pronounce Lie-ra instead of Leer-ra as I had been reading it.

You know, I hate to be one of 'those' guys - you know, the offended literary fans of a book that gets put on the silver screen, but The Golden Compass was so bad that I nearly walked out of the theater. I read the book in anticipation of the movie because my wife is gaga about the trilogy, and found it a surprisingly complex and neat read. Definitely recommend it.

However the movie is a fucking mess! Plot all out of order, events happening totally different just so they can fit under a budget and in a certain time stamp for release....covering up elements of the story from the church, to the danger elements of the book. That's not even to mention the horrible cast and the 'fast food' feel to the story. Just UGH, not good. Those who have read the book but not seen the movie yet....caveat emptor...

And if you do go anyway, my god, try to hold your disgust at the ending sequence and what they did with it, and cover your ears up at the song in the end. It's one of the worst songs I've ever heard.

How does one knock a bear's lower jaw off with no blood flying everywhere?

I started yelling at the screen when the movie ended, and I stayed until after the credits hoping there would be extra stuff that would off-set the horrible ending.

well, there's a difference between showing a little blood for a wound and a spewing geyser like Kill Bill when she cut people's arms, legs, and heads off.

FROM RT:
Quote :
"Attention, filmgoers who have seen and enjoyed The Golden Compass: According to The Vatican, you're either "dishonest" or you haven't been "gifted with a critical spirit."

Such is the underlying message to be taken from a long (and rather smug) editorial in Wednesday's edition of l'Osservatore Romano, the official Vatican daily. Calling Compass' underwhelming box-office performance "consoling," the paper dismisses Chris Weitz's adaptation of Philip Pullman's book as the "most anti-Christmas film possible" before speculating that the movie's $26 million domestic opening might spell doom for the remainder of the planned trilogy. "If that should happen," says the editorial, "it wouldn't be a big loss."

And if you actually enjoyed the movie, what's wrong with you? That's what the paper wants to know. You should have found it "devoid of any particular emotion apart from a great chill," because "in Pullman's world, hope simply does not exist, because there is no salvation but only personal, individualistic capacity to control the situation and dominate events."

So there, New Line, Philip Pullman, and Chris Weitz. The Catholic Church showed you. And just wait until you read what they have to say about Angels & Demons! (We have to ask, though -- where was the Vatican's film critic when we were having our holiday spirits crushed by Deck the Halls and/or Christmas with the Kranks? Talk about your most anti-Christmas films possible...)
"

Oh Vatican, you so crazy!

Just saw the movie and i didn't enjoy it at all (although I do want to read the series now since I'm without Harry Potter and this should suffice). Sam Elliot was the best part of the film. I demand more Sam. I didn't realize how few films he has actually been in.

His Dark Materials, as a whole has the anti-Christian theme. The Golden Compass does not get into it much because its simply setting up story.
