^^ fair enough, but there are countries which do not provide any care unless you prove you can pay first. I think offering emergency care w/o proof of payment is quite generous, but I would rather not go beyond that because I would like to see the government mind its own buisness and not have too much of a say in my healthcare. 6/16/2007 6:00:59 PM |

1. There's a lot of fun paperwork for living in Canada. 2. Specialties like dentistry aren't covered in the Medicare system, so they still have private health care prices
People keep looking to countries like Cuba to see how socialist health care has fucked up: well look at Scandinavian health care instead. Honestly, we could take a few lessons from the Finns and Swedes on how to create successful public health care systems.6/17/2007 12:36:59 AM |

the Swedish health care system isn't all that spectacular. i know a girl who accidentally cut herself while cooking and spent something like 7 hours waiting in the emergency room queue. also, you can only buy drugs (even OTC medicines like tylenol) in state-run pharmacies.
not to mention the taxes are super high in Sweden. 6/17/2007 12:48:52 AM |
StillFuchsia All American 18941 Posts user info edit post |
^ Well yeah, you have to get the money from somewhere. I don't see higher taxes as such a terrible thing if it'd help more people be able to afford health care. I guess Americans are too cheap to help each other out on that.
Also, she cut herself cooking? Call me crazy, but that doesn't sound like a serious injury. 6/17/2007 12:52:29 AM |

and therein lies the problem. People dont want to pay more taxes, but they want the government to spend more money. Obviously there are places where we are spending money that could be better spent elsewhere but even so, expect higher taxes with more government regulated benefits.6/17/2007 4:01:07 AM |

He never claimed to want the government to spend more money.
Certainly, there is a lot wrong with our healthcare system, but putting it on the government to provide healthcare is not the answer. I think the VA healthcare system is proof of that.
And then there's the false belief that healthcare is a right, which is just more evidence that americans have a delusion-ally overdeveloped sense of entitlement. 6/19/2007 6:41:22 AM |

Of course I don't want the government to spend more money. I'd like to see us get rid of medicaid and medicare while we're at it. The only people I think our government should have to be responsible for is medical coverage of wounded veterans, and we seem to be doing a really half-ass job of that at times. 6/19/2007 8:41:22 AM |

yeah, but you would still be paying in full for any kind of doctor visit or prescription for a few years, but I guess it might be better than nothing at all
Recently, I was denied a general checkup at a new doctor for me because I didn't have health insurance because I just graduated and was removed from my parents' insurance. I offered to pay cash and they still denied me. I later found out that that is against the hippocratic oath and they could be reported. In sum, I'd like to say that I am disappointed in our health care system and insurance companies and will probably see this movie.6/27/2007 10:31:35 PM |

Just got done seeing it - definitely the most revealing Michael Moore film to date. I was a huge fan of Bowling for Columbine but thought Fahrenheit 9/11 was too preachy. This tops both.
Just remember to show up early tomorrow as we'll be swamped all day. And I'd advise coming early for the night shows.

June 18, 2007 | Issue 43•25
WASHINGTON, DC—Though the film isn't scheduled for release until June 29, a New York Times/CBS News poll found that nearly half the nation believes Michael Moore's new health care documentary Sicko is "unpatriotic," "disgusting," and "ill-informed."
"This film is absolutely tasteless and misguided, and I can't believe theaters are even showing it," said GOP presidential candidate Sen. Sam Brownback (R-KS), who, along with the rest of the nation, has not yet seen the film. "I thought the role of a documentary filmmaker was to be objective, but moviegoers are going to leave the theater thinking that there is something wrong with some part of the United States, and that is just flat-out untrue."
The other half of the nation has praised Sicko, calling it a "real eye-opener" that would "challenge people's preconceived notions."" |
