this is obviously a joke. but it does amaze me how all of you hate myrtle beach but everytime I go there the town is flooded with 300,000 tourists.....I guess all of those people are just stupid. You can't actually have fun at Myrtle Beach.

but no it isn't even the best beach in SC.....but there is LOTS todo, for all ages. great restaurants, golf courses, amusement parks, obviously Putt Putt and go carts...there is something to be said for the nightlife......

The reason there are so many Wings and Eagles is because people buy shit from there.....so it can't be that stupid...

Ok I'm done defending that place.

This is just how everyone hates Nickelback, but they sell 10 million cds...weird

haha...i think somewhere in myrtle there is an intersection that has an eagles, pacific, wings, and bargain beachwear on each corner, it is definitely a redneck hangout.

Myrtle Beach definitely has its trashy areas, especially around the old pavilion, but I still have a blast and continue to go back multiple times a year. If you don't have a good time at Myrtle its probably because you haven't been very much and don't know where to go.

Whatever study group made that list must be the same study group that listed Garringer High School and East Meck as a TOP American Public School

I guess Myrtle Beach would be number 1 for....

Trailor Trash & Rednecks
Fat women in bikini's
Trailor Parks
Black Motorcyclists
Slutty 15 year olds smoking and getting pregnant
High School Spring Break
Buying Fireworks

There is no fucking way you can even compare Myrtle Beach to Key West, Hawaii, or Sydney AUS

I think you guys all have the topic here twisted. This is a ranking of the best "beach cities" and not the actual sand and water itself. Sure the outerbanks have beautiful nature but people are looking for more than camping on their vacation and don't want to bore their kids to death either. Myrtle is the entertainment, lodging and dining beach capital of the world and literally has constant nice places to stay, eat and play that go on for miles and miles. I could eat for seven years eating a breakfast lunch and dinner at a different restaurant in Myrtle beach while at Ocracoke I would miss dinner on the first day. Many of the people in the college messageboard demographic are going to hate anything popular because its popular. You are the unique different indivudalists of the world but I still expect you to appreciate Myrtle for what it is, a tourist destination. Not a wildlife reserve, not an exotic romantic getaway not an artsy diamond in the rough or anything else you were expecting. The hotels and restaurants in the list on that site are only the ones featured on yahoo and not a ranking of all in myrtle beach (not even close as an expert talking). And yes the site is legit. Its yahoo and they always use advertising related to whats #1 in a ranking. Many of you need to take a week and give the place a chance to grow on you. You'll probably love it although this is the down year. Hard rock park opens next year.

"Birthplace of Wheel of Fortune star Vanna White, MYRTLE BEACH is a brazen splurge of seaside fun, an unmitigated stretch of commercial development twenty miles down the coast from the North Carolina border at the center of the sixty-mile "Grand Strand." Predominantly a family resort, it's packed fit to burst during mid-term vacations with leering, jeering students in fluorescent beachwear – if you've seen the movie Shag, you'll know what to expect. Fans of crazy golf, water parks, factory outlet malls, funfairs and parasailing will be in heaven, and the beach itself isn't bad. The widest stretch is at North Myrtle Beach, a chain of small communities among which Ocean Drive is the center.

South of Myrtle Beach lie Murells Inlet, a fishing port with lots of good fish restaurants, and Pawleys Island, a secluded resort once favored by plantation-owners and today retaining a far slower pace than its neighbors. Between the two on Hwy-17 is the beautifully landscaped Brookgreen Gardens (summer daily 9.30am–9.30pm; rest of the year 9.30am–5pm; $8.50; tel 1-800/849-1931), a former rice and indigo plantation with an outdoor display of American figurative sculpture, and the setting for many of Julia Peterkin's novels of gullah life. There's also a wildlife sanctuary, where you're likely to spot alligator and deer, and an hour-and-a-half boat tour around the area."

No, I'm pretty sure it says "World's Best Beaches", not "World's Best Beach Cities". Even if that were the case, there's no way Myrtle would make "World's Best Beach Cities", much less be number one. How could you possibly compare Myrtle Beach with Sydney Australia? Or Santa Cruz? Even Wilmington is a nicer city than Myrtle Beach.

even if it is "Best Beach Cities" my post still stands. There is no way in hell you could convince me that Myrtle Beach is a better beach city then say Key West, or even Charleston.

About the only thing Myrtle Beach could win is...

I wasn't aware that charleston wasn't the same type of city as wilmington. Port cities and beach cities aren't the same. Charleston is a major city while myrtle is 100% beach and tourism. Theres not much to do in either of those cities except historical things which aren't really "entertainment". Key west is isolated and doesn't have much at all in terms of development compared to the grand strand. Shows, clubs, amusement parks, everything is at myrtle and a whole lot of everything too. If orlando was a beach it would be #1 and myrtle is like a mini orlando THATS ALSO A BEACH.

LOL, myrtle beach is like orlando how? amusements and stuff to eat?

it's certainly not the commerce or the clientele, because if you factor that in, myrtle beach is more like the north carolina state fair than orlando.

sure there is, but other than historical things (which myrtle has none of (-)) those placess have nothing on myrtle and they aren't beaches they are coastal cities.

