some people put in cash for the "FTF" (first to find), but it's usually not something major

so how does it work exactly? You find a McD's toy or whatever and you take it as a prize? Do you leave something of your own behind for the next person to find?

^It depends. If they are a physical geocache, then it will have a log that you can sign. The smallest ones are film tube size to as small as 9mm bullet size. One I found Sat. was about the size of a postage stamp. If its a bigger cache, then it can have little goods you can leave and take. Some have travel bugs that you can pick up and drop off at other caches and see where they travel to.

I was first to find on three caches in town Friday! First time I got any first to finds. Really excited about that!

My problem is sometimes just finding time to do it. We went to Asheville in Feb. and I had every intention of doing some up there. But I could never get enough damn time to do it.

Oh well, it was cold as balls then. Its getting warmer now, so hopefully I can start hitting some more.

hmmm...I can fly an airplane, SCUBA dive, ski, and own a 4x4, will own another jet ski before TOO much longer, and have hiked 15 miles in like 5 hours while carrying 100 lbs of gear. I also own a portable automotive and an aviation/marine GPS. I bet I'd be good at this.

The ones in just some run of the mill park sound kinda lame--the ones where you really have to do something (like fly an airplane or take a boat/jet ski out to an island, then freedive or SCUBA dive to find it) sound pretty cool, though.

^Yes, but unfortunately, most of us can't do all that shit. I can fly, etc. but I don't have my own airplane to fly to a remote island and go fucking SCUBA diving. While that would definitely be an elite group that got that cache, I don't think I can take the family on an outing like that.

I've been looking into this a bit since I moved to Winston-Salem. It seems the Park Rangers are Nazis about it. Everyone has been having to cache outside the limits of parks. I go to Hanging Rock quite a bit. I think next time, I'll cache something, and put the coords here and see if someone picks it up.

^^Because often times geocaches are placed outside of the trails, which heavy foot traffic can damage. They love to tout the higher numbers of users to the parks when they ask for more funding, but they really don't want people who aren't interested in just staying on the trails for fear they will destroy the parks.

I feel a healthy compromise is in order. If the Rangers are shown it and made aware, and as long as excessive foot traffic doesn't damage any sort of sensitive wildlife or put cachers in an unsafe location, then I think its fine. God forbid people want to get out of their cars and explore our national parks, not just stay behind the ropes and let them lead you where they want you to go.

you hike a 1/4 mile into some gamelands and wait for a voice recorder to read you a second set of coordinates at midnight, then have to find the final one, it was quite an adventure, and my gps died on the way out so we guessed our way outta there at 1am.

ben94gt - "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil" is an awesome cache! I did that one with a group last year when Geowoodstock 5 was held at the NC Fairgrounds. Have you done Holy Wastewater yet? It is interesting...

I started caching a few years ago and got hooked. It has taken me to a lot of neat local places that I didn't know existed. I've also added some time for Geocaching to most any trip I take now. I've even cached in 5 countries in Europe now too. Caching on trips has also helped me see some neat places that only locals would have known about and has helped me learn a lot of history I never would have. went out this past weekend and found one of the more clever caches - it was a fake sprinkler head that unscrewed - we touched and looked at it multiple times before i finally risked getting sprayed and tried to unscrew it

It is very similar, but without a GPS. Instead you select the area, Raleigh for example, and then you will can pick through clues, which will usually include a road name or a park or something.

my mom and grandmother were interviewed recently for a geocaching book - there is a short audio clip of the interview on the site

it's about my grandfather that passed this past summer and him and my grandmother were ~35 caches short of 1000 and while he was on his death bed - a few members from the geocaching club they were a part of went out and gathered enough caches to bring them up to 999 and they created a 1000th golden ammo box - so my grandmother signed the logs for them all and they hit 1000 before he passed

^Yea there are a shitload around there. I was surprised that up here in Scotland Neck we have 4 that are within 2 blocks of my house that people have hidden. I have gotten some older ones that are gone now, but even out in the countryside there are probably a dozen or more I could ride around and get. I just rarely find the time to do it!

We probably should start a TWW Geocaching crew and list our geocaching names on here or something.

I started playing around with this in greensboro with the iphone app. Nothing hardcore, just got the clues within a few blocks of my house. I pass by them every day! The app is a great way to get people into it that normally wouldn't have had an interest!

The Magellan software is okay. I got a free Streets & Maps or something when I got mine. The worst part about mine is that it uses a serial connection and I'm not real sure whether its compatible with 7 or Vista. Usually when I do a cache, I just print the page and manually program the coordinates. The Map comes preloaded with most major interstates and highways, but since it is a handheld GPS, it is not worth a damn for street directions without loading the local street maps.

so has anyone used the iphone app? how accurate is it compared to a regular handheld gps? i'm starting out w/ this since i already have it...but if i really get into this stuff i would possibly pay for something else, esp if it might be more helpful while backpacking/camping/hiking/etc.
