maybe the info in this thread is still totally valid (and most of it is, i'm sure), but since hosts are always offering deals and things change (quality of service, storage/bandwidth, etc.), i figured it was time for a bump

my current hosting ends on december 31st...it's a reseller account that i currently pay $99/year for:

3gb space
45gb bandwidth
cpanel (which i love, really)
fantastico (suite of install-on-demand apps like shopping carts, blogging software, etc.)
unlimited everything else (domains, subdomains, ftp accounts, email accounts, etc.)

i'm pretty sure that by today's standards (i've been with this company for 3 years), i'm over-paying, and truth be told, they're not THAT great...so i'm looking for a new hosts

now, i don't actually do any account reselling...rather, i provide pro bono site design, web space, and bandwidth for a number of small non-profits whose needs are similar and rather small in terms of time, space, and bandwidth

however, i REALLY like the way this is set up - i manage the accounts from a central management tool and then each domain has their own cpanel app so that they can manage it (simple things like email/ftp accounts, mysql, etc.) on their own (they access their own site through http://www.theirdomain.com/cpanel)

i'd like to move hosts to save money and get (relatively) better service, but keep this same GENERAL setup (i like cpanel and webhost, but i don't NEED them...i'd just like for the ability to exist for the individual site owners to access their own stuff without asking me for help)...more space for the same price would also be nice, as i've got a list of people who'd like to use this...i don't make any money on it, so cheap is important (i realize that if i REALLY wanted great service, i'd get my own server or drop more than $8/month)

suggestions? again, the ability to host multiple domains on the same server is key

I just upgraded my 1and1 account to the Business account. I dont know about the Cpanel support, but ive got 6 domains currently being hosted there

Right now they are running the $5.82 / month deal for 3 domains, 200 subdomains, 250gb webspace and 2.5TB (2,500 GB) monthly transfer (plenty for me). Not sure if this is what you're looking for, but Im pretty much sold on 1and1 for their customer support alone - so for its been great.

I know people bitch about Dreamhost, but I'm entering the 3rd year with them and I haven't had any problems. With one account you can host however many domains. It's really easy to have an account that can manage all domains, or one that only has access to one.

well im managing 6 domains through this one account - but that deal just comes with 3 additional free domain registrations. if you already have domains, you can just have them transfered over.

Yeah, dreamhost ftw man. You can setup separate users and assign domains to have a combination of multiple users or just one user for access to info.

50OFFROB will get you 50 bucks off your first year. They just changed the rules this month to only allow people to give up to 50 off, whereas before it was 97 off.

i like 1and1's $5.82/mo deal, but that's only for the first year...i don't want to pay twice that after 12 months...and dreamhost isn't really a good deal since you have to pay a $50 setup fee if you pay monthly, or no fee if you pay yearly (at $10/mo)...the $50 off is only for the first year

I get way better service, features, and reliability with Dreamhost than I was getting with Verio, and it's cheaper. It really isn't that difficult to pick up a referral or two every year on the dreamhost setup so it can become free or damn near free.

I was reading the FAQ's on bluehost and they say you have to send them a copy of a photo ID either by mail, fax, or upload form.

^ That's kind of an abstract question, but I'll answer as best I can. It's pretty standard. They have a custom backend, but it's similar in function to something like cpanel. Do you have a more specific question? I think the site5 site has a backend demo page.

I'm thinking about getting new hosting as well. I've narrowed it down to bluehost and site5. Who would recommend which and why? I am leaning towards bluehost because of the demo of their config but site5 does not have one. They do have a demo for cpanel for reseller accounts but thats not the account i'll be getting.

I have Bluehost and have never had any issues. cPanel is what I like and that was the big kicker for not using 1and1. Plus with 1and1 you had all these wacky MySQL requirements and there was a wait time when adding a database. Like 15 min or something. Never quite got that.

With hosting providers there is almost always something to gripe about but I have yet to find something for Bluehost.

signed up for site5 earlier today. One thing I noticed odd was at work I could ssh into my hosting just fine. I come home and I can't anymore. Keeps saying I'm using the incorrect password but i know the password is right. It started happening after I password protected directory browsing. Could this have effected ssh?

don't you have to wait 24-72 hours for all the stuff to get setup correctly, like for the domain propagation?

just a suggestion, because I had the same issues when I first signed up for dreamhost a couple of years ago

^thats what I thought to but then my domain worked about an hour after setup. which was wierd. before that I had to ssh in with the ip address. I will try ssh with the ip address now and see if thats the issue.

using the terminal in Mac OS X. Even the terminal within coda returns an invalid password. Even though I can successfully connect using the same username to my ftp/email/directory browsing I'll troubleshoot it tomorrow.
