pabloprice: You do not understand how a scope works. It lights up more than you can see with your own eyes when it is that dark because it gathers every fraction of light it can. I could not see the deer well without the scope, plus, its hard as hell to aim a rifle that is equipped with a scope by not using the scope... do you understand that? Because you can't really look over the scope and expect to hit what you need to. Plus, it was very brushy, and I needed to be able to see every little thing between she and I so I could "thread the needle" so to speak. With a bullet that small, if you hit the smallest of twig, you will not hit what you are aiming for. Plus, I don't like the idea of wounding a deer, so I need to be certain before I fire. Honestly, if it had beedn lighter, I would have used my shot gun.

I was waiting for that! I don't expect to fix the deer population with what little bit of hunting I do, I won't claim to.

I shoot guns a lot.
I have never shot an animal before though, and have only been hunting a few times.
Mostly because I find it boring, and if you ever do get to shoot one, then you've got hours of disgusting work ahead of you. 11/10/2007 9:03:09 PM |

^ It can be nerve racking... honestly. Sometimes it is hard to get still. Like this morning. I asked my Daddy to leave the woods early with me because I could not sit sttill because I was so dang cold! Once you chill to the bone, its miserable. I just planned on it being warmer today, and didn't prepare sufficiently.

if you eat the cat, then don't whine about it. There is a difference between killing for food, and euthanizing a cat because nobody wants it.11/10/2007 9:09:27 PM |

Joe, I do clean my game. Its hard to do much of it on my own though because my Daddy is all about cleaning deer for me. He thinks its his responsibility. I ain't complaining though! But I could do it on my own, I have watched enough. Its not that bad really. We can skin and gun a deer in like 20 mins.

I don't hunt or anything, but there's too many goddamn deer around right now. I've seen more this fall than I've ever seen in my life. 5 or 6 dead on the side of the road every time I've driven to Wilmington. Shitload of them sprinting along the side of 40 between Raleigh and Greensboro the other night. 8-point buck wandering around a parking lot at the corner of Gorman and Tryon the other night. 11/10/2007 10:04:08 PM |

I killed one and each of my buddies killed one. They both killed does, one was a first kill with a bow. The picture was taken at the processor at about 930 so half of darlington counties residents' kills are out there 11/10/2007 10:14:21 PM |

^ Nice buck, never seen one with a broken antler. However, the one I got last year was a 5x1... its kinda weird. I have been working on a European mount with it. This was not my first deer, but was my first doe. Thanks, and congrats to you! Why does the pic say 2005?
Quote : | "did she ever answer this:
Quote : "since when is killing a doe a great accomplishment?" " |
I haven't answered it because I don't understand its relevance... doe, buck - it don't matter, its all meat. I am a meat hunter, not a trophy hunter. I wasn't raised that way.
Quote : | "why not get a bigger gun?" |
No need for overkill, I don't need anything bigger, this rifle is more accurate than most rifles out there, accuracy is more important than size. This rifle will reach out there and kill something 400 yards away just as well as anything else. I love this rifle, and I will be surprised if I ever deer hunt with anything besides this rifle. (Except a shotgun only on a drive though!) And yeah, this too: Quote : | "twigs fuck with all of them" |
Quote : | "Congrats on your deer, now slice the tenderloin, bread it in flour salt and pepper, fry and enjoy." |
Thanks! Also I prefer tenderloin on an indoor grill over fried anyday! I've never had it breaded and fried, but I think I'll definitely have to try that.
dagreenone: get your ass outta bed!! You gotta do a morning hunt the right way. Go to bed way early the night before to keep from being sleepy, once oyu get sleepy in the woods- not only is it hard to fight it, but its hard to sit still.
Apocalypse: This deer is WAY older than 1/2 year, she's already nursed fawns, she weighed about 150 lbs., I looked at her teeth, and as far as I could tell - she's about 3ish. Think before you type! I'm a wildlife major, I think I can age deer by now!
Here's a pic: not very good but all I could get.

The key to good deer burger is beef fat. (Pork for sausage) We heard of a recipe that calls for 2 lbs. of bacon (good quality bacon) for 10 lbs. of deer for burger. We're definitely gonna try that.
^I have a friend who killed one with a mag lite. But it was totally not cool. He had hit it with his truck and had nothing in his truck to finish it off with besides the light.
