yes, but that was in retaliation for Early Times being posted... Early times also comes in a plastic bottle for $15/handle... and I don't see how it can be ranked...

http://gardenandgun.com/article/bourbon-renaissanceNice little review of 4 favorites from the folks at Garden & Gun... Their faves are:Eagle Rare - 10 YearPappy Van Winkle - 15 YearFour RosesBlanton'sBoth Eagle Rare and Four Roses come in under $40 a bottle, which ain't too shabby for a small batch I reckon. Anyone here tried either?
4/12/2011 1:02:09 PM
I have a bottle of the eagle rare 10yr, and it's excellent.the pappy van winkle is probably my next purchase.[Edited on April 12, 2011 at 1:10 PM. Reason : .]

my parents always have four roses at their house - it's goodfirst tried it at a tasting a few years ago

after finding my local store with a woeful selection, picked up a bottle of bulleit, thanks in part to this thread and a few other things.may become a staple of the bulk liquors.ty tww

Buffalo Trace.Better than Maker's Mark
4/20/2011 5:48:44 PM
Eagle Rare is a great bourbon at a decent price. Blanton's is really good too, but it's a bit pricey. Pappy van Winkle is amazing but pricey.Try Booker's also. Another solid bourbon but expensive.Bulleit is still my favorite in terms of quality/price ratio.
4/20/2011 5:51:51 PM
I'll have to try Eagle Rare.Have you tried Buffalo Trace?
4/20/2011 5:59:47 PM
Buffalo Trace - very nice
4/20/2011 6:33:27 PM
I like Buffalo Trace. Haven't been able to find it in NC, though.
4/20/2011 6:50:57 PM
What I don't understand is people that pollute good bourbon with coke. It's sacrilege.

^^^^^Buffalo Trace is one of the few I haven't tried yet. I'm living near bourbon country for another year and that's one of the distilleries I need to make it to. Maybe I'll try it this weekend. Also, Basil Heyden (sp?) is OK but I think it's way overpriced. Good in a manhattan but If you're spending the money, get something else. Don't love it neat or on the rocks. Sorry, I'm bad at describing flavors and aromas but can def give a thumbs up or down.

living in Louisville, I have the luxury of all the liquour stores carrying a hefty bourbon selection. Though sometimes it is tough to find a large scotch selection, anyway.I am going to echo what has been said, that for the price (24.99 a 1/5 here) Buffalo Trace is as good as it gets. I prefer it to Maker's, Knob Creek and Woodford (which I just learned has only been around since '96, who knew)
4/21/2011 11:33:33 AM
Not sure if it has been said, but maker's mark is the most overrated bourbon. It's not bad by any means, but for the price it gets way too much fanfare when there's so much better bourbon out there at the same pricepoint.

i think we need a drink recipes thread!

I've started drinking a lot of Knob Creek Single Barrel, neat or on the rocks. I'll switch to regular Knob Creek when I want to make a manhattan.I'm not a fan of Makers. Most everything in that price range tastes better.
4/21/2011 3:04:29 PM
having a little evening Buffalo Trace tonight!
4/21/2011 9:22:41 PM
I'll second that. Buffalo Trace is probably my favorite bourbon, though I haven't tried as many as I have scotches; at the very least, it's a great value compared to some of the other best bourbons.
4/21/2011 9:40:25 PM
Glad Blanton's finally got mentioned. Best single barrel easily IMO.
4/22/2011 9:50:43 PM
In my opinion, you can't beat Eagle Rare for the price, $27/750ml here in VA. I believe Buffalo Trace is from the same distillery, so a taste test may be in order. Also, tried Jim Beam Black - surprisingly not terrible.
4/23/2011 12:15:22 AM
Tried Old Fitzgerald 12 year and Jefferson's last night. Liked them both but of the two the Fitzgerald was my favorite.
4/23/2011 8:07:30 AM
I just picked up a bottle of the 4 roses based on this thread, however it was the small batch. The guy at the store said they don't carry it all the time and was harder to find. I plan on going back in a few days however and getting the single barrel 4 roses though. Anyone tried this small batch blend?

Russel's Reserve is what's in my cabinet right now. I also like Woodford. If I'm mixing it with anything, it's regular Beam or even Ancient Age. I don't mix top shelf bourbon with anything but ice cubes.

^ good pick!Drink it neat.
6/6/2011 11:37:57 PM
yea i actually manhatten'ed it w/out the bitters, but i've been doing rocks latelyi've had woodford reserve for awhile but i just couldnt drink that like KCi have a trip to vegas coming up, being able to drink straight bourbon is probably not a good sign.
6/6/2011 11:48:37 PM
a manhattan without the bitters is just bourbon with a cherry in it. Manhattans are an awesome Vegas drink. That's practically all I ordered in Vegas last go-around, and they were superb everywhere. I have only had 2 decent manhattans in the triangle area.
6/8/2011 7:29:14 PM
no cherries in a manhattan try orange zest instead[Edited on June 8, 2011 at 8:38 PM. Reason : a]
6/8/2011 8:37:42 PM
^ It's interesting that you bring up oranges and bourbon. I like to run an orange wedge around the inside of my glass before I enjoy a pour of Bulleit over just a little bit of ice.
6/9/2011 6:23:30 PM
Old Fashions are rather tasty, but I'm not a fan of the added sugar. Bourbon is sweet enough on its own.
6/9/2011 7:49:01 PM
Wild turkey 101 is tasty.I've gotta get some Buffalo Trace
6/9/2011 10:30:27 PM
Wild Turkey American Honey .....my new go to bottle.
6/9/2011 10:56:14 PM
I like Woodford Reserve, although Maker's Mark is pretty good.Currently drinking on a bottle of 1791.
6/10/2011 6:52:58 PM
I like my bourbon room temp, no rocks, straight up...Swoon!
6/10/2011 8:02:51 PM
Lately I have been been drinking Weller 107 a lot. It's quite tasty and an excellent value. On sale this month for $18.99.Blanton's is by far my favorite and and it I could afford it I would drink it all the time.
6/11/2011 5:55:22 PM
^^very manly.

6/11/2011 9:16:28 PM
sweet vermouth goes in a manhattan, not dry vermouth like a martini. Ideally you just want enough to get the ice wet.
6/12/2011 3:12:02 AM
Bought some Four Roses (bc of this stupid thread ) and it is quite good. My standby is Elijah Craig, and this is smoother imo.
6/13/2011 11:03:15 PM
Evan Williams handles are on sale for $20.xx right now.

I'm a barley guy, Stranahans single-malt whiskey or nothing. After tasting what corn does to beer, I could never get into bourbon.BUT, if I were to drink bourbon, has anyone tried A. Smith Bowman from Virginia?[Edited on June 15, 2011 at 12:27 AM. Reason : .]
