I hope the merger does go through. I really would love to have XM integrated into my car. My car came installed with Sirius, and it's all builtin to the navigation system, etc, so I had to get an external XM device installed.

has anyone tried out one of the portable XM receivers? I'm tempted to get a Pioneer portable unit, but I'm afraid that the battery life will be horrible.

I've got the Pioneer Inno2 which is what I have hooked up in my office. As a portable unit, I wasn't too terribly impressed with its reception, especially when I was out running. The antenna is pretty small (that little nub sticking out of it). There are some companies that make a pair of ear buds that also act as a longer antenna, but I haven't tried them.

If I do end up running with it, I will just play what it recorded in it's 50 hour buffer.

The battery life is fine in both modes (live satellite play, and recorded playback)

that's interesting about the antenna being weak. I was wondering about that as well, seeing as how the portable car satellite antenna that comes with the roady models sucks when you get around tall trees and have the antenna inside the car.

They're the same price, and they're basically the same thing, from what I've heard (I have XM).

Soon, they will be the same thing. [/merger]

Price (XM & Sirius):

12.95/month for the first unit.
6.99/month for family account lines after the first (I'm on my folks, so thats how I get it on the cheap)

Channels:

My favorites/presets are:
202- Opie & Anthony/Ron & Fez
48- Squizz
42- Liquid Metal
47- Ethel
41- Boneyard
54- Lucy
30- XM Hitlist
26- Flight 26
20- 20 on 20
45- Starbucks

Portable Units:

I have a Nexus portable, that basically is an mp3 player when portable and live in the car or on the cradle at home. I really enjoy listening to it, and have close to a gig of music time-shifted on the unit. I am never lacking for music to listen to. I use it to run and mow the grass and have had nice battery life on it. Just don't leave it out in the car. I did, it got hot, and the battery is now screwed, much like cellphone batteries do.

same. I buy 3 years at a time, and keep it locked in at the low rate it was when I first got it. The last time I renewed, they told me that this would be the last time I could get that discount.

I was thinking between the instability of anything dealing with a merger, and never having subscribed before, I just went with the monthly rates which are $13 or so. Gotta say it's not as good as I thought it would be, but it's ridiculously better than standard radio. Need to buy in one of the long term rates and get a better deal. My favourites:

30 Hitlist
45 Starbucks
66 Raw Hip Hop
68 The Heat
81 BPM - Nice for those long road trips
84 XM Chill - " "
94 Caliente

I pretty much listen to:

all the sports talk channels
BPM - 81
The Move - 80
The System - 82
Fungus - 53
Talk Radio for AM Coast to Coast at night - 165
Old Time Radio - 164 (some really cool shit on here)
and the greatest station... XM Comedy 150

dylan has a show "theme time radio" that has been jumping around stations

he basically picks a theme (like modes of transportation, the south, drankin songs, etc...) and has an hour of songs he thinks fits it

20 (on 20), 30 (hitlist), 46 (top tracks), 54 (lucy), 202 (virus.. ftw.)

although with lucy is seems like its all on who is picking the songs at any given moment.. if its not random or something? if lucy is bad i'll flip around between 46 and 54

ok here is its....a few of these i'll put an explaination next to if they kinda suck

7- 70's hits
8- 80's hits(only heard 2 songs but i liked them)
9- 90's hits(heard 2 songs and 1 of them kinda sucked)
14- bluegrass*
20- top 20 on 20 or some shit...good if you have company over
22- pop hits- if you want to stay current and have friends over
26- modern hits- nice change of tune from what i would normally listen to
30- hitlist- good for when you have company or want to hear something kinda newer prolly
43- i'm not big on all this new age white people music, but its for like college/indie and i listened to it for like 30 minutes and it was good background music
44- fred- i would probably rarely hear something i like on this but every now and then i would
46- prolly the station i can listen to longest without turning
47- its ok...not as good as i thought it would be
48- squizz- ok i suppose...i think its like modern rock or something
49- almost like 46, just sucks way more...did have zz top on earlier
50- the loft- pretty much like fred in that i'd rarely hear something i really like or makes me turn to it
52- the verge...just new emerging artists which kinda makes me want to listen to it
54- what i thought ethel was supposed to be i think
63- michael jackson station...definitely only good when you are drunk
66- rap
67- rap
68- rap
74- blues...good for drinking and relaxing
77- audio visions- basically relaxing like "fall asleep" type music*
81- kinda like channel 82, but not as good...trance/electronica type shit with words
82- trance
101- reggae*
110- classical*
113- piano*

* have to be in the right mood

so far i'm leaning toward channels 7, 8, 20, 30, 43, 46, 54, 68, 82, 110 i think
