the one thing they do have going is that the interface on the zune is leaps and bounds nicer than anything else out there. also, the sec. gen. is a really nice looking player compared to the previous generation. they're just not going to overtake apple on this one. boring as the ipod is.

but cheap Zune 30 + new free firmware updates = the win

with the new firmware, the display looks better, i think they upped the resolution a bit, text is smaller and scrolls more smoothly, and the new wifi sync is cool, though i never see myself needing to use it

The original Zune hit 2 million some time in the late summer. Their market share has been described as ranging from 3% up to 10% depending on what you consider the market (for example, hard to compare all ipod sales to Zune when the bulk of ipod sales are flash-based and zune only offered a single hdd-based unit). It has made a small dent in the market and that I would consider a success in the first year+.

The interface on the zune is slick as hell... better than the ipod for my tastes. I don't think there is a better DMP deal out there than the zune30. I like the option of the $15 monthly pass for the entire catalog, might switch to it soon.

Most of the review sites I have seen say it's better than the 80 gig ipod, I'm gonna try to get one of these.

With the new firmware, can you use the Zune as a harddrive yet (portable storage of things other than music, like cd iso images, etc...) without hacking your registry?

This is the biggest deciding factor for me this christmas for which MP3 player i ask for.

^^ I haven't seen anything like that no, as far as I can tell with the new firmware you still communicate with the zune with the zune player software, which is just media and music

that's one thing i miss a little about my dell dj, but not really i didn't use it much

^^I did it for a Christmas gift. It shipped two-day air via Fed-Ex and the artwork looks pretty nice, but there were only one or two that I personally liked.

finally gave in and got a zune 80... an 8 hour car trip to mammoth next week was the last bit of motivation i needed.

except for a weird glitch where it won't let me sign in to the marketplace (not buying music there anyways) i love it.

Yeah I really like mine also. The headphones are 10x better than ipod headphones, and I love the magnets on the backs of the earbuds.

Sometimes mine hangs up while syncing, and tells me it can't complete, so I have to unplug and replug the device. Not a problem when syncing music, but movies take a while so that is annoying when it happens (not very often thankfully).
