Thanks for the bump!
Started playing last night in the beta with SandSanta.
Anyone else in the beta? I know Azaka just got his beta key.
The space flight is epic and fun. Its like Eve space flight but better. The few quests i did are fun and some what original. For example, one quest requires you to rescue a crew from a damaged ship...well first you have to navigate to that sector of space, then fight off the pirates around it, then beam your ground crew (and self) aboard the ship and fight the pirates that boarded, put out fires/plasma leaks before you can safely reach the crew...and then safely beam them back aboard your ship, etc....
...being space based and all you don't have to fly to the quest giver to turn in quests either...you can just hail starfleet.
The ship customization is fun as well...and you can spend hours on that alone.

So is this just like EvE? all spaceship? or do you get to beam down to planets and shit? 1/15/2010 4:55:09 PM |
Golovko All American 27023 Posts user info edit post |
^its Spaceship + ground combat. so basically some quests require you to fly to some planet, beam down, and then its like WoW. When you beam back to your ship its like Eve but fun.
The space battles alone are worth it. If you're getting hit from the front, in real-time, you can divert more power to your front shields. You can also divert power between speed, weapons, shields depending on what kind of fight you're in. Its a very in depth game that requires some thinking. Not like WoW where you just do what the guy yelling in your head set is telling you to do and mash two buttons.
You also can have multiple ships. Some ships you can only access with a certain rank. There are 60 levels in all. 6 ranks, each rank has 10 grades. Admiral grade 10 being the highest.
Also the party system is awesome. If you're solo and doing a quest but someone just beat you to said quest item, it will automatically join you two into a party and give you both credit for the mission. You can disable this feature of course. For example, I was about to do an escort mission where I had to tow a disabled ship to a local mine outpost...but some kid got there a second before i did, so it added me to his group automatically and i just had to protect him in case we ran into trouble.
The graphics are amazing too. Unfortunately I can't run on the highest settings or my macbook pro lags like crazy. But even on medium it looks sweet.

I'm signed up for open beta but for some reason when I run the game every thing is dark and I can't see anything. I sent something to Cryptic about it and am waiting for a response. 1/15/2010 6:28:20 PM |

If I'm looking at the right thing I have a Mobile Intel(R) GMA X3100. The thing is it worked before all the way through character creation but froze everytime the game started.
I tried updating all my drivers and now even the character screen is blacked out but I can launch the game now. I'm not too computer savvy so any suggestions are welcome. 1/15/2010 6:42:36 PM |

you have integrated graphics which means you're not going to be able to play too many new games at any sort of good detail 1/15/2010 7:43:15 PM |

Do not judge this game from the tutorial missions. I was just about to throw in the towel until I actually got past the tutorial into the real game and its awesome! Which is about the first hour or so. 1/16/2010 12:45:53 AM |

The server has been at full capacity all day. Not sure if that's a good sign or a bad sign during an open beta test. It's really igniting the forums. Some people blame Cryptic for giving out more keys than their servers could realistically handle. Others are afraid that when the game finally goes live, the problem will be even worse.
Of those of you who have done beta testing before, is this common? There have been a lot of problems but I just chalk that up to the fact that it is still beta testing. Still with the launch date not far away, maybe some of these fears have some merit. 1/16/2010 4:51:40 PM |

Beta tests are not just designed for the software alone. Server infrastructure is also tested during that time for a game like this. It may be intentional and it may not
the good news is that if it is unintentional then there is a good chance it can be fixed before launch 1/16/2010 5:27:50 PM |

Looked into the beta, its full price. Im playing eve right now, and quite happy paying 15/mth vs 60+monthly. 1/17/2010 9:37:03 PM |

what does this mean?
also..
$50 = game + first month free. then monthly like every MMO.1/17/2010 9:39:02 PM |

if i only had a extra 4 - 6 hours every day.... work 8/9 sleep 7/9 with incidentals taking 2 on average leaving another 10 for exercise, recreation and down time would be ideal... (rather than 4 as it is now) 1/19/2010 12:45:31 PM |

^^^^ Betas should not be demos. Betas should be oh here find bugs for us in real world conditions.
Eve doesnt cost shit to start playing, only its monthly. Id love to get in this, but theres plenty of $50 games I can buy that I know Ill like that dont have monthly fees. And when I looked, it was 60.
Full servers = bad news 2/15/2010 12:23:24 PM |

Yea but Eve also suffers from being more boring then taking a shit.
Mine space rocks and and train in real life time so that you can spend 10 mins starring at a screen saver consisting of space battle images.
Also, double LOL if you're an eve goon. 2/15/2010 2:43:24 PM |

this game got terrible reviews but I guess the question is how much you can patch the game, everyone seems to say the ground combat needs a lot of changes 3/25/2010 10:07:06 PM |

it could use some work, yeah. most of the issues involve a lack of creativity with random mission generation. they need to find some more interesting things to do when you're on the ground. shooting up aliens and scanning for artifacts can get old after a while. 3/25/2010 10:13:53 PM |
