i'd like to see this research considering players like A-Rod and Reyes never went to college6/7/2007 1:01:14 PM |

It makes sense. College players are more fully developed and there is a higher % rate that they will be successful in the majors since they generally start out in A+ or AA ball. Kids out of high school are so far from fully developed that they are much more likely to a) get hurt; b) not live up to natural talent; and c) not physically develop as thought. Plus most high school draft picks start out in Rookie ball or A-.
The Latin America kids like Reyes sign as free agents through baseball academies a lot of the time. Reyes actually had a higher bid from the Cubs but chose the Mets because Omar Minaya was a scout at the time...

take all the players in the majors that could have gone to college vs high school players and you will see that most of them went and played in college. If you take high school players most of the time they have to be developed in the minor leauge system also thats if they sign. Some high school kids go to college to improve there draft status. 6/7/2007 1:28:43 PM |

^yeah i guess thats what i was getting at...since the MLB has such a vast minor league program with multilple levels, it seems that you could get just as prepared as playing college ball
Plus in minor league baseball, they actually use wooden bats and often can play against MLB competition down in AA or AAA to rehab an injury 6/7/2007 2:04:37 PM |

You knew the only team that would want to deal with Boras would be the Yankees. You just knew.

That would be irrelevant to me, I'd want the guaranteed money.
Baseball players dont pan out at a very high percentage, so I'd take the $2-$3 million so Id be set for life rather than banking on a combination of luck, skill, and serious durability needed to get a huge major league contract ~10 years down the line (3-4 years of college, ~2-3 years of minor leagues, ~3-5 years to get a big deal)

The shitty thing is he would have been the Mets pick at 29 based on what they've done in the past if they didn't lose the pick to the Giants for Alou...
V they actually have a better system now. Top 10 almost. Steinbrenner is too senile to demand trading 5 top prospects for old fucks so the baseball guys are making most of the decisions again.

one interesting quote to think "what might have been"

^ We're talking about Scott Boras (his agent) here -- this character would bust out Brackman's backup plan to be an astronaut if it garnered an extra five bucks 8/16/2007 8:16:28 AM |
