NO, Defending all thats good in this world was not the reason the US went to Iraq. However, when the US invades or liberates another country, it should be its mission to establish a stable government, build schools, etc...basically help provide the building blocks so the liberated people can be on their way to their own freedoms.
However, if the US was just out to get land and build its empire, then they'd be more concerned with quantity rather then quality.9/24/2007 9:26:56 PM |

Fair enough. But that is a function of the Department of State, not Department of Defense.
Again, its not the United States Armed Forces job to build nations. 9/24/2007 10:58:58 PM |

Meh, I would argue that it isn't semantics. I know it is easy to view the government as one unitary entity, but one of the biggest issues in the armed forces right now is disentigration of primary mission skills on account of the non-standard missions many units are performing.
As well as soft power plays in the media, the military is a violent organization, trained to execute violence on behalf of the elected officials of the American people, and the combat arms branches attract men (and occasionally women) who are intent on doing said violence. This doesn't give leave to service members to become vicious thugs, they still must operate with the best judgement they possibly can. 9/25/2007 6:21:22 AM |

As long as the bait's labeled properly, I don't have a problem with this program.

How about:
WARNING: FOR INSURGENT USE ONLY! 9/25/2007 3:17:22 PM |

That could work.
We should hand out exploding questionnaires.
"Do you identify as a terrorist and/or insurgent?"

Now I get it. It's ok to kill'em. Just illegal to bait'em.
I know, I'm going to hell.
