i just hope hickson falls in love with the school and the college environment. he could definitely go pro after this year if he wants to. i'm just holding out hope that he says he wants to come back and win a national championship or something. he said in an interview at one point that he wanted to make his grandma proud and graduate from NC State, but i'm not buyin that. not unless he does it over time w/online classes while playing in the NBA. 11/16/2007 12:56:15 AM |

here's what's going to happen:
we're going to do well this season, but not great, and then costner and hickson are both going to leave, and we're going to be mediocre forever after that.

he could easily go pro after this year if he plays like he did tonight throughout the season
he could also easily play for 2 or 3 or 4 years here...i mean i dont know him personally, i dont know his personality, his goals, his values, his outlook on life, who is whispering in his ear, if his family is poor and really really needs financial help, etc...far as i know we can all speculate on what will happen, and if the right/wrong people get in his ear, he could go pro early, assuming he keeps doing his thing...who knows though, lets just enjoy him cause he is a fucking baller
also random note...i recall watching JJ in the mcdonalds all american game (btw from here on out and from now on, "JJ" will refer to "J. J. Hickson" and never again to "J. J. Redick". Please make note of that). Anyway he was solid in that game but didn't dominate; there were lots of other ballers...almost made me wonder about how badly the top McDonalds All Americans would whoop most college bball teams

actually he did dominate in that game. he was one of the top scorers and didn't play that many minutes. 18 minutes or so, if i remember right. and all the write-ups about the practice week consistently had him in the top players at practice. then, he went on to some other all-star game and did well at that one too. if i feel like it i may look some of that shit up and post it. depends on how much help i need procrastinating. 11/16/2007 1:07:54 AM |

Gtown also has much better outside shooting...so they (W&M's defense) would have to concentrate some of their efforts on the perimeter moreso than us. By that logic, you'd think Hibbert would have had a bigger game than JJ.
Then again, that could just mean that Gtown's offensive strategy generated more outside...they do run some offshoot of the Princeton last I watched them.
Without watching their earlier game, it's hard for me to draw a conclusion to how good W&M is..or Gtown for that matter. One thing is for certain...JJ and the rest of our team are gonna keep workin, we're in good hands. 11/16/2007 8:49:01 AM |

it is a nice luxury to have depth to be able to replace a big man if he is having an off night (as McCauley was last night). But you can be certain McCauley will have a couple games this season where he scores 20+.11/16/2007 10:30:43 AM |

Quote : | "why is that crazy. i can about guarantee you hibbert was the focal point of their defense" |
hickson was definitely the focal point of the defense tonight as well. guys were all over him all game. half his points came with 2+ defenders on him.
just read this quote from the coach:
Quote : | ""The difference in the game was a dadgum freshman who's probably going to be a lottery pick (in the NBA draft)," William & Mary coach Tony Shaver said. "We fronted him. We played behind him. We double- and triple-teamed him. Nothing worked."" |
JJ was ridiculous, and he will continue to be a major weapon for us. and say what you want about fergie playing, but i think he may prove to be an important player for us this year. he always hustled on defense when he got minutes last year, and now that it looks like his outside shot is starting to fall we're going to need him to help counter the zone. teams are going to key on the paint and try to stop hickson/others from getting the easy buckets.
we need at least one or two guys to be hot from behind the arc each game to keep the inside game alive. based on the three games played so far and reports from practice it appears that ferguson could join costner, horner, and fells as one of our potential hot shooters some games. add to this his intensity and hustle on the defensive end of the ball and it's hard to see why you wouldn't want a guy like this giving you minutes while your starters get a breather.
i'll be one of the first to admit that trevor looked very disappointing last season and even looked lost out there at times. he was hesitant to pull the trigger when he had open shots and lacked confidence in all facets of his game. i think we need to remember that last year was really his first time playing against division-i competition, after spending a year before that on the bench. sure, he was able to practice with the team, but it's hard to develop your game without getting that experience in a real game environment.
before his year on the bench for us, ferguson left pittsburgh before the season even started (he committed there without even taking a visit because they were the only major school that kept their offer on the table after he broke both wrists in 2003.) he went to a prep school and played a few weeks (averaged 24 points, 8 rebounds, 7 assists) before transferring here in december and that was the only competition he had since high school prior to getting in the mix last year.
i have no expectations of ferguson becoming an All-ACC superstar, but I do think he can be a valuable player for us over the next 3 years. the guy's been through a ton and he plays with a lot of heart. i don't know why anyone wouldn't root for a guy like that.11/16/2007 10:53:57 AM |

not a bad debut for hickson i suppose
he could very well be a first round pick but we will def. need some outside shooting in the ACC schedule, consistent 3-point shooting. otherwise, other teams with comparable size and athletes will be able to successfully double team him and will force us to make shots from the outside.
Either way, what a great performance for a first game and it looks to be an exciting season 11/16/2007 12:11:36 PM |

I don't think any redneck attire people wear to the games is going to have 0.00001% impact on the number of years he stays at State...get real
yeah just cheer for him and let him know you appreciate him...if people are in his ear telling him about his multi millions he can make in the NBA, not wearing redneck shit isnt gonna have any bearing whatsoever on his decision

^ agreed. Hickson is here for Sidney. He also claims to want to take "the program back to where we used to be". He's here to play basketball under an NBA minded coach.
The deciding factor in him leaving early will be how high he will be drafted compared to others in his class. How much hype will this team get? Will he be the focus player of that hype?
I know one thing: He will be drafted above Hansbro because he has STRONGER FUCKIN WILL! (and as Gavin puts it, "He's a beast")

+1
I've been saying fergie just needs time to get his confidence on the court since last year. This year he really looks more comfortable and had some nice passes last night. He was only 1-3, but he will start getting hot. LAst year he shot .400 from 3 pt range. This year if he can keep that same percentage w/ the quicker release he has developed, then we could see him getting a lot of points and also help open the inside up more.
Last night we shot .208 from 3 pt.(5-24) To be effective we really need to make those shots. Horner, Ferguson, Costner and Fells need to be consistent at making those shots when they get their # called. It was frustrating watching Lowe calling the plays for different shooters since nobody was on and rarely having it go in.
To the frat guys that sat next to me and kept yelling Fuck Fergie, you guys are fucking idiots. You comment on how you hate him when he comes in the game, he sinks a 3, and then you scream at the top of your lungs Fuck Fergie, WTF? He just scored and helped the team.
Anybody else notice we only had 1 TO from the PG position? If they can keep doing that all year, we should be a solid club. Granted it was W&M, but at least it is something to be hopeful about.11/16/2007 3:16:07 PM |
