"In the middle of it all was 22-year-old New Yorker Matt Murphy, who emerged from beneath the pile holding the ball Bonds hit for career home run No. 756. His face was bloodied and his clothes stretched and torn from his battle in the bleachers.

A team of San Francisco police officers moved in, extracted Murphy from the crowd, and quickly led him through a tunnel and into a secure room.

As he high-fived other fans, Murphy, wearing a New York Mets jersey and cap, slid the ball into the back pocket of his plaid Bermuda shorts.

Reporters screamed questions, but all he managed to say was, "I'm Matt Murphy from Queens, N.Y."

"I just hope he didn't get hurt," Bonds said after the game, which the Giants lost 8-6 to the Washington Nationals. He said he had no interest in getting the ball back for himself.
"I don't want the ball," Bonds said. "I've never believed a home run ball belonged to the player. If he caught it, it's his."

Murphy and a friend were en route to Australia and in San Francisco for a one-day layover, a Giants spokesman said. They purchased tickets just before the game."

Matt, don't embarrass us from Queens and turn out and do something real stupid. Like give the ball to Barry. Or to MLB.

Blow that fucker up, Red Sox style.

I'm only familiar with the "Bartman ball" (Cubs) being blown up.

I was just referring to my notions of how fucking and irrational red sox fans are. My Yankee roots gives me privilege to that.

But yes Cubbie Style would also suffice. I would accept also Baltimore Style, as long as it involves the head of Peter Angelos and some sort of rawhide.

My two cents... as read by David Glenn on 850 the Buzz yesterday ~4:00pm.

Thanks David for the read... even though you were in the middle of discussing ACC football...

Quote :
"I feel like before weighing in on Bonds I have put a disclaimer, so here it is.

This is not about whether Barry is a great player. He is. He’s a 1st ballot hall of famer and should be considered one of, if not the, greatest player ever.

This is not about race. He’s black, so what? It’s the 21st century. Nobody cares if he’s white, black, Hispanic, purple, or pink polka dotted.

This isn’t about assigning blame for the steroid era. Everyone involved fouled up. Individual players decided to cheat, and the league let it slide. Each are equally accountable, and equally guilty in my book.

This is not about convicting Bonds of cheating. Bonds never flunked a drug test, end of story. Let the courts figure out whether Bonds lied. The legal system’s job is to determine his guilt or innocence, so let them do it.

This IS about the home run record and the fact that it’s owned by a guy who took steroids. Bonds has already admitted he took them. Whether he knew it or not is irrelevant. The once mythical record is in the hands of a steroid user. That fact is indisputable. That’s like congratulating a marathon winner that took a short cut. It doesn’t matter whether he knew it was a short cut or not, the bottom line is he had an edge. An ILLEGAL edge. Nothing he says or does will ever make that go away.

Baseball doesn’t need to put an asterisk next to Barry bonds. The asterisk is already there in the hearts and minds of the fans. Face it, in the hands of Barry Bonds, the home run record loses the prestige of being the single greatest achievement in all of sports. Nothing short of someone passing Barry will ever change that."

***Addendum***

It does matter that he's non-white, but the racial issue is not the main reason people dislike Bonds.

Also, someone needs to pass Bonds WITHOUT any suspician of steriods. Like him or hate him.... go A-Rod

A black man broke another black man's record. So a white guy is racist because he didn't want a moonheaded cheater breaking the record of a clean black guy??

Now if you want to get into racist talk when Hank was chasing Ruth, that's fine, that's legit. But ANY racist talk of bonds breaking Hanks record is absolutely BULL SHIT!

^correct me if i'm wrong...aren't there 7 paragraphs and aren't the first 5 the disclaimer?

not that it matters and it was obviously good enough to be read on the air...i just had trouble understanding what was the disclaimer and what was the topic...seemed the "its NOT about" were the disclaimer and the "it IS about" was the topic...but again, its not really important

Everytime anyone says the record is tainted, you get the following responses:

1) He never flunked a drug test!
2) Bud Selig never did anything about it!
3) Everyone was doing steroids!
4) You just hate him because he's black!
5) He was a great player BEFORE taking the roids!

...hence the disclaimer. Simple fact - the homer run king took steroids. That's all you have to know to realize the record is tainted.

