Seriously, how do you start a thread like this and not UPDATE with the most IMPORTANT INFO? 10/4/2007 10:06:15 AM |

My insurance company lists the various prices at the hospitals and doctors around town. The $6k is just the hospital cost alone, it does not include your anesthesia/epidural, your doctor's fees, and anyone consulting. Heaven forbid you require a C-section. Then each prenatal visit (12+) is at least $100, ultrasounds depending on how in depth are $200-600, then all of the blood work and other tests can run you a pretty penny. I know that my husband and I met our $2300 deductible by our 4th month of pregnancy.
And WakeMed's standard discount for early pay out of pocket is 30%. 10/4/2007 10:12:38 AM |

I pay $110 for each prenatal visit. Now that i'm going twice a month it's $55/visit. (still $110/month) So far that's all we've paid out of pocket. I think the most we can expect to pay (including the prenatal visits) will total somewhere around $2k. I need to go back and look. It could be more if there are complications or I end up having a c-section. I plan on having her at Rex. My pregancy has been perfectly fine so far. no problems. all tests and exams show that she's developing normal. They don't think i'll have any problems with the birth. I do want that epidural though.
I have the BCBS state employee plan. 80:20. I wish I'd been able to switch to the 90:10 plan.. oh well. It costs $500 to add a dependent on and then an additional amount (under $100 so ~ $600) for the family plan (husband + baby). That's a big chunk of my pay. (I need to start working on my national board cert right away for the salary increase)
Having a baby certainly isn't cheap. the 2K doesn't seem all that bad after hearing about what some other people have paid....
If anyone needs a good recommendation for an OBGYN, pm me. I have been extremely happy with where i've been going. They're next to the birthing center at Rex.
\rant What frustrates me is this.... A friend of the family is pregnant. I've met her a few times. She's 18 and has a (slight) learning disability. The father (bf) also has learning disabilities (more severe than hers). So already this child is at risk. Her and her mother have been dependent on the state their whole lives. They've never held down a job for more than a week and are unemployed most of the time. They're both perfectly able to work, they're just lazy. She (the pregnant girl) will not have to pay a cent for her prenatal care and the baby. The father works a part-time unskilled job (laundry service I think).
Fair?

One of my friends from highschool had a baby last year and did not pay a penny either, not for the pregnancy testing, not for the prenatal visits, not for the delivery or hospital stay. Not even a copay or anything. That made me sick. Apparantly pregnancy medicaid is the way to go. 10/4/2007 12:01:25 PM |

^ I assure you someone is paying--- the people who work hard and already purchase their own insurance in addition to paying for these folks. 10/4/2007 2:15:33 PM |
