Actors are over paid, pay actors less and give writers and crew more...I mean look at Scrubs...Zach Braff gets paid 350,000 an episode...thats fucking insane.

networks are calling online streams of their shows (with paid ads) "promotions" so that they don't have to pay the writers for them

tough shit. you got beat by the lawyers on this one. sue them if they gipped you out of money; if the court finds that the networks could do what they did then it's tough shit, once again. renegotiate your contracts to account for this in the future. don't whine like little babies that you didn't get your 8 cents.

on top of all of this, you were still paid to write. the crew workers who are currently unemployed due to your whiny asses are the ones going home poor.

why should they show good faith when the Studios don't?
The studios are claiming that DVDs are "still catching on", and are therefore they cannot spare any cash from DVD sales to pay the creators

If writers aren't important, and not worth the money, then I guess this strike shouldn't matter...but it does sooooo..... and if I were the studio heads, I'd be a tad concerned because with the internet, you don't need to have the money backing that you do with television and movies and so it becomes a matter of the studios needing the writers a hell of a lot more than the writers need the studios.

My ex tried to tell me that since he's a shareholder in all the studios in one form or another (mutual funds etc) that he says, 'fuck the writers, actors etc' because that means more money for the studios and therefore more money for him...but while it may benefit a share holder in the short term (if they keep that extra $.04 for themselves) in the long run and really, it's not even that much of a long run...the studios are gonna plummet because nothing new will come out and then it won't matter whether it's an extra $.04 or $4.00.

they handle the whole fucking issue of putting other people out of work by saying that the crew is their team and then showing offhand shots of people hanging around vans to support their point; it's cheap and manipulative and doesn't elicit sympathy. and then the rest of the video is them just being snarky jackasses. should I really feel bad for them?

^um....the crew is all in unions too and as a group they get paid more than the writers. Their teamsters are a lot more persuasive than the WGAs...

And the writers aren't shutting down anything...they are choosing not to work. They're not getting paid and they're not under contract. You can't make a person do something that they are not legally required to do or morally for that matter.

how are they being whiny? they are throwing their pity parade for 8 fucking cents that they aren't even legally entitled to in the first place.

^^^^are YOU retarded? Since when are you required to work (for less money than the crew btw) just so that another group of people can work? And you are aware that since there's a million reality tv shows, scripts aren't really needed nor are most of the news. There's plenty of crap scripts lying around that if the studios were that concerned about making sure the crew works in full force they absolutely could make it happen. Many of the seasons tv sitcom scripts have already been written...what they don't have are the writers there to do the rewrites

you're not required to work so someone else can work. it is a dick move though, especially when you're the rich kids. even more so when you baldly claim they are on your team. no one here is talking about reality shows. these scripted shows typically have "sets". have you heard of "sets" or are you really that retarded? what "crap scripts" are you talking about? give me a few examples.

No. They're withholding future service cause they're not happy with the arrangement. So the executive producers can make due without them or hire scabs.

It's kind of like your girlfriend withholds sex cause she's pissed off that you go to the bar with your friends too much.

^^^^^ & ^^^ I have no clue what that first part of your post is supposed to explain....I'm sure it's something, I just don't get it.

As for the second part of your post...you're correct, at this point in time they aren't legally entitled to the 8 cents. Also, they don't legally have to work. See how that works both ways?

Yeah, I've heard of sets. I've been on a lot of them actually but I digress. Did you not read what I wrote 'AS A GROUP, THE CREW UNIONS GET PAID MORE THAN THE WRITERS' so the 'rich kids' are actually the other ones but I'm gonna go ahead and assume that you mean the 'rich kids' like 'The Office' writers which of course represents the majority of the WGA members.

Seriously, are you not reading anything I wrote? Do you think that those crew members are only used to film and build sets for shows and movies? How do you think reality shows are filmed? Commercials? You think grips and boom operators, for example, are only used when there's a script?

If you're going to try and argue a point, at least use actual knowledge and not your logic because cleary, you lack in that department.

got this email from a coworker

Quote :
"There seems to be little doubt that the writers' strike will result in a shorter TV season, but just how short are we talking? Well, as you might've guessed, it varies from show to show.

Those programs that are either highly efficient (Friday Night Lights) or have entered the season with a backlog of episodes (Men in Trees, Law & Order: SVU) will be in originals well into the new year.

But series with tighter production schedules (i.e., nearly every half-hour comedy) will go dark almost immediately. Of course, figuring out how many episodes remain in your favorite shows' arsenals requires a lot of numbers crunching — and as I've come to learn, the only thing you Ausholes despise more than a Wednesday without AA is mathematics.

