"6 charged over 'honour killing'
24/08/2007 19:24 - (SA)

Amman - A Jordanian prosecutor has charged six men with murder over the "honour" killing of a female relative suspected of having a premarital affair with her husband, a local newspaper reported on Friday.

The 22-year-old woman was allegedly shot dead just two weeks after her wedding by her uncle, who claimed he was "cleansing the family honour", according to the English-language Jordan Times.

She was the ninth woman reportedly murdered in a so-called honour crime since the beginning of the year, it said.

The 38-year-old uncle was charged with premeditated murder and five others, including the woman's father, were charged with complicity, the paper said, quoting an unnamed official source.

The victim had filed a complaint against the suspects after they threatened to kill her, but she later dropped the charges on her father request, the official said.

"Before entering the mayor's office to drop the charges, her father lured her to a side road ... one of her uncles drew a gun and shot her repeatedly until he made sure she was dead," according to the source. "

These are my favorite. A 22 year old girl gets married, then lured to a side street two weeks later and murdered.

"Honour killing: Woman raped
19/07/2007 18:47 - (SA)

London - A Kurdish woman was brutally raped, stamped on and strangled by members of her family and their friends in an "honour killing" carried out at her London home because she had fallen in love with the wrong man.

Banaz Mahmod, 20, was subjected to the 2½-hour ordeal before she was garrotted with a bootlace.

Her body was stuffed into a suitcase and taken to Birmingham where it was buried in the back garden of a house.

Her badly decomposed body was found in April 2006, three months after the killing.

Last month a jury found her father Mahmod Mahmod, 52, and his brother Ari Mahmod, 51, guilty of murder after a three-month trial. Their associate Mohamad Hama, 30, had earlier admitted killing her.

'Brought shame on the family'

On Thursday at a pre-sentence hearing for Hama, the Old Bailey heard details about Banaz's last moments.

Prosecutors said the three convicted men, along with two other suspects who are still at large, had carried out the killing fearing that the authorities were closing in on them.

They believed Banaz had brought shame on the family by leaving her husband, an Iraqi Kurd she had been forced to marry at 17, and falling in love with Rahmat Suleimani, an Iranian Kurd.

Her former unnamed partner had raped her as well as repeatedly beating her, the court heard.

'I saw her stark naked'

Hama, who prosecutors said had been a ringleader in the murder, was caught by listening devices talking to a friend in prison about the murder.

In the recordings, transcripts of which were relayed to the court, Hama and his friend are hearing laughing as he described how she was killed with Banaz's uncle quot;supervising".

"I was kicking and stamping on her neck to get the soul out. I saw her stark naked, only wearing pants or underwear," Hama is recorded as saying.

His lawyers say there is no evidence to support the prosecution's claims.

The decision to kill her came after a meeting on January 23 - the day before she was murdered - when the family decided to take action before the police could foil their attempts, said prosecutor Victor Temple.

Hama is due to be sentenced on Friday with Mahmod Mahmod and his brother, Ari. "

i agree its a stupid rule.

but stuff doesnt fly in some places.

when the rules say you cant be with men that you are not either married to or family, then you cant be with them. no Q asked. yeah it sucks she got raped and all. but its one of those things.

if you are drunk and driving. and someone hits you. you are still getting in trouble. you "didnt do anything wrong"...

its pretty much the same way.

might not seem fair"

being a woman is not the same as being drunk
she got gang raped

so, this boils down to two points

1. You guys either a) lack moral fiber or b) lack a sense of liberty and a strong personal identity
2. Fuck Saudi Arabia.

Snewf let me be serious for a moment and ask you a serious question. I think we all agree that the punishment is unbelievably absurd. Clearly nobody is asking to get raped (cept maybe some fags but thats another story). There are some fucked up backwoods ass laws in Saudi Arabia. But my question is what do you think should be done? Who do you blame for this? The governing body of Saudi Arabia because they ultimately make the laws? Who?

If we truly want to take the moral high road a good start would be to stop trading with Saudi Arabia and to work to get their investing out of our economy - yes, that would be painful

plenty of work needs to be done at home to create an environment where rape cannot thrive

I am against unprovoked foreign military action and think that our strongest weapon abroad should be economic... boycotts and trade embargoes, maybe coupled with covert aid to insurgents (but make sure they aren't going to be worse than the previous theocracy)

I feel that we should be pragmatic with our foreign policy

the embargoes with Cuba have been ongoing and have not succeeded in dissolving the dictatorship
perhaps another tactic is in order... considering Cuba's special relationship with the United States in the form of a large diaspora community, particularly in a city that is geographically close to Cuba, I think that a more open policy might serve to mobilize the social change necessary to eliminate Castro's dictatorship. Or, we wait until he dies and drop the embargo; encourage them to develop a free market and begin open trade with us.

thats exactly what i'm getting at...I doubt any type of embargo with S.A. would change their monarchical power structure...they've got plenty of other countries willing to buy their oil

probably, but the embargo is a symbolic move as well

OK, so no one's mentioned this, I think this is a pretty important point: Given that the attackers were ARMED (and there were six of them in the first place), doesn't it stand to reason she was FORCED into the car?

it's really easy to judge a culture based on skimming over a 1-page article.

how about instead of trying to police the world, we work on reducing our own crime rate? our murder rate is still pretty high, compared to parts of europe and asia.

Quote :
"...Japan experienced 1.3 robberies per 100,000 population, compared with 48.6 for West Germany, 65.8 for Great Britain, and 233.0 for the United States; and it experienced 1.1 murder per 100,000 population, compared with 3.9 for West Germany, 1.03 for England and Wales, and 8.7 for the United States that same year. Japanese authorities also solve a high percentage of robbery cases (75.9 percent, compared with 43.8 percent for West Germany, 26.5 percent for Britain, and 26.0 percent for the United States) and homicide cases (95.9 percent, compared with 94.4 percent for Germany, 78.0 percent for Britain, and 68.3 percent for the United States). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crime_in_Japan"

you are an idiot I am sure several countries could say the same thing irritated at our torture or other shady shit America has been involved in; even domestically the police brutality concerning tasers. Why do we have to be the world's voice to tell countries how to run or enforce their laws. We should express disappointment at this failed justice in Saudi Arabia but this is not an issue worth damaging diplomatic relations over. The justice system fails people all the time in various countries throughout the world; even in the US. Saudi citizens should be the ones expressing their outrage, encouraging the gov't for proper justice. Regardless it is their legal system. Many countries probably shake their heads over the fact that we still allow capital punishment.

Regardless of whether its "fundamentally" right or wrong it is their country. Speaking of trade embargos do any of you think its a coincidence that oil prices are high with OPEC cutting exports of oil to the US in the midst of our saber rattling at Iran and the disastrous Iraq war.

Quote :
"WE'VE GOT IT SO BAD IN THE UNITED STATES YALL...FUCK BUSH"

yeah here we just get shot a dozen times for holding a hair brush; or get a taser to the chest if I do not respond to police commands quick enough.

I predict by the time we are old oil demand will have dropped to nothing and the US will be in a better position to dictate terms to those countries.

when oil demand dries up, so will they. it will probably take a good while for them to run out of money, but without oil income, they have no source of cash. Dubai seems to be positioning themselves to make money after the oil demand goes away. Cases like this make America's flaws seem less serious.

Along those lines:

"A British primary school teacher arrested in Sudan faces up to 40 lashes for blasphemy after letting her class of 7-year-olds name a teddy bear Muhammad.

Gillian Gibbons, 54, from Liverpool, was arrested at at Khartoum's Unity High School yesterday, and accused of insulting the Prophet of Islam.