Charleston is not the beach. Folly beach is the beach, sullivans island, carolina, kure and writghtsville beach. Even though they don't have anything to do this is silly and just like comparing new york city to myrtle beach. Orlando is full of entertainment, dinner shows, performing arts, amusement parks, world class resorts, too many restaurants and all type of light entertainment businesses like mini-golf, haunted houses and things for kids to go along with an infinate number of night clubs, bars etc. Myrtle beach has a lower magnitude of all that stuff than orlando but it has the strip. The myrtle beach strip is its on monster by itself. Thousands of cars and pedestrians lineup evernight for the chance to stroll down the strip to either showcase what they've got, or just see what everyone else is doing.

Then they also have that thing with white sand and large surf which is no outer banks or hawaii but lets keep perspective, it is some of the best beachline in the country.

I mean seriously the only people I know who like Myrtle beach are 17 or 18 and go there for high school spring break or as a poor college persons spring break. It really is a cheap fucking dump.

Virginia beach has a few nice resorts but most of them are really old and there still aren't nearly as many as myrtle. There is not nearly as much entertainment and it is all limited to one small area. The typical areas in virginia beach have outgrown the tourist area and the city is probably about <20% tourist area. Myrtle is >90. Even the tourist area of virginia beach is just not as booming and doesn't have as much money being invested in it as myrtle. VB is more on the lines to be compared to ocean city instead of Myrtle. Both are nice but they are nowhere near myrtle. This is why droves of northerners PASS virginia beach on the way to Myrtle. Also the investment money poured into myrtle beach only BECAUSE it was a very nice beach even when it was a quiet town.

To give a little more perspective there is one small stretch of myrtle thats an area of about 20 straight (yes consecutive) highrise high class resorts/condo buildings (open or under construction) that is more than virginia and north carolinas entire coastline combined and that stretch is ~1 mile long and doesn't even account for half of these type of places in Myrtle. I'm also pretty sure its amongst the worlds leaders (if not the leader) of concentration of businesses within a block of the ocean for a tourist city.

[Edited on June 7, 2007 at 1:09 AM. Reason : roughly a mile]

[Edited on June 7, 2007 at 1:13 AM. Reason : Myrtle has so much that all this time I EASILY forgot the key 2 its a golf and shopping MECCA]

how is the #1 beach in the "world" something as crowded as myrtle? are they just basing this list off of economies or something? seems like they'd base it more on white sand, bluegreen water, etc...i guess this isnt a list of "best island hotspots"

haha i can't believe someone is actually arguing FOR it. I'm sorry but i admit i've been there and it's probably the most degrading horrible experience walking down the strip. It's ugly, materialistic and just plain trash. Beaches in Austrailia and even Hawaii make myrtle beach look like a landfill. I mean come on, the word "beach" implies dunes, and the idiotic developers who just care about money destroyed pretty much everything natural about the beach. A true "beach city" preserves the dunes, preserves the wildlife, and THEN creates attractions that are based on a uniquely location based culture, not some shitty chains that you can find anywhere.

Thing is, Myrtle has white sand, bluegreen water, small dunes and dune conservation methods and it isn't all about being the most beautiful beach. Its about being the best vacation area which is a combination of the beach and things to do around it. It also has a nice blend of unique businesses not just chains but lets face it chains are going to be in places that are great places and will bring people. Chains are capitalism at work. Chains are put up on a demand and supply basis. If people weren't coming in droves to Myrtle there wouldn't be two dozen krispy kreme perkins and applebees setup.

Just because there is a shitload of chains doesn't mean there are no unique places. Its just that many people like to eat at a proven place instead of taking chances on something new. Lol I bet the number of privately owned restaurants in the myrtle beach area also rivals the total amount on the entire nc coastline. I have no idea whats going on in Australia but I know hawaii doesn't compare from an entertainment standpoint.

Quote :

If something is anywhere close to being the best in the world, everyone is going to want it. A better question would be how could a #1 beach in the world NOT be very crowded?

it just seems most of the things that you are arguing for as positives are economic...the list isnt worlds best vacation areas, just the worlds best beach

and it does NOT have the white CaCO3 sand and bluegreen waters that i'm talking about...i'm talking about something like this

Well fine sir our definitions of "fun" and "entertainment" vary completely. Don't get me wrong i love going out to bars and drinking and seeing shows. But seriously if i wanted to go to a beach and enjoy myself i want to go someplace completely natural, someplace i can sit out an enjoy the waves, listen to the birds and wind through the forest, and truly relax. And then maybe go grab a beer at a local bar a walks distance through the woods. Too bad developers have destroyed the dunes, killed all the birds, damped out the sound of the waves with nearby highways, and cut down all the trees to put up cheap highrise hotels to maximize income.

And i don't give a shit about how many "privately owned places" there are in mrytle beach. I would rather sit down for a quiet dinner with friends at a local joint and try something new, then go to any place in myrtle beach no matter who owns it.

I'm sorry I have to say it but in my opinion Myrtle beach is for low class, un-cultured people who want franchised cheap shit, and want to get drunk and forget what happens. Also for people who have no respect whatsoever for any type of natural "beach" or pretty much any respect for life in general. I probably wouldn't enjoy the company of most of the people who go to myrtle beach regularly just because, well they go to myrtle beach.

Finally myrtle beach is for people who just haven't found anything better because they don't care to, and think the late night mcdonalds menu is the saving grace of the planet.

maybe were just spoiled since we live only a few hours from a ton of great beaches and myrtle seems to get a bunch of tourists from either someplace cold in the northeast or someplace landlocked

the closest most people stay to myrtle beach that i know of (people from around here) go to north myrtle or cherry grove which arent as bad
