Veering off course is easier than trying to actually debate the topic at hand, apparently. 11/8/2007 12:26:49 PM |

kind of like veering off into O'Reilly/FoxNews is easier than staying on topic of Rosie/MSNBC] 11/8/2007 12:28:06 PM |

I see the typical howlers have turned out for this one. (1) This situation shows that all of you listed were wrong about Rosie--major news outlets like MSNBC, The New York Times, and so on obviously think she matters. And (2) are you saying that MSNBC is of no import, schmoe? Would you like to revise and extend your remarks?

In terms of objectivity I rank MSNBC just above Fox News, mainly b/c they have an ACTUAL conservative pundit (Carlson) while Fox couldn't find an eloquent, hardcore liberal with two hands and a map...
...
... and no Colmes does not count b/c liberal =/= "Oh I just disagree with whatever Hannity says, but don't take my word for it. I'm just a stupid wine-guzzling, cheese-eating, left-wing moonbat"...
....
... then again, even they did find an eloquent, hardcore liberal they wouldn't let him on the air 11/8/2007 8:50:22 PM |

hooksaw,
I'm not sure that MSNBC and The New York Times reflect popular opinion as much as they dictate popular opinion. The same can be said of the presidential candidates, although the candidates may be somewhat restrained by the media.
Or is it just me?
I'll watch world news and network news on any given day. I'll see a plethora of world news in just one hour. I'll flip through network news and see every program on every news channel reporting the same two or three news stories throughout the day.
And the commentary always consists of the most mundane aspects of any story. I know that these companies are trying to make some a buck, but shouldn't they be providing a service to someone other than their advertisers?
I dunno, maybe I'm just jaded. 11/8/2007 9:00:02 PM |

I used to have this idealistic view of the media. I considered it some type of noble profession with the purpose of keeping those in power in check.
I remember sitting in the Wolve's Den, watching Colin Powell's entire presentation to the U.N. Security Council. Once he was finished, it returned to the newscaster, whom stated, "That was very solid evidence presented by the Secretary of State."
I nearly choked on my Sprite when I heard that. I couldn't believe it. I thought, "Did I miss something that he said?" At that point, I was baffled; I wondered if the anchor had even watched Colin Powell's address.
Also, the media will report popular protests, but it never seems to explain the reasons for the protests. I recall the protests somewhere out west (Seattle or Canada) regarding a summit on globalization. I scoured the media for reasons why people were protesting, with no avail. At the time, I had an idealistic view of globalization, and couldn't understand the reasoning for the protest. I'm sure the info was out there, but I couldn't find it.
I've noticed some commentary on the Daily Show regarding all the major networks hyping up the war in Iraq and Iran. Not just FOX, but CNN and NBC, as well. I don't know if it's all profit-motivated or what. These days, I don't know what to think of the media, other than to take it all in with a grain of salt.

The tv networks are just pure garbage. It's a shame they're "our" air waves and we really don't have too much of a say in what we get. 11/8/2007 10:10:05 PM |