When people get off topic, get back to the basics.

i dont have statistics in hand, but i'd say the fanbase of baseball has a white majority, and thus people following the sport and realizing how tainted the record really is are mostly white. it would only make sense then to say its white people hatin on bonds, but it does not make sense to credit that to racism. in fact, its insulting to think someone cant have a moral-based opinion without being slandered.

the only reason Bonds takes more heat for roids than McGwire, etc is because:

- he is still playing
- he has the most homers in MLB history, and before he broke Hank's record he had more than McGwire, Sosa, etc
- boo hoo lets feel sorry for the mutli millionaire asshole

Bonds used steroids, oh no!

If Bonds hit home runs off pitchers using steroids, does that make it a legit home run? Because lets face facts, the second that McGwire and Sosa started their home run chase everyone in the league probably started shooting up knowing that no one would say a word.

i guess the only way to know for sure is to go back in time and give Griffey roids

and no it doesnt make it a "legit homerun"...i see the point that you're making...its just not a very good one

^^no but they help you recover from injuries faster

it reasonable to think that not only would Griffey have more homeruns in his current number of games played, but he would probably have played more games

still though...i fully believe Clemens, Gagne, and other pitchers juiced...wtf does that matter to Hank Aaron?

If steroids could make you throw a 110mph fastball kind of like how they can help a power hitter hit a 500 foot homerun you might be onto something

Who is to say they can't? Or who's to say they didn't prolong starts and deny home runs due to dimished play from shitty relievers? I mean, if you're going to argue that one of the main benefits of doing steroids is a quicker recovery time, pitchers would benefit much more than hitters.

The entire game was tainted to no end, I think it's silly to go "Yeah, but he CHEATED" when everyone else was too.

he's still the spokesman by default because the majority of people relate steroids in baseball more with hitting long balls than pitching even though i think you'd have to be naive to NOT think lots of hitters and pitchers juiced...and he has the most long balls...i GUARANTEE you that if McGwire was the one who was going for 756 the same shit would happen...hell he might get it worse since Canseco was his teammate in Oakland

but the reason I say steroids can't make you throw a 110mph fastball is the fastest pitches ever thrown to my knowledge arent more than 100,101,maybe 102

the relative speed difference of 110 to 100 would be absurd and a ton of people would notice...they say you can tell a big difference in a 92mph fastball versus a 98mph fastball so i'm sure we'd have an idea if juicing gave pitchers the same tangible power advantage that it gives hitters

plus pitchers still have a lot smaller target (the strike zone) than hitters (the entire outfield wall) so it certainly seems to me that hitters benefited a lot more than pitchers

I realize why he's essentially been made the posterboy for it, I just think it's dumb.

Even if steroids can't have you reaching 110, who knows how many 90 mph fastballs they turned into 100 mph fastballs. Like you said, it makes a big difference. I'm sure not all juicers were going in with intention of making it blatantly obvious they were on steroids and throwing 110 mph fastballs out of nowhere would do just that.

Lets put it this way, if I were looking for steroid users, it's a lot more feasible (in my mind, at the very least) for Barry Bonds to hit 73 home runs in a season with steroids than it would be for Roger Clemens to start throwing 110 mph fastballs without them. Bonds was always an amazing hitter, so him hitting a groove one year isn't completely out of the question after watching McGwire and Sosa do it. If Clemens were to pick up 7 mph in an offseason, people would be real curious.

Quote :
"plus pitchers still have a lot smaller target (the strike zone) than hitters (the entire outfield wall) so it certainly seems to me that hitters benefited a lot more than pitchers"

This ignores the fact that the batter has to hit the ball. The barrel of the bat is much smaller than the strike zone.

true

and in regards to pitchers juicing Gagne was an offspeed location pitcher when he came into the league and all of a sudden got big and started throwing in the mid to high 90s when before he was barely reaching 90...just seems like if a joel zumaya or randy johnson (and obviously he is as skinny as a beanpole) were juicing, their already 98-99mph fastballs would go way up...who knows

i just dont have any problem with bonds taking the blame more than any other player because no other player was threatening any coveted record like bonds was

gagne was a starter throughout his minor league career and during his first few years in the big leagues before being converted to a reliever

it only follows naturally that he would start throwing harder after moving to the pen
