One of the saddest thing you will ever read:

One widow and three forced marriages
Layla, a 42-year-old Afghan woman, recounts the impact of being married three times against her wishes.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/south_asia/6756383.stm

Just shows the shitheads that exist in that country and in other bullshit countries like that, alot of them Muslim/Arab countries. Wish I could gun down all people like that.

Here is something else, showing the position of women in Afghanistan today:

Women under siege in Afghanistan
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/south_asia/6755799.stm

Quote :
"For the past three months, Afghan female MP Shukria Barakzai has been receiving a letter saying she may be targeted by a suicide bomber in the next six months.

The cryptic government letter contains an intelligence warning that Ms Barakzai's life is under threat and she should be careful. She is one of six MPs getting such a letter these days.

"That is all that the government does - send a letter by mail once every month saying my life is under threat. There isn't talk of even providing security," says the feisty parliamentarian and mother of three daughters."

And this is very interesting for those who care:

Afghan villagers answer your questions
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/south_asia/6763865.stm

Quote :
"Nearly two years ago, BBC News website readers put their questions to people in a village north of the capital, Kabul, where the Taleban had destroyed many homes during the civil war.

Since we met the villagers in September 2005, international aid pledges to the country have risen to more than $10.5bn (£5.9bn). But corruption has got worse, and the Taleban have been fighting back.

Our reporter Soutik Biswas revisited the village of Asad Khyl to find out how life has changed during the last two years. Here, villagers answer questions sent to them by readers. "

Click to read the answers given by ordinary Afghanis to questions about their daily lives asked by BBC readers.

Some more:

Afghan village struggles against odds

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/south_asia/6763865.stm

Quote :
"The BBC's Soutik Biswas returns to an Afghan village, after visiting it in 2005 to link its residents with BBC News website readers from around the world. What has changed nearly two years on? "

Afghan opium production 'soars'

Quote :
"Opium production in Afghanistan is soaring out of control, the annual UN report on illegal drugs says.

The World Drug Report says more than 90% of illegal opium, which is used to make heroin, comes from Afghanistan.
.
.
"The province of Helmand itself is around 70,000 hectares under cultivation, which is three times the total area under cultivation in Myanmar (Burma).

"So only one province, three times as important as the whole of Myanmar, the second-largest opium-producing country," Mr Pietschmann says. "

Still a shit hole

http://www.bbc.com/news/magazine-33810338

The way she was killed is so horrific, not by extremists or terrorists, but by normal 'modern' people wearing jeans and t-shirts.

Reinforces my view that the only way to change that country is to kill all males over the age of 15 overnight. Not saying that should be done or is the right thing to do.

I did a quick review of this thread. You should read just about anything written by David Kilcullen. He'll give you some insights into counterinsurgency that you haven't thought of.

(scroll down to the books section, I recommend Blood Year, and Out of the Mountains)
