90 minute cutscene? WTF, is this a game or a movie? Jeez, I hope that is just the ending scene or something.

even if it is the ending scene, that still sucks. You're playing a video game, which means you're supposed to be interacting with the little men on the screen. Do you really want to be an hour and a half removed from participating when the game actually ends?

I saw another article saying that there were several of those cutscenes, I don't think it's just one...

Ha, it's Hideo Kojima. Which means it's a game that he wishes were a movie. Just like all Metal Gears.

The gameplay is always great in the series but I enjoy the plot/cutscenes so much that that is the reason I play the series.

Looks like the 90-minute cut scene thing is an exaggeration. People who have played it have also said it has around 20 hours of pure gameplay, which is amazing considering the longest MGS thus far as been around 18 hours gameplay + cutscenes.

^Pretty much, complaining about cutscenes in MGS is like complaining about shooting in an fps, it's part of the game. I was actually excited to hear it might have 90 minute cutscenes It's going to too take a lot of exposition to wrap up this story in a way that's satisfying to the fans.

every mgs is like this. personally it kills the replay value. metal gear is definitely one of those series that peaks the first time you play it

is there some kinda mgs pack of some previous games for ps3 or xbox360?

my ps3 isn't backwards compatible but I'd like to play the others before I get this.

heres the product
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16879248059&nm_mc=OTC-Froogle&cm_mmc=OTC-Froogle-_-PS2+Video+Games-_-KONAMI-_-79248059

now that I look at that it's for PS2 and you said 3, but i guess it would run on there. Some say ps2 games actually look worse on ps3 though.

well, if you just want the story part, every MGS so far has a previous story part on the menu where it summarizes the other games.

Come on, this is a bit off base Shrike. I'm not complaining about a MGS gameplay attritbute, I'm simply saying that quite possibly up to multiple 90 minute cut scenes is a little much and heavy handed. I mean you can't pause or save during these huge stretch runs of cinema so doesn't it seem a bit odd for a video game to push you into an hour and a half on the fly for a video? Maybe it asks you to save and warns you what's ahead - I hope.

Keep in mind I'm not saying I'm not going to get the game (lol). Anyone with a PS3 would be an idiot not to get this game....I just get really bored in bloated cut scenes nowadays where I used to love it when I was a kid. I think about lapping up a game like Xenogears so long ago and now I'd fucking shut the game down becuase I want in on the action already. I can't stand JRPGS including FF now becuase of this reason....where dammit I just want the reins and shut up already about convulted cracker jack plots.

Calll it impatient, low attention span, it doesn't matter - it's just a function of time and not having much of it in the day as I used to. I think getting barraged with cutscenes is quite honestly a sincere and debatable critique of the more recent entries of metal gear franchise and kojima's style. No one is trolling here.

Look, all I'm saying is that it's a series convention. Kojima isn't going to change the way he makes games just because your tastes have changed. MGS is definitely not a series that clicks with everyone, and I guarantee you MGS4 will receive tons of backlash from people who don't like lengthy cut scenes or complex stories in their games, all the entries in the series have.

I just don't see the point of criticizing something that you know you're getting yourself into beforehand. The cut scenes are one the things that sets this series apart from any other in gaming, I fucking love them. The nice thing is if your one of the people who don't, you can pause them now or skip them completely.

That's my point, and why I think you are being too defensive. The single longest cutscene in metal gear history has a runtime of like what 40-45 minutes tops? And that was one of the more longer sequences in MGS2. So there are quite possibly mutliple ones easily over double that size through the game? How is that not eye opening?

Again, I plan on purchasing the game and enjoying it, but to say you have no valid talking points here in a MGS discussion thread because 'thats how kojima is, deal with it' is very dismissive and stupid shrike. I think it's a valid discussion point at least, depending on your perspective - potentially a critique point. But whatever it is, it sure doesn't deserve censoring as you call for it, or dismissed as troll fodder. That pisses me off.

Uh, I'm not the one being defensive here. All I said is that I think it's a stupid criticism. That's my opinion. I don't think your trolling and don't care if you criticize the game. I already said that I understand this series has a lot of haters. If that's what you came here to do, have a ball. I just don't agree with you.

Check out the series of retrospectives Gametrailers has done of the series,

http://www.gametrailers.com/game/6748.html.

They do a pretty good run down on the series, although they don't really get into some of the finer points of the plot (probably a good thing to be quite honest). It'll give you a pretty good idea of what you'll be getting yourself into though.

Anyone who wants to brush on their MGS knowledge and check out all the released info on MGS4 in one place, look to this thread,

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=303161.

Also, the PS3 theme the guy posted in there might be the most awesome thing ever.

I'm on the fence about getting this. I loved MGS1 and 2, but I LOATHED MGS3 (I know, I know). I don't even think I gave it more than three hours tops.

Plus I'm strapped for cash. I may just camp Classifieds and buy a used copy once you guys beat it

mgs1 - solid snake infiltrates shadow moses island in alaska per the request of colonel roy campbell. snake is to locate and attempt to rescue two hostages: darpa chief donald anderson and armstech president kenneth baker. both men die in snake's presence within minutes (the anderson snake meets is actually decoy octopus; the real anderson was tortured to death by ocelot) due to foxdie (injected into him by naomi hunter), a genetically engineered virus that induces cardiac arrest in persons with specific genetic markers.

snake meets meryl (campbell's daughter); they fall in love. snake meets otacon; they become bff. snake discovers his old buddy gray fox is still alive and is cutting a swath through shadow moses in a cybernetically enhanced ninja outfit. snake learns of the les enfants terribles project - he is a clone of the big boss and that he is genetically identical to his nemesis, liquid (liquid also tells him that snake received all of the dominant genes).

liquid tricks snake into activating the launch sequence for metal gear REX. with gray fox's help, snake defeats REX and liquid and escapes shadow moses with either meryl or otacon, depending on how you handled ocelot's torture. a still-alive liquid gives chase and almost kills snake but succumbs to foxdie. during the epilogue, you learn that ocelot was actually working for the US president all along (solidus, the third brother), that snake was actually genetically inferior to liquid, and that foxdie will eventually kill him (snake).

His intention were to obtain Baker's disk containing Metal Gear's specifications and deliver it to the President.[38]"

just check out wikipedia, it has all the plot summaries.
