i need to mention life in your way, as well. great band.

and to go in a more mellow, indie, or singer-songwriter direction, i must mention:

pedro the lion
cool hand luke
john mark mcmillan
dear ephesus (first cd i ever bought and still one my favorite of all time. strangely they never got remotely famous, not even in the christian music circle)
enter the worship circle
ross king
tara leigh cobble
derek webb
who can forget jars of clay? flood ftw!
mark mathis
arthur alligood
paulette wooten
and bleach has got some good albums
jason upton (he and the musicians he tours with are all amazing. about half the set is improv)

some of these are explicitly Christian, like worship music (ie they say "Jesus" a lot), so that may turn some people off, but they still make great music

Just saw Building 429 in concert tonight.

Next weekend I'm going to see Newsboys and Jeremy Camp. And Hawk Nelson is also going to be there, but they suck balls.

^never really got into many of those bands' music. but i respect jeremy camp. hes been through a lot and has quite a testimony.

and newsboys, well they've been around forever and actually have some decent music out. especially their remixes.

I generally despise most "contemporary" christian music. it reminds me of being forced to go to this stupid baptist church camp when i was 12.

and i hated this band in particular (Stryper)

but this recent live version is pretty fucking awesome. im amazed at how good they actually are.

worth watching, imo

I think the most annoying thing to be about christian music is how shitty bands can become popular just because they're in the christian niche. This is not nearly as bad as it was 10 years ago. Any no-talent ass clown could put out an album with christian lyrics and it would sell because, hey, it's not secular and evil like the rest of that stuff! Now I think the industry has matured a little bit, but there's still less talent in christian rock than would be on the general airwaves because it's an artificial market. When your music selection is only what you can buy at your local Lifeway store, there's bound be more duds.

That being said, has anyone mentioned U2? One of the most influential rock bands of our day, and there have always been christian themes in their lyrics.

I don't know if anberlin was mentioned, but "Cities" is an incredibly good album. Their drummer is FTW.

Last Saturday I saw Family Force 5, Kutless, Jars of Clay, Jeremy Camp, and Newsboys at Sonfest at Carowinds.

Twas awesome. Newsboys drummer is incredible, and their lead singer is pretty good at drumming himself. A small drumset popped out in the middle of the audience and they had a drum solo duel.

if youre saying total then yes sure because its a smaller market. but once again there is a big difference between the 'artificial' side and the not that people still have a hard time separating.

not actually true. I mean some of the more generic and sucky praise and worship groups might only sing about one thing, but most of the good bands cover a variety of topics. Most of them may deal with religion, but the focus is not always on how much they love Jesus, like "Faith + 1" on South Park, which I feel was a great parody.

^well said. there are actually a ton of different topics..just approaching them from different angles perhaps. and yes the southpark parody was great

lead singer is badass. and 'Who Am I' is one of my favorite songs, regardless of genre.

Leeland has some pretty good stuff. Their singer's voice is amazing, and he sounds as good live as he does on the CD. Saw them at the Harvest Crusade this year.

I've probably been to 50 or more Christian concerts/festivals, compared to around 15 non Christian concerts (not counting things like fiddlers conventions).
