Dogs are like people. Like my grandpa smoked everyday til he was 90 and didn't get cancer. My uncle didn't smoke at all and his wife did and he got cancer. I think it's a lot of genetics and bad luck. But it doesn't hurt to do as much as possible, like feeding a good food to your dog, just to make sure you take out any risk factors you have control over.

Besides, it's just cheap to not get at least a decent food, not necessarily premium. If your not willing to spend a few extra dollars on dog food, you probably shouldn't have a dog.

My dogs get a premium, holistic food from Solid Gold - what I'm feeding them is completely wheat/wheat germ free:

Barking at the Moon, High protein, low carbohydrate dog food

Guaranteed Analysis:
Crude Protein, min 42%
Crude Fat, min 20%
Crude Fiber, max 4%
Moisture, max 10%

465 kcal / cup

Ingredients Salmon Meal | Beef | Potatoes | Potato Protein | Canola Oil | Tomato Pomace | Natural Flavor | Salmon Oil | Choline Chloride | Taurine | Dried Chicory Root | Parsley Flakes | Pumpkin Meal | Almond Oil | Sesame Oil | Yucca Schidigera Extract | Thyme | Blueberries | Cranberries | Carrots | Broccoli | Vitamin E Supplement | Iron Proteinate | Zinc Proteinate | Copper Proteinate | Ferrous Sulfate | Zinc Sulfate | Copper Sulfate | Potassium Iodide | Thiamine Mononitrate | Manganese Proteinate | Manganous Oxide | Ascorbic Acid | Vitamin A Supplement | Biotin | Calcium Panthothenate | Manganese Sulfate | Sodium Selenite | Pyridoxine Hydrochloride | Vitamin B12 Supplement | Riboflavin | Vitamin D Supplement | Folic Acid

They both have sensitive stomachs, but since feeding this product, or any Solid Gold Product, they've not had upset stomachs, their coats have changed incredibly (hardly any dander, nice shine and color) and they don't eat as much because their bodies are able to absorb much more of the food. They also have more solid, smaller bowel movements.
