yeah, i dont get the conservative fanboys and their talking shouting head pundits.
the fan dedication is like NASCAR, except instead of having a favorite race car driver, they have their favorite shrill, frothy, blood vessel-popping political windbags.
i mean, i can appreciate Franken's wit -- in small doses -- but I'd be damned if i'm going to listen to him or any other pundit, day in and day out. (actually i never listened to that show even once) I dont watch or listen to any one person's opinion on a regular basis. the closest i come is to reading various syndicated columnists in the local papers, and that's just because they're always laying around.
but even then, its only once or twice a week at most, and i skip a lot since i dont subscribe. and hell, i even read Bill O'Reilly's column since its carried by the conservative suburban daily where I happen to work.
i dont subscribe to any blogs or read any of them with any regularity. I just hit the various local/national/international news sites and try to cover a broad yet reasonable perspective. most people i know are the same way.

I think the case is legally sound, and even morally by fairness standards. However that being sad, today's culture of calling people names and shouting down logically sound arguements are the norm.
Should the public airwaves show political fairness? Yes. Will it happen? No. 6/28/2007 8:22:47 PM |

Looks like many politicians on both sides are going to be hoppin' mad at talk-radio after the failed attempt to ram that amnesty bill through.
From my understanding, the president can replace just one conservative FCC member with a liberal, and they can bring back the fairness doctrine with a wave of the bureaucratic pen. It would take Congress to reverse the FCC.
Funny how it's just talk radio that requires fairness. The main-stream liberal TV, magazine and newspaper media must already be fair. 6/28/2007 10:00:59 PM |

the problem is not particular opinions or bias.
the problem is mass ownership of local media by a single corporate conglomerate. 6/28/2007 11:19:58 PM |

you've said that like 18 times, man. we get the point that monopolistic tendencies in the media, at best, don't help things. That still doesn't change the fact that gov't intervention would make things even worse (especially given that that would kind of force even more of a monopolistic effect, making everyone effectively put out the same product) 6/29/2007 12:59:38 AM |

If you can provide me with one example of a single corp. conglomerate that owns all of the media outlets in a city, I would be pretty astonished.
Clearly, it just can't be done. Media firms can get large market shares, but not monopolies. There are simply too many alternatives today for information.
The FCC should abolish ownership rules and let the free market work. Nervous socialists will still have anti-trust laws to fall back on if Disney takes over the media world.6/29/2007 1:25:23 AM |

And broadcasting has changed so much since 1949. I cannot believe the liberals--and a few so-called conservatives--that are trying to bring this monster back to life.
But the House voted today to deny funding for the Fairness Doctrine. So, I hope this bullshit would-be revival goes away. 6/29/2007 2:12:19 AM |

how, please tell, is this a "benefit" to the free market? where does the free exchange of new ideas and creative expressions find a place in this generic formulaic templating of broadcast communication
Clear Channel, you may also recall, is a fan of censoring political dialogue and blacklisting persons whom they find offensive.
remember the Dixie Chicks? Clear Channel Banned their songs from being played on ALL OF THE ABOVE 1,200+ STATIONS after daring to criticise the President.

So we agree that no conglomerate has a media monopoly. Your problem is that one company owns "too many" stations in one market.
But the key is that they don't own all the stations. They still have to compete.
In the Raleigh radio market you have the following ownership
Commercial Broadcasters: Entercom: 6 stations Clear Channel: 5 stations Capital: 2 stations Radio One: 5 stations Curtis Media: 15 stations St. Augustine College: 1 station
NonCommercial Broadcasters: WCPE UNC Duke NCCU Shaw NCSU
Each company uses a variety of formats that listeners want to hear. Curtis Media, because of it's size is able to do niche formats such as all-spanish and black gospel.
There are more choices from more sources in media today than ever before. TOns more radio statons than in the past. And about 40% of listeners of Internet radio accessed stations from outside their local market.
There is no evidence that smaller ownership always leads to better standards or content.
In the 1970s, on a typical weekday evening, the three networks were watched by about 56% of all households with televisions. By 2003, on a typical evening those networks had a combined 20% rating.
And if we are worried about content monopoly, the second largest common broadcasting network in the country with over 700 stations is the gov't's NPR.6/29/2007 10:23:23 AM |

NAB Applauds House Action Banning Fairness Doctrine Funding
Quote : | "WASHINGTON, DC - By a vote of 309-115, the U.S. House of Representatives today adopted an amendment offered by Rep. Mike Pence (R-IN) to the Financial Services and General Government Bill. The amendment bars the FCC from using federal funds to reinstate the so-called 'Fairness Doctrine.'
This regulation stemmed from the 1940s, and required broadcasters to air contrasting viewpoints on controversial issues of public importance. It was eliminated in 1987 after the FCC found it had a 'chilling effect' on free speech.
In a letter sent to every House office this morning, NAB [National Association of Broadcasters] Executive Vice President of Government Relations Doug Wiley urged lawmakers to oppose reinstatement of the so-called Fairness Doctrine. 'Bringing back the Fairness Doctrine is unnecessary, unwarranted, and unconstitutional,' wrote Wiley.
Commenting on today’s House action, NAB Executive Vice President Dennis Wharton said, 'Complementing the absolute explosion in alternative media outlets since the Fairness Doctrine was eliminated, broadcast viewers and listeners today enjoy a rich diversity of viewpoints from all sides of the political spectrum. We salute House members who today stood with our nation’s Founding Fathers and embraced a robust press that is free and unfettered from government interference.'" |
