this brought back some bad memories and got me thinking:

Quote :
"Think of how different this story could have gone.

Instead of having her get in the car and drive off, say he ended up throwing her to the ground to the keys from her. When she goes down she cracks her head open and ends up going to the hospital. Other party goers say they saw the guy throw her to the ground. Guy ends up in prison for X years for domestic assault or the like."

if he really had been successful in stopping her, he definitely could have been brought up on charges of assault or "false imprisonment". and that really kills me.

people sometimes do stupid things, and you might call me sexist, but in my experience and observations, women are more likely to do rash things like this. anyway, doesn't matter who is more likely.

my point is, so when someone is bent on doing something stupid like this that could get them arrested, or worse, could injure them or others, and someone concerned tries to stop them, what options do they have?

if you use some force to incpacitate them, that's assault. if you restrain them physically without hurting them, or lock them in a room or house, that's false imprisonment. so what to do?

at watauga hall at ncsu (2002), i had a verbal fight with my then gf. she was visibly inflamed and angry. she said she was gonna leave and started to leave with her car keys. i restrained her and said i would never let her drive in that mental state as it can be as incapacitating as some drugs. i mean, i was REALLY afraid she would get in an accident and hurt herself or others. she was so upset mentally she wasn't acting herself. heck, she even said something like "i hope i get in an accident and die." HOW could i let her go after she said that??? so i sat on the bed and forced her to sit on the bed next to me with my arms around her. she said she would call campus police if i didn't let her go. i called her bluff, and she took my phone which was on the floor next to the bed, and dialled. i was shocked beyond belief, and i didn't even stop her from calling. she told them i was stopping her from leaving. i put my jacket on and left, as i didn't want any confrontation with campus police. i stayed close to the building outside, and saw a car arrive with 2 cops and they went up. i returned after a couple of hours, and she was still there in my room. she said she told them that she was angry when she called, and was sorry for calling them, and didn't want me to get in any trouble at all.

i got called up to some office (student conduct?) and this psychologist had a meeting with me. i explained to her why i did what i did, and she kept on saying it is still illegal and i could get in trouble with the law for false imprisonment. i said my gf is not pressing any charges, and is in fact thanking me for restraining her. she said it doesn't matter, and that i shouldn't do it again in the future. i told her plainly that i had no regrets and would AGAIN do the same in the same situation.

anyway, i didn't get in any trouble, thankfully.

btw, is it true that one could get in trouble with the law even if the aggrieved party does not press charges??? i mean, i was shocked when she said it didn't matter, because compared to other cases where women get beaten by their husbands and the husbands don't get in any trouble because the wife drops the charges, mine was NOTHING. i never hurt her.

so basically, those who care, are fucked in such situations.

Dude, don't you ever watch COPS? If a chick calls the cops, the dude ALWAYS goes to jail. If they don't have an excuse they make one up. Especially since she said you touched her, I'm amazed they left you alone. You're just lucky they were too lazy to track you down that night.

^^Mmmm, I would have done the same thing as your girl. No one better touch me if I want to leave and I am not under the influence.

A better approach might have been to just flush her keys down the toilet and leave.

bitches are crazy when they get held up when they want to go due to being pissed, add booze to the situation and you probably get a 1-2% chance of someone dying everytime.

^ i should've.

i had to knock her beer out of her hand before she reached the strip where cops were standing around.

she made sure to make a scene right in front of the cops so i would look like a bad guy.

With drunk driving, I think there comes a point when you just have to let people go. I mean, grabbing on to the car and not letting go until you die is just ridiculous. If you're that worried about the person, call the cops.

And we've all seen sober arguments revolving around a car that get a little risky...you know, where one person is in the driver's seat trying to shut the door but the other person is outside the car trying to keep the door open so they can continue the argument. And eventually the driver puts it in drive and tries to drive away and things are a bit dangerous for a few seconds before the other person gives up and lets the car go and just throws something at it dramatically as it pulls away...

That's not sexist. That's just plain wrong.

Compare the death rates between young men and young women.

"HEY, GUYS! I'M DRUNK, AND I THINK I'M GONNA JUMP THIS GORGE ON MY MOTORCYCLE! YEAH!" -not a woman

^ sorry i wasn't talking about situations like that. that's joyriding and showing off. yeah men excel at that.

i am talking about storming off and doing something silly or stupid when you are really angry or sad. i don't know, i don't have any numbers, i was just saying something, and anyway, as i said, that wasn't the main point anyway.

Well especially in that car, if it was an automatic (and we all know it was since women can't drive stick), if she got in and hit this gas, which it looks like she did, judging by the skid marks, the guy may have thought it was safer to hold on than fall off onto the street or something - she was driving pretty reckless so instincts probably kicked in and he just held on

I am pretty sure if your engaged to someone you are not gonna let go. Maybe in a situation where they are not completely smashed but if you honestly feel they are about to kill themselves you would intervene.