With that in mind, I pulled together this incredibly handy (and 85 percent complete) cheat sheet. Keep in mind: The information below is subject to change, particularly if both sides get back to the bargaining table and resolve this frakkin' thing!

30 Rock: Ten episodes will be produced. Five episodes have aired, so there are five left.

Aliens in America: Seventeen episodes will be produced. Seven episodes have aired, so there are 10 left.

Back to You: Nine episodes will be produced. Six episodes have aired, so there are three left.

Bionic Woman: Roughly nine episodes will be produced. Six episodes have aired, so there are three left.

Bones: Twelve episodes will be produced. Seven episodes have aired, so there are five left.

Boston Legal: Fifteen episodes will be produced. Seven episodes have aired, so there are eight left.

Brothers & Sisters: Twelve episodes will be produced. Seven episodes have aired, so there are five left.

Carpoolers: Thirteen episodes will be produced. Five episodes have aired, so there are eight left.

Cavemen: Thirteen episodes will be produced. Five episodes have aired, so there are eight left.

Chuck: Thirteen episodes will be produced. Eight episodes have aired, so there are five left.

CSI: NY: Fourteen episodes will be produced. Eight episodes have aired, so there are six left.

Desperate Housewives: Ten episodes will be produced. Seven episodes have aired, so there are three left.

Dirty Sexy Money: Eleven episodes will be produced. Six episodes have aired, so there are five left.

Friday Night Lights: Fifteen episodes will be produced. Seven episodes have aired, so there are eight left.

Gossip Girl: Thirteen episodes will be produced. Seven episodes have aired, so there are six left.

Grey's Anatomy: Eleven episodes will be produced. Seven episodes have aired, so there are four left.

Heroes: Eleven episodes will be produced. Eight episodes have aired, so there are three left.

House: Twelve episodes will be produced. Seven episodes have aired, so there are five left.

Jericho: Seven episodes will be produced. None have aired yet, so there are seven episodes left.

Law & Order: SVU: Fourteen episodes will be produced. Seven episodes have aired, so there are seven left.

Life is Wild: Twelve episodes will be produced. Six episodes have aired, so there are six left.

Lost: Eight episodes will be produced. None have aired yet, so there are eight episodes left.

Medium: Nine episodes will be produced. None have aired yet, so there are nine episodes left.

Men in Trees: Nineteen episodes will be produced. Six episodes have aired, so there are 13 left.

Numbers: Twelve episodes will be produced. Eight, so there are four left.

One Tree Hill: Twelve episodes will be produced. None have aired yet, so there are twelve episodes left.

The Office: Twelve half-hour episodes will be produced. Eleven half-hour episodes have aired, so there is one half-hour episode left.

Prison Break: Thirteen episodes will be produced. Eight episodes have aired, so there are five left. (On hiatus 'til Jan. 14)

Private Practice: Ten or 11 episodes will be produced. Six episodes have aired, so there are four or five left.

Pushing Daisies: Nine episodes will be produced. Five episodes have aired, so there are four left.

Reaper: Ten to 12 episodes will be produced. Eight episodes have aired, so there are two to four left.

Samantha Who?: Twelve episodes will be produced. Five episodes have aired, so there are seven left.

Scrubs: Eleven episodes will be produced. Three episodes have aired, so there are eight left.

Shark: Eleven episodes will be produced. Seven episodes have aired, so there are four left.

The Shield: All 13 season-seven episodes will be completed. None have aired (the final season gets underway in '08), so there are 13 left.

Smallville: Fifteen episodes will be produced. Seven episodes have aired, so there are eight left.

Supernatural: Ten to 12 episodes will be produced. Six episodes have aired, so there are four to six left.

Ugly Betty: Twelve or 13 episodes will be produced. Seven episodes have aired, so there are five or six left.

The writers get $0.04 for every DVD sold. This hasn't gone up since VHS days. All they want is it bumped to $0.08 per DVD (with the same rates applied to internet downloads which they currently get nothing from). Sounds fair to me.

I hate the MPAA and RIAA. They claim they sue people for the artists, but they are just greedy bastards.

it really only takes one party.

but i must say i do sympathize with the writers on this one. they're just trying to get equal treatment for web content as they do broadcast content. the networks are selling ads for the web content (or selling the content outright via itunes, etc). it seems to me this is not really any different than broadcast and video sales for which writers receive residuals.

i dont know, i think both sides would have to be equally stubborn to keep a strike going for more than a couple of days. the current losses are roughly the same for both parties, possibly even more so for the networks, so both have the same relative motivation to end the strike (or vice versa). once one side's losses outweigh the other, then the latter will concede enough terms to end the strike.
